Hard X-ray free-electron laser with femtosecond-scale timing jitter
The hard X-ray free-electron laser at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL-XFEL) in the Republic of Korea achieved saturation of a 0.144 nm free-electron laser beam on 27 November 2016, making it the third hard X-ray free-electron laser in the world, following the demonstrations of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free Electron Laser (SACLA). The use of electron-beam-based alignment incorporating undulator radiation spectrum analysis has allowed reliable operation of PAL-XFEL with unprecedented temporal stability and dispersion-free orbits. In particular, a timing jitter of just 20 fs for the free-electron laser photon beam is consistently achieved due to the use of a state-of-the-art design of the electron linear accelerator and electron-beam-based alignment. The low timing jitter of the electron beam makes it possible to observe Bi(111) phonon dynamics without the need for timing-jitter correction, indicating that PAL-XFEL will be an extremely useful tool for hard X-ray time-resolved experiments. The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) in South Korea has now entered operation with a timing jitter of just 20 fs.
A graph-based representation of game scenarios; methodology for minimizing anomalies in computer game
When we design the computer games, new concepts are hard to communicate because the development of the new computer games is far less formalized compared with other software. However, the creative processing additionally has the benefit if the new concepts of the computer games are widely used and discussed. We focus on understanding the ideas to be shared between the game designer and the game programmer in the game design. The research defines a graph-based representation of game scenarios is in terms of Event graph, State graph, and Action graph forms in order to minimize anomalies of game flow design. This method in our research can reduce unexpected and undesirable game situations. Also it reduces the mismatched information between the game designer and the game programmer in game-playing. Compared with the existing method such as storyboard, flowchart, and SSM, we demonstrate the viability of our game design methodology.
Construction and Commissioning of PAL-XFEL Facility
The construction of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL), a 0.1-nm hard X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) facility based on a 10-GeV S-band linear accelerator (LINAC), is achieved in Pohang, Korea by the end of 2016. The construction of the 1.11 km-long building was completed by the end of 2014, and the installation of the 10-GeV LINAC and undulators started in January 2015. The installation of the 10-GeV LINAC, together with the undulators and beamlines, was completed by the end of 2015. The commissioning began in April 2016, and the first lasing of the hard X-ray FEL line was achieved on 14 June 2016. The progress of the PAL-XFEL construction and its commission are reported here.
Selective addition of CXCR3+CCR4-CD4+ Th1 cells enhances generation of cytotoxic T cells by dendritic cells in vitro
Increasing importance is being given to the stimulation of Th1 response in cancer immunotherapy because its presence can shift the direction of adaptive immune responses toward protective immunity. Based on chemokine receptor expression, CXCR3 + CCR4 - CD4 + T cells as Th1-type cells were investigated its capacity in monocyte-derived dendritic cell (DC) maturation and polarization, and induction of antigen specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in vitro . The levels of IL-4, IL-5 and IL-10 were decreased to the basal level compared with high production of IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-2 in CXCR3 + CCR4 - CD4 + T cells stimulated with anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 antibodies. Co-incubation of activated CD4 + or CXCR3 + CCR4 - CD4 + T cells with DC (CD4 + /DC or CXCR3 + CD4 + /DC, respectively) particularly up-regulated IL-12 and CD80 expression compared with DC matured with TNF-α and LPS (mDC). Although there was no significant difference between the effects of the CXCR3 + CCR4 - CD4 + and CD4 + T cells on DC phenotype expression, CXCR3 + CD4 + /DC in CTL culture were able to expand number of CD8 + T cells and increased frequencies of IFN-γ secreting cells and overall cytolytic activity against tumor antigen WT-1. These results demonstrated that the selective addition of CXCR3 + CCR4 - CD4 + T cells to CTL cultures could enhance the induction of CTLs by DC in vitro , and implicated on a novel strategy for adoptive T cell therapy.
Sesame cake extract attenuates dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis through inhibition of oxidative stress in mice
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease occurring in the gut causing chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain with severe complications. Sesame cake is a by-product of sesame oil production, possessing various beneficial properties; however, little is known about the effect of sesame cake extract (SCE) against IBD. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of SCE against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Administration of SCE was first performed at 7 days before treating mice with 2.5% DSS to induce colitis for 7 days. SCE pretreatment improved symptoms of DSS-induced colitis. In addition, SCE ameliorated histopathological damages of the mucus layer in colon tissues and decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines in colitis-induced mice. SCE also suppressed apoptosis and oxidative stress in colitis-induced colon tissues. Together, these findings suggest that SCE could be potential nutraceuticals for treating colitis.
Major gene evidence after MTHFR-segregation analysis of serum homocysteine in families of patients undergoing coronary arteriography
Elevated levels of homocysteine is a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Polymorphic alleles in the MTHFR genes that cause recessively inherited increased homocysteine level can explain only a small proportion of the observed variation in homocysteine level. To investigate additional genetic influences, we examined environmental, familial, and genetic influences on serum homocysteine levels in 661 family members of 112 probands who underwent elective coronary arteriography. Maximum likelihood methods were used to fit several genetic and non-genetic models of inheritance to these data to determine if an unobserved Mendelian major gene could explain the familial homocysteine distribution. Adjustments for age, lifestyle (smoking and alcohol consumption), serum folate and vitamin B12, and the measured genotype effect of the MTHFR C677T mutation was carried out separately for males and females using multiple regression models for homocysteine, before and after log-transformation prior to this segregation analysis. After excluding the effects of mutations in the MTHFR genes, we found evidence of a major gene acting in a co-dominant manner. Estimated mean homocysteine levels for the three putative genotypes (LL, LH, and HH) were 8.0, 10.1, and 15.9 µmol/l, respectively, with relative frequencies of 56.8%, 37.2%, and 6%, respectively. Our analysis suggested the presence of a co-dominantly expressed major gene, in addition to the effects of the MTHFR C677T mutation. The results of this study also indicated that multifactorial inheritance was supported more strongly than Mendelian inheritance alone. Our findings may have implications for attempts to identify new homocysteine susceptible genes.
A Nursing Home Telehealth System: KEEPING RESIDENTS CONNECTED
Live video and detailed images of nursing home residents can be transmitted in real time via the Internet. This telehealth system allows residents and long-term care health professionals to connect with experts not available on-site. Electronic stethoscope, otoscope, dermascope, dentalscope, and electrocardiogram are available for use via the Internet. Impediments to implementing telehealth systems in long-term care include costs and the lack of reimbursement for telehealth services. Reimbursement for telemedicine in nursing homes is limited by originating site, current procedural terminology codes, and facility location.

Inverse relationship between bioavailable testosterone and subclinical coronary artery calcification in non-obese Korean men
Although low testosterone levels in men have been associated with high risk for cardiovascular disease, little is known about the association between male sex hormones and subclinical coronary disease in men with apparently low cardiometabolic risk. This study was performed to investigate the association between male sex hormones and subclinical coronary artery calcification measured as coronary calcium score in non-obese Korean men. We examined the relationship of total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, bioavai lable testosterone and free testosterone with coronary calcium score in 291 non-obese Korean men (mean age: 52.8--- 9.3 years) not having a history of cardiovascular disease. Using multiple linear regression, we evaluated associations between log (sex hormone) levels and log (coronary calcium score) after adjusting for confounding variables in 105 men with some degree of coronary calcification defined as coronary calcium score ~〉 1. In multiple linear regression analysis, bioavailable testosterone was inversely associated with coronary calcium score (P=0.046) after adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, mean blood pressure, resting heart rate, C-reactive protein, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, hypertension medication and hyperlipidernia medication, whereas total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin and free testosterone were not (P=0.674, P=O. 121 and P=O. 102, respectively). Our findings indicate that bioavailable testosterone is inversely associated with the degree of subclinical coronary artery calcification in non-obese men.
Simulation of the extreme waves generated by typhoon Bolaven (1215) in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea
Record-breaking high waves occurred during the passage of the typhoon Bolaven(1215)(TYB) in the East China Sea(ECS) and Yellow Sea(YS) although its intensity did not reach the level of a super typhoon.Winds and directional wave measurements were made using a range of in-situ instruments mounted on an ocean tower and buoys.In order to understand how such high waves with long duration occurred,analyses have been made through measurement and numerical simulations.TYB winds were generated using the TC96 typhoon wind model with the best track data calibrated with the measurements.And then the wind fields were blended with the reanalyzed synoptic-scale wind fields for a wave model.Wave fields were simulated using WAM4.5 with adjustment of C_d for gust of winds and bottom friction for the study area.Thus the accuracy of simulations is considerably enhanced,and the computed results are also in better agreement with measured data than before.It is found that the extremely high waves evolved as a result of the superposition of distant large swells and high wind seas generated by strong winds from the front/right quadrant of the typhoon track.As the typhoon moved at a speed a little slower than the dominant wave group velocity in a consistent direction for two days,the wave growth was significantly enhanced by strong wind input in an extended fetch and non-linear interaction.
