Radical reform : Islamic ethics and liberation
This book tackles head-on the rulings of Islamic jurists that make Islam seem incompatible with modern, scientifically, and technologically advanced, democratic societies. The book argues that it is crucial to find theoretical and practical solutions that will enable Western Muslims to remain faithful to Islamic ethics while fully living within their societies and their time. It notes that Muslim scholars often refer to the notion of ijtihâd (critical and renewed reading of the foundational texts) as the only way for Muslims to take up these modern challenges. But, the book argues, in practice such readings have effectively reached the limits of their ability to serve the faithful in the West as well as the East. This book sets forward a radical new concept of ijtihâd, which puts context—including the knowledge derived from the hard and human sciences, cultures, and their geographic and historical contingencies—on an equal footing with the scriptures as a source of Islamic law. This global and comprehensive approach, it says, seems to be the only way to go beyond the current limits and face up to the crisis in contemporary Islamic thought: Muslims need a contemporary global and applied ethics. After setting out this proposal, the book applies a new methodology to several practical case studies involving controversial issues in five areas: medical ethics, education, economics, marriage and divorce, culture, and creativity.

Western Muslims and the Future of Islam

The book's goal is to create an independent Western Islam, anchored not in the traditions of Islamic countries but in the cultural reality of the West. It begins by offering a fresh reading of Islamic sources, interpreting them for a Western context and demonstrating how a new understanding of universal Islamic principles can open the door to integration into Western societies. The author contends that Muslims can—indeed must—be faithful to their principles while participating fully in the civic life of Western secular societies. This book offers a vision of a new Muslim Identity that rejects the idea that Islam must be defined in opposition to the West.

في كتاب \"الإسلام والحرية\" يحاول رمضان وضع الأمور فى نصابها، وتحطيم الحواجز المسببة لمشاعر عدم التسامح فى الغرب، كما يحاول التصدى التحديات والصعاب التى تعمق الانقسام وتركز على تلك الحساسيات العميقة الناتجة عن الصور النمطية للدين الإسلامى واتباعه فى البلدان الأوروبية والغرب عموما، وهو يسعى باستخدام لغة واضحة إلى تغيير المضامين والسياقات الشائعة حول الهجرة والدين والتطرف وربطها بدل ذلك بالكرامة الإنسانية والتعددية الثقافية والعدالة الاجتماعية. ويدعو الكتاب الكتاب الصادر عن \"دار بلو مزبرى\" المسلمين فى الغرب إلى أن يعتبروا أنفسهم غربيين يدينون بالإسلام، وأن يتعامل معهم الغربيون الأصليون على أساس من المواطنة لا بالنظر إلى كونهم آخرين يدينون بالإسلام ويشكلون خطرا على الهوية الغربية وعلى التجانس السكاني، رافضا أسلمة المشكلات الاجتماعية، بل يتعين معالجة قضايا مثل البطالة والتهميش الاجتماعي وغيرهما معالجة سياسية، داعيا إلى إعادة تقويم المناهج التعليمية خاصة التاريخ والأدب والفلسفة لجعلها أكثر تمثيلا لتاريخ مشترك ومتضمنة لخبراته الثرية، مؤكدا فى الآن ذاته على ضرورة أن يبدأ الغرب حوارا جادا وعميقا وبناء ليس فقط مع الآخر ولكن أيضا مع نفسه. يشار أن الدكتور طارق رمضان من مواليد جنيف بسويسرا وهو مفكر أوروبى من أصل مصري، يعمل أستاذ الدراسات الإسلامية المعاصرة فى جامعة أوكسفورد، قسم الدراسات الشرقية بكلية القديس أنتونى، وأستاذ الأديان وحوار الأديان فى قسم الدراسات اللاهوتية بنفس الجامعة، كذلك يعمل أستاذا زائرا فى كلية الدراسات الإسلامية بدولة قطر، وفى الجامعة الماليزية \"بيرليز\"، وباحثا فى جامعة دوشيشا باليابان، كما يرأس مركز الدراسات التشريعية والأخلاق بالدوحة، فضلا عن كونه رئيس المركز الأوروبى فى بروكسل، وعضو الاتحاد العالمي لعلماء المسلمين.

Ramadan in this work lays out the basic ideas he stands for in clear and accessible prose. He describes the book as a work of clarification, directed at ordinary citizens, politicians, journalist and others who are curious (or skeptical) about his positions. Aware that that he is dealing with emotional issues, Ramadan tries to get past the barriers of prejudice and misunderstanding to speak directly, from the heart, to his Muslim and non-Muslim readers alike.
