Global strategic engagement
Global Strategic Engagement analyzes the changes brought about in global politics by the phenomenon of globalization in the last thirty years. The primary point of view of the text is the micro-perspective of the new practitioners of global governance: international public officers, transnational activists, global entrepreneurs, and world leaders. The novelty of the book derives from its two outputs: a micro description of the new way of playing the political game in the age of globalization, and a constructivist mapping of the current political terrain which is centered on the identification of the new references of contemporary politics beyond the traditional cleavage left vs. right.
Global democracy : normative and empirical perspectives
\"Democracy is increasingly seen as the only legitimate form of government, but few people would regard international relations as governed according to democratic principles. Can this lack of global democracy be justified? Which models of global politics should contemporary democrats endorse and which should they reject? What are the most promising pathways to global democratic change? To what extent does the extension of democracy from the national to the international level require a radical rethinking of what democratic institutions should be? This book answers these questions by providing a sustained dialogue between scholars of political theory, international law, and empirical social science. By presenting a broad range of views by prominent scholars, it offers an in-depth analysis of one of the key challenges of our century: globalizing democracy and democratizing globalization\"-- Provided by publisher.

Advocacy strategies for human rights: the campaign for the moratorium on the death penalty
This article examines the different strategies used by transnational actors in advocacy against the death penalty. In particular, it studies the strategies adopted by the transnational campaign for the moratorium on capital punishment in view of the United Nations General Assembly vote of 2007 and subsequent years (2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014). The article shows that a variety of different strategies are used in the organizational, institutional, and communicative domains. Within the broader debate on norm diffusion, this article sheds light on the under-investigated area of specific tactics, which include horizontal networking, multilayered political lobbying, reason-based framing, and emotion-based story-telling, deployed by transnational activists to induce key actors to change their policy preference.
Mapping Alternative Models of Global Politics
This paper investigates the principal competing visions of global politics that are currently advanced in the public discourse about globalization in opposition to the traditional state-centered perspective. The first part of the paper develops an analysis of ideal models as cultural resources that grounds the different reading of human bonds. The second part applies the notion of ideal models to the new scenario of globalization, and identifies four alternative interpretations of the notion of global politics: namely Neo-liberalism, Cosmopolitanism, Alter-globalism, and Dialogue among Civilizations. The principal characteristics of these four notions are presented in order to map the current debate on the future of global politics.
A matter of drawing boundaries: global democracy and international exclusion
This article defends the case for a global extension of democracy by deploying a cosmo-federalist theory. As a response to the current state of international exclusion, the radical project of stretching the paradigm of democratic inclusion to the extreme limits encompassing the whole of mankind, is here presented. The article begins by taking position for a choice-based version of consequentialism that generates a principle of political justice centred on political participation. From this, a political project is developed that envisages a cosmopolitan system where all world citizens are included within a scheme of a direct representative participation under an overarching authority governing the process of democratising world affairs. Crucial in this is the establishment of an all-inclusive authority to legitimately delineate jurisdictional boundaries and a multilayered system of political interaction.
The current historical period, in which strong ideologies have given way to religious radicalism and its political instrumentalization, calls for a reflection on the role played by faith in international relations. Within these complex international dynamics, Italy has played a significant role. Through the campaign for freedom of religion and belief, Italian foreign policy has made this matter a priority in bilateral and multilateral relations, not only within the EU, but also worldwide. The period of greatest activism occurred in the years 2004-2013, but it was preceded by a long phase of political attention and followed by a continuous but less marked commitment. The mobilization aimed to include the issue of religious freedom in talks with other countries, trying to create a normative system aimed at protecting religious minorities and, at the same time, to foster social sensitivity for tolerance and respect for all forms of religion and worship. On a practical level, this meant promoting the right to religious freedom both at European and international level through legally binding policies. The synergy created between governmental actors and the Italian civil society contributed greatly to the success of the campaign. However, unlike other campaigns, in this case the participation of the Church, and the Catholic activism connected to it, have proved to be by far predominant. While it is obvious that the very nature of the matter called for this type of relationship, it is also true that the occasion has given a way of confirming how attentive the Catholic world is to the choices of Italian politics and how much it influences its actions. This article is based on a research carried out between 2015 and 2016 through the study of primary and secondary bibliography, as well as semi-structured interviews conducted with the main actors involved in the campaign, including both governmental actors (Ministers of Foreign Affairs, MAECI officials), non-governmental actors (Community of Sant'Egidio, Comunione e Liberazione) and experts.
