British Thoracic Society guidelines for home oxygen use in adults
The British Thoracic Society (BTS) Home Oxygen Guideline provides detailed evidence-based guidance for the use of home oxygen for patients out of hospital. Although the majority of evidence comes from the use of oxygen in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the scope of the guidance includes patients with a variety of long-term respiratory illnesses and other groups in whom oxygen is currently ordered, such as those with cardiac failure, cancer and end-stage cardiorespiratory disease, terminal illness or cluster headache. It explores the evidence base for the use of different modalities of oxygen therapy and patient-related outcomes such as mortality, symptoms and quality of life. The guideline also makes recommendations for assessment and follow-up protocols, and risk assessments, particularly in the clinically challenging area of home oxygen users who smoke. The guideline development group is aware of the potential for confusion sometimes caused by the current nomenclature for different types of home oxygen, and rather than renaming them, has adopted the approach of clarifying those definitions, and in particular emphasising what is meant by long-term oxygen therapy and palliative oxygen therapy. The home oxygen guideline provides expert consensus opinion in areas where clinical evidence is lacking, and seeks to deliver improved prescribing practice, leading to improved compliance and improved patient outcomes, with consequent increased value to the health service.
When Is It Time to Say Enough Is Enough?
If food fills holes of loneliness, is what you reach for in moments of stress or discord, or for whenever you are simply bored, then you are an addict and you need to address what you are eating on that level. The first thing is to recognize your triggers and notice what food you reach for and then substitute with something else. If it is the way you deal with stress, learn to deal with it on another level, such as exercise, yoga, meditation or what ever you will enjoy doing. This is the same advice I give those that I treat for smoking withdrawal. Plan ahead. Accept that sugar and carbohydrates are addictive and, therefore, there is no place for them in your diet.
Decency and attitude were winners in Amazing Race
Way to go Uchenna and Joyce. For those of you who don't know, Uchenna and Joyce were the winners of this round of the Amazing Race. Uchenna and Joyce always did the decent thing. They entered the race with their relationship in dire straits. They were having problems conceiving a child and it was tearing them apart. They were not even sure they would continue their relationship. But through the challenges and struggles, they grew closer, their admiration and love for one another stronger. And in the end, they won, and the money was just gravy to them. They were just happy for the experience and rediscovering each other. All they need is a change in attitude. It is not easy but the results are truly worth it. Like Uchenna and Joyce the journey is a long and difficult one with many roadblocks and detours. Sometimes only one can do the task and sometimes teamwork is required to move the rock in the road.
Massage can be uplifting experience
The history of Thai Yoga massage is a long one. It originated in India 2500 years ago and came to the temples in Thailand with the spread of Buddhism. There are two Thai schools of thought; the northern school which emphasizes a palming and thumbing movement while using the practitioners bodyweight for pressure, while those in the south use a more relaxing technique, plucking with the fingers to stimulate the nerves. All of this is done in an attempt to stimulate the lymphatic, circulatory and nervous systems while encouraging the immune system to release toxins. It has been cited as helping with low back pain, arthritis, digestive difficulties, menstrual problems and stress-related conditions, by encouraging peace of mind while nurturing the body.
Owning problems can put you in control
'Owning it' seems to be where it is at these days. For those who are un-Oprah-ed or unfamiliar with Dr. Phil euphemisms, to own it means to be responsible for what happens in your lives, to acknowledge your role in what happens in your life. Emotionally it means we have to deal with the stuff that bothers us. It means we have to forgive those whom we would like to back over with a car. But if we think about it, by continuing to hold a grudge or obsessing over things that have happened we are bonding ourselves to them even more. And as hard as it is to forgive we are actually doing it for ourselves and no one else. We forgive ourselves. We may have heard this all before, but this type of activity allows the part of our brain that feels happiness, love and joy to remain open. This is crucial for our health, both physical and mental. I think that one of the major reasons we in North America suffer from so many physical ailments is that we are closing down emotionally. Refusing to put down the bags and own our responsibilities all in the name of not wanting to get hurt, or feeling like they are constantly being victimized and that they have no control over anything.
Spring season important time for cleansing body
It carries the burden of determining our immunity, and provides blood for us, but to us alternative practitioners it is the spleens ability to convert the food we eat to useable stuff that is most important. So if the spleen is responsible for converting what we eat to quality raw materials, it truly becomes a case of garbage in, garbage out. This is very important as a dirty terrain, as we refer to it, is the cause of so many health problems such as allergies, asthmas, migraines, menstrual disorders, attention deficit disorders to name a few.
Will power controllable force
Needless to say, it all comes from the sense of balance that we carry in our bodies. It seems that women have a worse sense of will power than men, but with good reason and it all relates to the energy from the kidney. The Chinese assigned the primary organs of the body extra tasks in addition to our normal physiology and the kidney was given the job of managing will power. The same goes for decision-making. This time it is the job of the liver, but the liver has the arduous task of dealing with the emotions and handling stress so just imagine how well it works trying to deal with all the homotoxins we ingest as well as trying to handle all the emotional garbage we dump on it. It is a wonder we can function at all. The First Noble Truth in Buddhism states that it is through our own hand that we suffer on this earth, meaning that we choose our path, we decide to go that way. In order to change it, we must accept responsibility for our actions as we made the decision to do it and either had the will to accept where it lead us, or usually if the path was too tough we jumped ship citing that we could not handle it.
Kids need healthy lifestyle
None of this was particularly new to me. I have a number of pre- adolescent/adolescent patients who have been branded ADHD/ADD/ODD, but what is hard to fathom is the speed at which this problem is growing in our society. Dr. Guinot, the speaker I was attending on the weekend, is a world-renown doctor from France who has dedicated his time to the study of the evolution of individualized medicine. In other words, he studies how disease processes start in us as human beings from the start when we are children. We have all read the studies that have revealed the massive exposure that kids get to garbage food via the media. They are over- whelmed with the stuff. Bright colorful breakfast cereal, just lovin it with McDonalds, cookies that dance. Couple that with intelligence sucking play station/gameboy/x-box options and it is no wonder that we have build a society of over-stimulated, hyped up kids with a strong sense of what they want.
Biography affects health
It is a self-defense mechanism, or more like a self-destruction mechanism. This approach really causes us to shut down emotionally to everyone around us, including ourselves to prevent \"getting burned\" again. But all we are doing is setting a pattern or template for behavior that removes things from our control, and once we empower an outside force to control what happens to us, then nothing can really be our fault, good or bad. Among the most problematic issues is the one of anger. It is perfectly fine to be angry, but when left too long it will fester like a deep splinter and spread and eventually render you incapable of functioning how you would like. It takes a lot of energy to remain angry at people, things, events, but we need to learn to let it go, it is killing us, not the person or thing with whom or what we are upset. We some how think that if we stay in this state of mind we are punishing the bad guy, but we are only hurting ourselves. These things are not easy to do. Rajan Sankaran, a famous Indian homeopath says that people have levels of perception, the first three being where most of us live our lives. These are defined by who we are, meaning what do we do for a living, where we are and the delusions of life we have built around us to support the first two. Sankaran says that the road to totally health and freedom means that the person must set aside these and look further into truly what they are, many of which refuse to do as it means accepting that the delusions of life they have are built on an illusion.
