From the (past) chair
Several events organized by the section at ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta were particularly wellattended: its program on the evaluation of historical sources on Web, the section dinner, and the joint meeting of the Genealogy Committee and the Genealogy and Local History Discussion Group. As a visitor to the joint meetings, during his year as section chair Niessen wants to emphasize the impressive work it has done under the leadership of an outgoing committee chair, the continuing discussion group chair Tom Kemp. The joint meeting again gave time to informative presentations, business, and reports from the field. Vladimir Wertsman spoke about his contributions to work on ethnic reference materials, and Tom Kemp presented an analysis of the newly released microfilm of the 1930 U.S. federal census. The committee received reports on its genealogy preconference and a proposed guideline for continuing education workshops. Finally, colleagues from around the country reported on new acquisitions, outreach activities, digital projects, and other news. The incoming committee chair is Bill Buckner.

A Visit to Kazan: Libraries in Russia's Middle East
The largest remnant of the former Soviet Union, the Russian Federation, is overwhelmingly Russian in population. It have enclaves of ethnic minorities, Tatarstan being one of the largest. The capital of Tatarstan, Kazan, is situated midway between Moscow and the Urals on Europe's longest river, the Volga. This article describes the author's visit to Kazan on October 4-12, 2007 as part of an exchange program between Rutgers University and Kazan State University. Kazan State University is the second oldest university in Russia, but its library is even older. The library is participating in a project to create a Russian union catalog.
