Trip-hop marks a generation
Pioneering this movement in music is Massive Attack, a small collective of DJs, singers and studio wizards who hail from small- town Bristol, England. Several years back when electronic music was nothing more than keyboard pyrotechnics, Massive Attack released the debut album, Blue Lines, which helped create a new direction in dance-based pop. The musical roots of trip-hop can be traced to the early British rap scene: In 1983 a group of Bristolians converged to form the Wild Bunch sound system. Among their ranks was Nellee Hooper (who went on to produce \"Protection\" as well as albums for Bjork and Madonna). The group held impromptu club parties where, drawing on the diverse talent and inspiration of its members, it would produce an outlandish blend of music. Robert Del Naja (3-D), Grant Marshal (Daddy G) and Andrew Vowles (Mushroom) came out of that scene in 1987 to form the creative core of Massive Attack and three years later signed to Circa records. Since then, the group has charted a path through the terrain of disparate musical genres, breaking boundaries and creating a modernized version of World Music.
Building on the base-ics
Barely before he has a chance to sit down, Dr. Yosef Shapiro leans across his table and states with an emphatic seriousness, \"I'm not your typical start-up entrepreneur.\" He is also the founder and general manager of the Yokne'am-based start-up Celletra. The company is looking to make big waves in the ever-growing market of cellular infrastructure with a state-of-the- art architectural design for cellular communication base stations. Shapiro does some quick mathematical tap dancing to project what his cut of the pie might eventually be. The projections are for 700 million cellular subscribers by the year 2003, an approximate growth of 400 million subscribers over the next four years. Shapiro estimates his product's worth to be about $100 dollars per subscriber, making the cellular market a $40 billion jackpot by 2003.
An Anglo lifeline in limbo
No one at RadioWest denies it was broadcasting illegally. But they say attempts to make the station legal have been stymied, and that it was closed because it was 'politically convenient.' Tahl Raz reports For close to two years, a dedicated group of English- speaking immigrants broadcast programs in their native language from a makeshift studio in Givat Shaul to the Jerusalem area. As operators of an unlicensed radio station, they squeezed their way onto the airwaves, using a vacant frequency to broadcast all-English radio, 24 hours a day, except Shabbat. RadioWest catered to the capital's relatively large English- speaking population with programming that included local and international news, topical programs dealing with issues of interest to recent immigrants, and lots of rock music.

Even the IPO goes pop at Arad
In a tradition that spans well over a decade, Israeli musicians - both living legends and ambitious upstarts - will gather from July 6 to July 8 for the 17th year of the Arad Hebrew Song Festival. The festival's artistic director, Dani Robas, sees the event as the most important single platform for Israeli music and has scheduled three days of non-stop music: 80 bands from around the country, 40 youth groups, an electronic music presentation, the Israeli Philharmonic, and of course, the who's who of local singers.

Beit Lessin strides into 2000
A preview of Beit Lessin's 1999/2000 season reveals a refreshing repertoire of straight plays, unaugmented by the song-and-dance trends found elsewhere or the eye-tickling pyrotechnics of theater gone Disney. Beit Lessin's general manager, Tzippi Pines, insists on presenting the age-old synergy between the vision of a solitary playwright and the talents of a stage actor. All this is with an eye to the future: Pines is aware of the potential been-there, done-that ennui of rehashed greats; she believes that, \"On the eve of the millennium theater must move forward and re-invent itself by constantly describing the changing world we live in.\"
