Oxidative stress and polycystic ovary syndrome: A brief review

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal disorders, occurring in 5-10% women in reproductive ages. Despite a long history of studies on PCOS, its etiology is still unknown. Oxidative stress is now recognized to play a central role in the pathophysiology of many different disorders, including PCOS. Although intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and propagation are controlled by highly complex antioxidant enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems, understanding of mechanisms that oxidative stress is important to develop strategies for prevention and therapy of PCOS. This article reviews the literature data related to the mechanisms of oxidative stress in PCOS.

Role of Obesity in the Tumorigenesis of Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer as a common cancer is a multi-factorial disease that is dependent on parallel effects of environment and genetics. Endogenous and host factors, including gender and several genetic backgrounds are known risk factors also many environmental factors, including smoking, diet, infection and increasing body weight and body mass index (BMI) are associated with the gastric cancer. Epidemiological data have consistently demonstrated a positive relation between obesity and gastric cancer, whereas mechanistic studies have sought to uncover obesity related carcinogenic pathways. Biological mechanisms and the relationship between obesity and cancer are complex and not well understood. Different effective factors include obesity-related hormones and adipokines, growth factors, modulation of energy balance and calorie restriction, inflammatory processes and multiple signaling pathways that affect cancer cell promotion and progression. In this review, we will discuss the recent advances in the understanding of the association of obesity changes in the gastric cancer.

In this study, an efficient method for the synthesis of benzoxazoles by coupling catechols, aldehydes and ammonium acetate using ZrCl
4
as catalyst in ethanol is reported. A wide range of benzoxazoles (59 examples) are smoothly produced in high yields (up to 97%). Other advantages of the method include large-scale synthesis and the use of oxygen as an oxidant. The mild reaction conditions allowed late-stage functionalization, facilitating access to several derivatives with biologically relevant structures such as

The impact of intraoperative non-technical skills training on scrub practitioners’ self-efficacy: a randomized controlled trial

Background
Approximately half of all adverse events occur in the operating room, highlighting the critical role of non-technical skills in operating rooms. Effective non-technical skills among operating room nurses can significantly reduce the occurrence of such events. Moreover, self-efficacy in non-technical skills may directly impact professional performance and patient safety. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of intraoperative non-technical skills training on scrub practitioners' self-efficacy.
Methods
In a randomized controlled trial, 30 scrub practitioners were assigned to the intervention group and 30 to the control group through random allocation. The intervention group underwent training in non-technical skills using a combined technique of lectures and simulated video scenarios delivered in two two-hour training sessions. Meanwhile, the control group received no training. The data collection tool was a two-part questionnaire. The first part collected demographic data (age, gender, work experience, and educational level), while the second part assessed scrub practitioners' self-efficacy in intraoperative non-technical skills. The questionnaire was administered online in two phases, with a one-month interval between them, through the Telegram application to the participants in both groups. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and paired t-tests.
Results
The demographic variables of the intervention group did not show significant differences compared to the control group. The independent t-test revealed no significant difference in overall self-efficacy between the intervention and control groups before the training (

= 0.513). However, after the training, a statistically significant difference was observed (
P
= 0.025). There were no significant differences among the self-efficacy components between the intervention and control groups before the training (
P
> 0.05). However, after the training, self-efficacy in the two skills of situation awareness and communication and teamwork showed statistically significant differences (
P
< 0.05).
Conclusion
Non-technical skills are crucial for scrub practitioners to perform their tasks safely and efficiently. Training can enhance the self-efficacy of scrub practitioners in their non-technical skills. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate non-technical skills training into the educational curriculum and continuing education programs for scrub practitioners.

Examining workload variations among different surgical team roles, specialties, and techniques: a multicenter cross-sectional descriptive study

Background
A high workload may negatively impact the surgical team's performance and jeopardize patient safety. The aim of this study was to measure the workload of the surgical team across different surgical roles, specialties, and techniques in several hospitals.
Methods
This cross-sectional multicenter study was performed in the operating rooms of eight teaching hospitals affiliated with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Iran. At the conclusion of each surgical procedure, all members of the surgical team completed the Surgery Task Load Index (SURG-TLX) questionnaire to assess workload levels. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlations, were performed to compare surgical roles, specialties, techniques, and surgical time on workload overall and by subscale.
Results
A total of 409 workload questionnaires were obtained from 76 surgical teams or cases, involving 346 surgical team members. The total workload among all participants was 32.41 ± 17.21. Surgical complexity, physical demands, and mental demands were the highest workload subscales and distraction was the lowest workload subscale. Cardiovascular specialty had a higher workload compared to other specialties. Open techniques resulted in a higher workload compared to minimally invasive techniques. Surgical technologists who act in both the role of circulating and scrub nurse (C&Ss) experienced the highest workload, followed by surgical residents and surgeons.
Conclusions
The results of the study showed that the workload for some members of the surgical team is disproportionately high and is influenced by factors such as specialty, technique, role, and surgical duration. By knowing the distribution of workload among the members of the surgical team, efforts can be made to optimize the team members’ workload.

A Brief Review on The Molecular Basis of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma

Approximately 5-10% of all thyroid cancers are medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTC). MTC is mainly sporadic in nature, but 20-30% of cases are hereditary. Genetic testing for hereditary MTC is very important for the patient and his family, but the patients must be receiving appropriate genetic counseling. About 98% of patients with hereditary MTC have germline mutations in exons 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 and intron 16 of the REarrangement during transfection (RET) proto-oncogene, but the etiology of the more frequent sporadic form of MTC (sMTC) is not well understood. Recently, it has been reported that apparently sporadic MTC may involve point mutations in BRAF and RAS genes, with an overall prevalence of almost 10%. Also alteration and abnormal expression of miRNA has been described in MTC. In this review, we attempted to mention some mutations and molecular changes in sporadic and hereditary MTC pathogenesis.

Room temperature gas sensing behavior of arrayed one-dimensional (1D) nickel nanowires (Ni NWs) are investigated using impedance spectroscopy. Ni nanowires synthesized via electrochemical deposition method based on anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Their structural characterization verified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. Impedance spectroscopy as an essential technique utilized to understand the mechanism of gas interaction with the wires through the changes in their electronic behavior. Bode and Nyquist plots with the real and imaginary impedances are plotted versus frequency range of 500 Hz to 2 MHz at different relative humidity values (varying from 30% to 70%) and ethanol vapor concentrations (varying from 2 to 18 ppm). The equivalent circuits are proposed and simulated for impedance responses to both humidity and ethanol vapors. The impedance plots indicate the increase in resistance of the aligned nanowires at low frequencies by the adsorption of water and ethanol molecules.

Recently suggested that adipocytokines may play a role in pathogenesis and progression of certain cancers, especially in gastric cancer. The previous study showed Resistin and Visfatin, as adipocyte derived hormones, separately increases telomerase (hTERT) gene, the aim of this study is investigating synergic effects of Resistin and Visfatin on telomerase gene expression, in AGS gastric cancer cell line. In this study, human gastric cancer AGS cell line was selected. After stimulation with increasing concentrations of Resistin and Visfatin recombinant proteins for 24 and 48 hours, cell proliferation was assessed by XTT assay. In order to investigate the telomerase gene expression affected by these proteins, total RNA was extracted, cDNA was synthesized, and expression of hTERT mRNA was carried out by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. After Resistin and Visfatin, recombinant proteins treatment was increased the gastric cell line proliferation and expression of Human Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (hTERT), but co-stimulation with Resistin and Visfatin showed greater inducible effects on cell proliferation and telomerase gene expression in comparison with the stimulatory effect of the individual hormone. This study has shown Resistin, and Visfatin synergistically increased gastric cancer cell proliferation and enhanced the telomerase gene expression. These data showed that these two hormones in gastric cancer tissue could cooperatively accelerate cancer cell growth via enhancing the telomerase expression as a cancer gene.

Iodine deficiency status in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region: a systematic review

Iodine deficiency is a global public health issue because iodine plays a major role in the thyroid hormone synthesis and is essential for normal neurological development. This review summarizes the publications on iodine status in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) countries. All related studies available in main national and international databases were systematically searched using some specific keywords to find article published between 1909 and 2015. The prevention of iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) in the WHO EMR countries is currently under control without significant side effects. Mild to severe IDDs exist in some countries of the Middle East, due to lack of effective iodine supplementation program, but the Islamic Republic of Iran, Jordan, Bahrain and Tunisia have achieved the goal of universal salt iodization. Overall, despite enormous efforts to control IDDs, still IDD remains a serious public health problem in some countries of the region, requiring urgent control and prevention measures.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Probiotic Supplementation in Combination With Doxycycline for the Treatment of Moderate Acne: A Randomized Double‐Blind Controlled Clinical Trial

ABSTRACT
Background
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that negatively affects patients' quality of life. Increasing antibiotic resistance is making acne less responsive to treatment. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits by fighting pathogens and maintaining intestinal homeostasis and skin microbiome balance. This study investigates the effects of probiotics in the treatment of acne vulgaris.
Methods
In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 80 patients with moderate acne were divided into two groups of 40. All patients received the same topical treatment, which consisted of a daily antibacterial face wash and Adapalene gel every other night. The control group received one capsule of doxycycline (100 mg) daily, whereas the intervention group received one probiotic capsule daily in addition to doxycycline. Patients underwent photography of facial acne lesions, and treatment response was assessed using the global acne grading system (GAGS) and acne grading method at baseline, as well as during follow‐up visits at 1, 2, and 3 months.
Results
The global acne grading system indicated that both groups showed improvement. However, analyses revealed that outcomes were significantly better in the doxycycline plus probiotics group for the forehead (p = 0.018), chin (p = 0.021), and nose (p = 0.021). No significant differences were observed for the left and right cheeks, back, and chest areas, with the mean GAGS score reduction between the two groups differing by only 2%. Treatment with probiotics significantly reduced the severity of lesions compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The acne grading method also indicated that the intervention group had a significantly better treatment response than the control group (p < 0.001). Furthermore, treatment with probiotics did not result in any side effects.
Conclusion
Probiotics can serve as an effective and safe treatment option, enhancing the outcomes of routine acne treatments, particularly for patients with acne on the forehead, chin, and nose.
