Permeability evolution of Bentheim Sandstone at simulated georeservoir conditions
Bentheim Sandstone is considered a suitable conventional georeservoir rock even at great depth because of its mineral composition, homogeneity, micro- and macrostructure, and is also used as a reference material in rock deformation tests. However, a full characterization of the permeability at representative depths has never been performed. Here we report new experimental data where the permeability of Bentheim Sandstone is measured both with a simultaneous variation and with a sequential variation of three different variables to simulate georeservoir conditions. The results indicate a decrease in permeability with simulated increasing depth until 2–3 km, followed by a partial permeability recovery until 4–5 km depth. During the exhumation path, initially, permeability is unaffected, but at shallow depths, a sharp increase in permeability is observed, likely due to microcracking. These variations are a consequence of a complex interaction between stress, pore pressure and temperature, highlighting the importance of experiments considering all three variables when studying the evolution of permeability at depth. These results will aid with the accurate estimation of permeability at different georeservoir conditions.

Microbial and Chemical Characterization of Underwater Fresh Water Springs in the Dead Sea
Due to its extreme salinity and high Mg concentration the Dead Sea is characterized by a very low density of cells most of which are Archaea. We discovered several underwater fresh to brackish water springs in the Dead Sea harboring dense microbial communities. We provide the first characterization of these communities, discuss their possible origin, hydrochemical environment, energetic resources and the putative biogeochemical pathways they are mediating. Pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and community fingerprinting methods showed that the spring community originates from the Dead Sea sediments and not from the aquifer. Furthermore, it suggested that there is a dense Archaeal community in the shoreline pore water of the lake. Sequences of bacterial sulfate reducers, nitrifiers iron oxidizers and iron reducers were identified as well. Analysis of white and green biofilms suggested that sulfide oxidation through chemolitotrophy and phototrophy is highly significant. Hyperspectral analysis showed a tight association between abundant green sulfur bacteria and cyanobacteria in the green biofilms. Together, our findings show that the Dead Sea floor harbors diverse microbial communities, part of which is not known from other hypersaline environments. Analysis of the water's chemistry shows evidence of microbial activity along the path and suggests that the springs supply nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter to the microbial communities in the Dead Sea. The underwater springs are a newly recognized water source for the Dead Sea. Their input of microorganisms and nutrients needs to be considered in the assessment of possible impact of dilution events of the lake surface waters, such as those that will occur in the future due to the intended establishment of the Red Sea-Dead Sea water conduit.

Water–rock interactions in the Bruchsal geothermal system by U–Th series radionuclides
Uranium and thorium decay series disequilibria in deep geothermal brines are a result of water–rock interaction processes. The migratory behavior of radionuclides provides valuable site-specific information and can therefore be an important tool for reservoir characterization and sustainable management of geothermal sites. In this study, we present data from long-term monitoring of naturally occurring 238U, 232Th and 235U series radionuclides analyzed in brine samples collected from the Permo-Triassic sedimentary reservoir rock at the Bruchsal geothermal site (SW Germany). The results show that radionuclides of the elements radium (226Ra, 228Ra, 224Ra, 223Ra), radon (222Rn), and lead (210Pb, 212Pb) are rather soluble in brine, while isotopes of uranium (238U, 234U, 235U), thorium (232Th, 228Th, 230Th), polonium (210Po), and actinium (227Ac, 228Ac) have low solubilities and are mostly immobile. Activities of radium isotopes in the geothermal brine exceed those of their thorium progenitors (average 226Ra = 29.9 Bq kg−1, about 103 times that of its 230Th parent). Modelling the observed disequilibria allows the following conclusion on water–rock interaction processes: (1) supply from alpha-recoil depends on isotope half-life because it is limited by the rate of diffusion through microfractures causing isotopic fractionation. (2) Radium retardation due to adsorption is low (226Ra/222Rn = 1.3) resulting in adsorption–desorption rate constants in the order of 10−10 s−1 for k1 and 10−9 for k2. (3) Scavenging of 226Ra from brine can best be explained by co-precipitation with barite resulting in an observed 226Ra anomaly in the solids of the reservoir section. The precipitation rate constant amounts to ca. 3.4 × 10−8 s−1 corresponding to a mean removal time of radium from brine by mineral precipitation to approximately 1 year.
Permeability distribution in the Lahendong geothermal field: A blind fault captured by thermal–hydraulic simulation
Subsurface fluid flow of reservoirs in active tectonic regions is mainly controlled by permeability of fault zones. Therefore, the characterization of fault zones is an important step toward performance assessment of a reservoir. The fluid flow is controlled also by pressure and temperature conditions. In this context, we simulated pressure and temperature fields to elaborate on the influence of permeability on subsurface fluid flow in the Lahendong geothermal reservoir. Thermal–hydraulic simulation is performed using a finite element approach. Adjusting the permeability through 370 different cases, modeling results converged to the observed data within a misfit range of 0–7 %. The best fitting models identified a deep-seated fault that has previously not been traced at the surface. Simulated temperature distribution suggests a prominent convective heat flow, driven by an upward migrating and SW–NE oriented fluid flow. This hydraulic gradient causes a pressure drop along the reservoir. High-pressure patterns are used to constrain recharge areas, in addition to infiltration measurements. Discharge flow occurs from SW to NE migrating also upward toward the hot springs. In that frame, thermal–hydraulic simulations identified previously unresolved subsurface faults, which now allow a better understanding of the subsurface permeability and its influence on fluid flow.
Verification benchmark for a single-phase flow hydro - mechanical model comparison between COMSOL Multiphysics and DuMuX
Numerical modelling of hydromechanical processes in geological environments has become an invaluable tool in understanding and predicting system behaviour. However, due to the different algorithms and numerical schemes implemented in the different models, model reliability may vary considerably. Modelling of single- and multi-phase flow in porous media has been widely employed in various engineering applications such as geological disposal of nuclear waste, geological storage of carbon dioxide, high-temperature geothermal systems, or hydraulic fracturing for shale gas exploitation. Coupled hydro-mechanical (H-M) processes play a key role in the prediction of the behaviour of geological reservoirs during their development and testing operations. In this paper, we present a benchmark test on a single-phase flow problem in a hydrogeological reservoir with 5 horizontal layers of different properties. The aim is to compare two hydromechanical (H-M) models that use a vertex-centred finite-volume discretization and a finite element discretization. The first model is constructed with the free-open source simulator DuMuX, and the second with the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics. The verification study suggests general confidence in the model reliability, but also highlights and discusses several areas of discrepancies between two models.
