We are the future: CANCELLING EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
2002
I'm from Clover Bar Junior High and I'm upset with the strike the teachers conducted. The classes are over-populated and some textbooks are unreadable because pages are missing.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: TANTOWELS, Made in the shade?
[Erika Santucci] says: Forget about instant gratification! The directions claim three hours and you are golden? Approaching day four, I wasn't a shade darker. TanTowel does rack up some brownie points for the application process, which is quick and simple: Massage one TanTowel wipe all over body or face, dispose with no greasy mess. A quick trick to achieve faster sun goddess status: Re-apply new packet wipes three or four times over a 24- to 48-hour period. Even still, results are gradual and too inconsistent with each towel usage to obtain that beach-baked look.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: QUO, Fashionable fun-seekers
2004
[Jeralyn Gerba] says: The existing state of Quo is probably unfairly surmised, given that midsummer crowds here in the city bear no resemblance to the rest of the year. Nevertheless, the newish nightspot in Chelsea managed to entice loads of dressed-up frat boys and ex-cheerleaders on a recent weekend. Sharing the crowd with the rest of the megaclubs on the block (Crobar, Spirit and Marquee) gives it a dull clubbing feel, though the music is excellent, and the vibe's not as desperate. Go before the weekend hits - the status is much more vibrant and lively. IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'THE BOURNE SUPREMACY', Damon's 'Bourne' to thrill
2004
1) AP Photo - [Matt Damon] and Julia Stiles in the espionage thriller \"The Bourne Supremacy\" Photos - 2) [Megan McAlpine], 3) [Joanne Kloc], 4) [Kevin Sheldon], 5) [Dana Linton]. 6) Group Atomic Fury Megan says: If you saw \"Bourne Identity,\" be sure to go out and see \"Bourne Supremacy.\" It's an action-packed, explosive film right from the beginning and keeps you on the edge of your seat with twists unfolding till the end. At times, the chase scenes get long, and the cinematography is so fast- moving, you can't make out what is going on. Action isn't my top choice in movies, but I would definitely see \"Bourne

IMPULSE, YOUR REVIEWS: COCA-COLA'S C2, It's just halfway all right
Pouring it from the can to the cup, it looks just like regular Coca-Cola. Drinking it, it tastes like regular Coca-Cola with a little less fizz. I like my soda with a lot of sparkle, but if I did a blind taste test, I don't think I would be able to tell the difference between Coca-Cola and C2. C2 is worth the investment for anyone caught up in the carb-counting craze. I'm not a big fan of the low-carb craze to begin with, so the idea of drinking low-carb soda is a little much. C2 is a cross between Coca-Cola and Diet Coke with an added aftertaste that lasts well after you drink it. I don't think I will be making the switch from Diet Coke anytime soon! If you are a regular drinker of Coca- Cola and are watching your carbs, you may want to check it out yourself, but I wouldn't recommend it.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: PLAY, Indulge your playful side
2004
[Linda Harel] says: Having board games on the menu is a brilliant idea, and I wish lounges everywhere would catch on, but if you don't live in Long Island City, don't go out of your way to Play. It's nice to be able to bowl on black-lit lanes, play checkers (if you don't mind that a third of the pieces are missing) and watch \"America's Funniest Home Videos\" (with Lenny Kravitz music replacing the sound) all at once, but people kept to their own pool tables, rather than forming massive games of Twister. I'd have had more fun buying Candyland and taking it to the park.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: BOARDY BARN, LI's own 'Animal House'
2004
1) Photo-Boardy Barn. 2) [Krista West], 22, Melville. 3) [Megan McAlpine], 25, Hicksville. 4) [Chealynn Feaster], 23, Stony Brook. 5) [Rob DiMartino], 25, Port Jefferson Station. 6) [Joseph Scuderi], 24, Lindenhurst The extremely long line to get in is well worth the wait! How would I describe the Boardy Barn? A crazy mess and I mean that in a good way. The beer is $1 a cup and goes down very easy, so most people have \"had enough\" within an hour of being there. Be sure to wear old clothes and shoes, since you will be dancing through puddles of beer to some great old-school music. And definitely take the train or a taxi!

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: SOCIAL, Three floors of socializing
2004
This three-level Hell's Kitchen nightspot is part pub, part lounge and part neighborhood hangout. Social's main floor houses a cozy bar and dining area. Upstairs, there's an \"Irish room\" on one side and a low-key lounge and bar on the other. The third level, Fusion, features a VIP lounge and an outdoor patio. Social suffers from an identity crisis. Part midtown, after- work, pick-up spot; part top-40 dance club and part Irish pub, it doesn't get anything right. The nonexistent decor and bland clientele, coupled with the pricey, plastic-cup drinks and occasional cover charge will leave a bad taste in your mouth, a dent in your wallet and some inebriated suit's drink spilled down the front of your shirt. IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: PETE'S CANDY STORE, In the 'Burg, it's so sweet
2004
[Jesse Giles] says: Pete's Candy Store is sweet!! The space in Pete's is tight, but the bar has a lot of flavor. There's an outdoor space that has heat lamps to keep you warm during the cooler months. They've got great beers on tap, some signature drinks, live music, games - what more could you ask for? ... Oh, it could be a little closer to home. And if you don't like tight spaces and lots of people, this might not be the place for you. Besides the interesting decorative features and its lineup of wacky special events, the best part about Pete's is that there is never a cover charge and the drinks are some of the most generously portioned I've seen. For a change, I felt like I was actually getting a good deal and not being ripped off. Throw in the interesting mix of locals, and you've got one sweet place to visit next time you're in the 'Burg.

IMPULSE
2004
Fresh off its 150th anniversary, [McSORLEY]'s remains a classic no- frills place to kick back with a drink (light or dark ale are the only choices) and mingle with friends and strangers. The East Village institution, one of the oldest bars in the city, is steeped in tradition - women were barred until 1970. Despite such a longstanding snub, a bar with this kind of staying power must be doing something right We sent the Review Crew to check it out. McSorley's decor consists of old photographs and newspaper clippings, plus a chandelier that hasn't been cleaned since they opened. You can't forget about the sawdust on the floor! The crowd ranged in age from early 20s to late 80s, and McSorley's own light and dark ale is enjoyable and cheap at $2.50 for a 7-ounce glass. 1) PHOTO BY CHRISTIE M.
