Liquid microjets are a common means of delivering protein crystals to the focus of X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) for serial femtosecond crystallography measurements. The high X-ray intensity in the focus initiates an explosion of the microjet and sample. With the advent of X-ray FELs with megahertz rates, the typical velocities of these jets must be increased significantly in order to replenish the damaged material in time for the subsequent measurement with the next X-ray pulse. This work reports the results of a megahertz serial diffraction experiment at the FLASH FEL facility using 4.3 nm radiation. The operation of gas-dynamic nozzles that produce liquid microjets with velocities greater than 80 m s −1 was demonstrated. Furthermore, this article provides optical images of X-ray-induced explosions together with Bragg diffraction from protein microcrystals exposed to trains of X-ray pulses repeating at rates of up to 4.5 MHz. The results indicate the feasibility for megahertz serial crystallography measurements with hard X-rays and give guidance for the design of such experiments.

Pump–probe capabilities at the SPB/SFX instrument of the European XFEL
2022
Pump–probe experiments at X‐ray free‐electron laser (XFEL) facilities are a powerful tool for studying dynamics at ultrafast and longer timescales. Observing the dynamics in diverse scientific cases requires optical laser systems with a wide range of wavelength, flexible pulse sequences and different pulse durations, especially in the pump source. Here, the pump–probe instrumentation available for measurements at the Single Particles, Clusters, and Biomolecules and Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (SPB/SFX) instrument of the European XFEL is reported. The temporal and spatial stability of this instrumentation is also presented. The pump–probe capabilities at the SPB/SFX instrument of the European XFEL are discussed.

The advent of X‐ray free‐electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized fundamental science, from atomic to condensed matter physics, from chemistry to biology, giving researchers access to X‐rays with unprecedented brightness, coherence and pulse duration. All XFEL facilities built until recently provided X‐ray pulses at a relatively low repetition rate, with limited data statistics. Here, results from the first megahertz‐repetition‐rate X‐ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL are presented. The experimental capabilities that the SCS instrument offers, resulting from the operation at megahertz repetition rates and the availability of the novel DSSC 2D imaging detector, are illustrated. Time‐resolved magnetic X‐ray scattering and holographic imaging experiments in solid state samples were chosen as representative, providing an ideal test‐bed for operation at megahertz rates. Our results are relevant and applicable to any other non‐destructive XFEL experiments in the soft X‐ray range. Results from the first megahertz‐repetition‐rate X‐ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL are presented.

In this work, we present measurements of the intensity-dependent photoelectron spectrum of Kr irradiated by the FLASH FEL tuned to a photon energy of 25.8 eV. Intensity dependent photoelectron spectra were obtained with the aid of a Velocity Map Imaging (VMI) spectrometer. As the FEL photon energy is close to threshold, two photon sequential double ionization is favoured. The number of open channels is kept to a minimum and leading to a simple description of the process.

Due to its element- and site-specificity, inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy is a widely used technique to probe the chemical structure of matter. Here we show that time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy can be employed to observe ultrafast chemical reactions and the electronic response to the nuclear motion with high sensitivity. The ultraviolet dissociation of iodomethane (CH\\(_3\\)I) is investigated by ionization above the iodine 4d edge, using time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron and photoion spectroscopy. The dynamics observed in the photoelectron spectra appear earlier and are faster than those seen in the iodine fragments. The experimental results are interpreted using crystal field and spin-orbit configuration interaction calculations, and demonstrate that time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful tool to directly track ultrafast structural and electronic transformations in gas-phase molecules.

The dynamics following laser-induced molecular photodissociation of gas-phase CH\\(_2\\)BrI at 271.6 nm were investigated by time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging using intense near-IR femtosecond laser pulses. The observed delay-dependent photofragment momenta reveal that CH\\(_2\\)BrI undergoes C-I cleavage, depositing 65.6% of the available energy into internal product states, and that absorption of a second UV photon breaks the C-Br bond of CH\\(_2\\)Br. Simulations confirm that this mechanism is consistent with previous data recorded at 248 nm, demonstrating the sensitivity of Coulomb explosion imaging as a real-time probe of chemical dynamics.
Audit quality, firm performance and risk: evidence from Greece
2023
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to accentuate whether audit quality or other variables matter for the performance of companies in Greece.
Design/methodology/approach
This study examines the effect of audit quality on firm performance using data of 75 companies listed in the Athens Exchange in Greece and covering the period 2018–2021. Panel data analysis is applied. The independent variables are audit quality, the size of firms, their age, leverage, liquidity and efficiency ratios. Seven alternative measures of performance are used, including, among others, return on assets and return on equity. Stock returns and risks are used too.
Findings
The results provide evidence of a positive relationship between financial performance and audit quality. The opposite is the case for stock returns and risk. On the other explanatory variables, age has a clearly negative relationship with financial performance. The opposite is the case for liquidity and efficiency. The size factor also has some sort of a positive correlation with financial performance, whereas the opposite correlation concerns the leverage ratio.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the relationship between audit quality and firm performance with data from Greece.
