The Recent Developments of Thermomechanical Processing for Biomedical Mg Alloys and Their Clinical Applications
2025
Magnesium (Mg) alloys have gained much attention for biomedical applications, due to their attractive properties, such as high specific strength, low density, low elasticity modulus, high damping capacity, biodegradation, and relatively good cytocompatibility. However, the biomedical use of Mg alloys also faces several challenges, primarily due to their low corrosion resistance and insufficient strength. Therefore, improving the strength and corrosion resistance of biomedical Mg alloys has become a critical issue. This review briefly summarizes the selection of appropriate alloying elements for biomedical Mg alloys, which is the fundamental factor in determining their microstructure, cytocompatibility, mechanical properties, and corrosion performance. It also discusses typical thermomechanical processing methods, including hot extrusion, hot rolling and hot forging, and examines the influence of deformation mode on microstructure, mechanical properties, and degradation behavior. Specifically, combining different thermomechanical processing methods could be an optimal choice, as it leverages the high efficiency and effectiveness of each method. Finally, the clinical application of biomedical Mg alloys in various fields are summarized and discussed to highlight their potential prospect and corresponding challenges. This review aims to provide insights for the rationale design and development of high-performance biomedical Mg alloys for widespread clinical applications.

This study proposes a hybrid machine learning model based on full-spectrum pulsed neutron logging data to address the monitoring challenges of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) under complex geological conditions. Traditional interpretation models for sequestered CO2 saturation (e.g., macroscopic capture cross-section model, characteristic peak count model, and ratio model) heavily rely on prior parameters such as porosity, formation water salinity, and lithology. Acquiring these parameters in real time during practical engineering is often costly and difficult. To reduce the rigid dependence of accurate CO2 saturation monitoring on complex prior parameters like porosity and salinity under heterogeneous geological settings, this research focuses on the Pearl River Mouth Basin, a core carbon sequestration target area in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, based on the evaluation results of offshore carbon sequestration macro-regions in China. Taking the primary reservoirs of the Enping and Wenchang Formations as typical geological prototypes, a high-fidelity, full-spectrum neutron–gamma response database was constructed using Monte Carlo simulations. Two machine learning strategies are proposed: a direct regression model (NMF+SVR) and a joint model (NMF+SVC/KMeans+SVR). Based on Monte Carlo simulated data, experimental results demonstrate that, compared with traditional petrophysical baseline models and simple machine learning models, the proposed joint learning method effectively reduces the dependence of CO2 saturation monitoring on lithology and porosity. Furthermore, it is proven that even with a single-detector tool configuration, the method exhibits high prediction accuracy under complex lithological conditions. Notably, the two-step joint model achieves a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) as low as 4.200%, significantly outperforming traditional physics-based models and single machine learning models such as MLP and RF. This study provides a physically interpretable and accurate technical reference for applying machine learning to pulsed neutron-logging-based CO2 geological sequestration monitoring.

In the present study, the coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling of micro-holes in Cf/SiC composites, coupled with nanosecond laser drilling in air for fabricating micro-holes with high aspect ratios, were investigated. The surface morphology, reaction products, and micro-hole shapes were thoroughly examined. The results reveal that, for the coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling of micro-holes in the Cf/SiC composite, the increasing of waterjet velocity enhances the material removal rate and micro-hole depth, but reduces the micro-hole diameter and taper angle. The coaxial waterjet isolates the laser-ablated region and cools down the corresponding region rapidly, leading to the formation of a mixture of SiC, SiO2, and Si on the surface. As the coaxial waterjet velocity increases, the morphology of residual surface products changes from a net-like structure to individual spheres. Coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling, with a waterjet velocity of 9.61 m/s, achieves micro-holes with a good balance between efficiency and quality. For the fabrication of micro-holes with a high aspect ratio in Cf/SiC composites, micro-holes fabricated by nanosecond laser drilling in air exhibit obvious taper features, which should be ascribed to the combined effects of spattering slag, plasma, and energy dissipation. The application of coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling on micro-holes fabricated by laser drilling in air effectively expands the hole diameter. The fabricated micro-holes have very small taper angles, with clean wall surfaces and almost no reaction products. This approach, combining nanosecond laser drilling in air followed by coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling, offers a promising technique for fabricating high-quality micro-holes with high aspect ratios in Cf/SiC composites.

Effect of Interface Pretreatment of Al Alloy on Bonding Strength of the Laser Joined Al/CFRTP Butt Joint
2021
In the present research, the carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) was laser joined with the Al alloy whose joining interface was pretreated by laser micro-texturing, anodizing, and hybrid of laser micro-texturing and anodizing. The surface morphology of the pretreated Al joining interface and bonding strength of the corresponding Al/CFRTP butt joint were investigated. The results show that the laser micro-texturing has fabricated the micro-pit or micro-furrow in the Al joining interface. With the increasing of laser scanning times, the size of the micro-pit or micro-furrow decreases, when the laser scanning distance is constant. The bonding strength of the Al/CFRTP butt joint with Al joining interface pretreated by micro-texturing fluctuates with the increasing of laser scanning distance and times, reaching the maximum value of 20 MPa at laser scanning distance of 0.1 mm and 1 time. The anodizing pretreatment has formed the Al2O3 oxide layer on the Al joining interface. The Al/CFRTP butt joint with Al joining interface pretreated by anodizing obtains the maximum bonding strength of 11 MPa at anodizing time of 10 min. The hybrid pretreatment of micro-texturing and subsequent anodizing fabricates the regular grid structure with smooth micro-furrow and micro-pit, while the hybrid pretreatment of anodizing and subsequent micro-texturing fabricates the Al joining interface with explosive micro-pit and micro-furrow. The bonding strength of the Al/CFRTP butt joint with hybrid-pretreated Al joining interface is relative better than that of the Al/CFRTP butt joint with anodizing-pretreated Al joining interface but almost lower than that of the Al/CFRTP butt joint with micro-texturing pretreated Al joining interface. Such results should be attributed to the surface morphology of the Al joining interface.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composites are widely used in automobile, aerospace and military lightweight manufacturing due to their excellent mechanical properties such as light weight, excellent fracture resistance, corrosion resistance and wear resistance, etc. However, because of their high hardness, anisotropy and low interlayer strength characteristics, there are many problems with machine carbon fiber-reinforced composites with traditional methods. As a non-contact processing technology, laser machining technology has lots of advantages in carbon fiber-reinforced composites processing. However, there are also some defects produced in laser machining process such the heat affected zone, delamination and fiber extraction due to the great difference of physical properties between the carbon fibers and the resin matrix. To improve the quality of carbon fiber-reinforced composites laser machining, lots of works have been carried out. In this paper, the research progress of carbon fiber-reinforced composites laser machining parameters optimization and numerical simulation was summarized, the characteristics of laser cutting carbon fiber-reinforced composites and cutting quality influence factors were discussed, and the developing trend of the carbon fiber-reinforced composites laser cutting was prospected.

Improvement of Micro-Hole Processing in SiCf/SiC Ceramic Matrix Composite Using Efficient Two-Step Laser Drilling
2025
SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composite (CMC), a hard and brittle material, faces significant challenges in efficient and high-quality processing of small-sized shapes. To address these challenges, the nanosecond laser was used to process micro-holes in the SiCf/SiC CMC using a two-step drilling method, including laser pre-drilling in air and laser final-drilling with a water jet. The results of the single-parameter variation and optimized orthogonal experiments reveal that the optimal parameters for laser pre-drilling in air to process micro-holes are as follows: 1000 processing cycles, 0.7 mJ single-pulse energy, −4 mm defocus, 15 kHz pulse-repetition frequency, and 85% overlap rate. With these settings, a micro-hole with an entrance diameter of 343 μm and a taper angle of 1.19° can be processed in 100 s, demonstrating high processing efficiency. However, the entrance region exhibits spattering slags with oxidation, while the sidewall is covered by the recast layer with a wrinkled morphology and attached oxides. These effects are primarily attributed to the presence of oxygen, which enhances processing efficiency but promotes oxidation. For the laser final-drilling with a water jet, the balanced parameters for micro-hole processing are as follows: 2000 processing cycles, 0.6 mJ single-pulse energy, −4 mm defocus, 10 kHz pulse-repetition frequency, 85% overlap rate, and a 4.03 m/s water jet velocity. Using these parameters, the pre-drilled micro-hole can be finally processed in 96 s, yielding an entrance diameter of 423 μm and a taper angle of 0.36°. Due to the effective elimination of spattering slags and oxides by the water jet, the final micro-hole exhibits a clean sidewall with microgrooves, indicating high-quality micro-hole processing. The sidewall morphology could be ascribed to the different physical properties of SiC fiber and matrix, with steam explosion and cavitation erosion. This two-step laser drilling may provide new insights into the high-quality and efficient processing of SiCf/SiC CMC with small-sized holes.

The functional recovery of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is unsatisfactory, whereas diabetes mellitus (DM) and its related complications further attenuate the restoration of diabetic PNI (DPNI). Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are promising candidates for treatment of DPNI due to their abundant source, excellent differentiation and paracrine ability. Our results showed that ADSCs remarkably enhanced the proliferation and migration of Schwann cells and endothelial cells, and tube formation. Mechanistically, ADSCs could regulate Nrf2/HO-1, NF-
κ
B and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathways, showing multiple functions in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and regulating cell metabolism, growth, survival, proliferation, angiogenesis, differentiation of Schwann cell and myelin formation. In current study, novel graphene foam (GF)/hydrogel-based scaffold was developed to deliver ADSCs for treatment of DPNI. GF/hydrogel scaffold exhibited excellent mechanical strength, suitable porous network, superior electrical conductivity, and good biocompatibility.
In vitro
results revealed that GF/hydrogel scaffold could obviously accelerate proliferation of Schwann cells. Moreover,
in vivo
experiments demonstrated that ADSCs-loaded GF/hydrogel scaffold significantly promoted the recovery of DPNI and inhibited the atrophy of targeted muscles, thus providing a novel and attractive therapeutic approach for DPNI patients.

Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of a Directionally Solidified Nb-Ti-Si-Cr-Al-Hf-Dy Alloy
2016
The Nb-Ti-Si-Cr-Al-Hf-Dy alloy was prepared by conventionally casting and then directionally solidified (DS) with the optical floating zone melting technology. Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the as cast (AC) and DS alloys were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, compression and bending tests. The results exhibit that α-(Nb, Ti)5Si3, (Ti, Nb)5Si3 and (Nb, Ti)ss phases formed the microstructure of the AC alloy, with precipitates of Cr2Nb, Dy2O3 and (Nb, Ti)3Si along phase or grain boundaries. The DS alignes (Nb, Ti)ss and α-(Nb, Ti)5Si3 lamellae parallel to the growth direction and refines the eutectic cell, but coarsens the primary α-(Nb, Ti)5Si3 phase. The DS alloy exhibits strong orientation of (310)(Nb, Ti)5Si3 and (110)(Nb, Ti)ss along the growth direction. TEM observation reveals that (Nb, Ti)ss and α-(Nb, Ti)5Si3 phases have an orientation relationship of [110](Nb, Ti)ss // [310]α-(Nb, Ti)5Si3 and (002)(Nb, Ti)ss // (002)α-(Nb, Ti)5Si3. Compared with the AC alloy, the DS increases the mechanical properties of the alloy obviously and the alloy DS at 8 mm/h exhibits the best mechanical properties.
