Pulmonary edema associated with scuba diving: Case reports and review

Acute pulmonary edema has been associated with cold-water immersion in swimmers and divers. We report on eight divers using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba) who developed acute pulmonary edema manifested by dyspnea, hypoxemia, and characteristic chest radiographic findings. All cases occurred in cold water. All scuba divers were treated with complete resolution, and three have returned to diving without further episodes. Mechanisms that would contribute to a raised capillary transmural pressure or to a reduced blood-gas barrier function or integrity are discussed. Pulmonary edema in scuba divers is multifactorial, and constitutional factors may play a role. Physicians should be aware of this potential, likely underreported, problem in scuba divers.

Academic readiness
2015
Making postsecondary education more accessible has highlighted the issue of what it means to be prepared for college. A significant number of students enter college with preparedness issues—academic and otherwise—that challenge potential success. For African American students, educational, social, and economic factors combine to create barriers that are often more acute and therefore more difficult to overcome as they strive to negotiate the intricate fabric of elements associated with completing college. This article describes the development and implementation of a comprehensive summer transition program at an HBCU that attempts to weave a seamless strategy of preparation and acclimation that will enhance academic readiness, self-efficacy, skills, and habits necessary for college success. This highly structured approach is generating practices that could become key factors in improving retention and graduation rates.

The student-authored essay as a teaching tool
2010
Students who enter college dreading their \"required\" courses are understandably skeptical of their ability to succeed in first-year writing. Their lack of preparation added to their skepticism results in students with too little confidence that their writing will ever resemble the models used in textbooks. As a tool of engagement, student-authored essays provide writing models students readily identify with, thereby promoting confidence. This analysis examines student perceptions of the student-authored essay as a writing tool and the implications of its use to improve learning outcomes in first-year writing courses. Tobacco harm reduction: Conceptual structure and nomenclature for analysis and research

2002
The goal of tobacco control has always been to reduce death and disease due to tobacco use. Recent discussions have broadened the concept of tobacco control beyond cessation and prevention to include concepts such as the use of medications to achieve reduction in tobacco use, chemoprevention to reduce disease, modifications of tobacco products to reduce toxicity, and behavioral approaches to change smoking and tobacco use behavior. Within each of these broad domains, diverse approaches have been suggested. To facilitate clear discussion and analysis, and to avoid confusion among approaches, we catalog 19 approaches to harm reduction, distinguishing and discussing them on 11 dimensions, including their objectives, mechanisms, toxicology, expected population risks, and consumer appeal. Because there have also been so many suggested applications of medicinal nicotine to smoking intervention, we separately catalog and analyze nine applications, some of which constitute new approaches to harm reduction. The suggested framework is intended to clarify the debate, provide for common nomenclature, and facilitate analysis of diverse approaches to tobacco harm reduction.

We are in an era of voting anti-establishment. This means uncertainty for capital markets and real estate all over the world
2025
First is Covid, and the subsequent heightened awareness of health and wellbeing. Not only is the human and real estate aspect in Ukraine a very real consideration in addition to political allegiances and tensions elsewhere, business confidence will always be shaken by conflict, particularly in the modern world where warfare is as much fought in cyberspace and with the constant threat of nuclear weapons. Generally in developed economies there is more freedom in casting/choosing those votes; this has led to change for change's sake or anti-establishment results, often leaving inexperienced leaders or flawed policies.

I have always been a supporter of diversity, pushing access to real estate for all - including the less privileged

Diversity: back to the roots I am having a small time out as the market still struggles to find a level. What we need is for the banks to hold the key to ESG with real incentivisation to fund sustainable development, developers to build long-lasting buildings and the government to put in place achievable targets that are specific to the use of a building and certified via a system that means something. Data/analysis/comparison/calculation/ risk are at the heart of what we do -we need to develop and use the machines to help us to get as near to the crystal ball as possible (please could I be first?).

Food prices
1974
Program examines the impact of higher food prices on African American families living in Boston and offers suggestions on how to combat the high cost of living. Through segments containing interviews with women shopping and preparing food in their homes, co-op market organizers, nutritionist Mary Crumlin, and economist Allen Schultz, Say Brother illustrates the local population's frustration with the government, the producers of food, and the stores that distribute it. The program also contains cooking segments with Boston residents Salem Hardy and Aliayo Pryor.

London was bruised by Brexit and is still showing the bruises, but it survived - as we knew it would
2023
All nationalities were involved, private equity and property companies were taking advantage of high gearing and interest rates from 2009 until two years ago were between 0.5% and 1% - basically free money! Having delivered the acquisition - but having become disenamoured with the ensuing strategy - I left BNP PRE, taking with me a lot of knowledge and understanding about banking, European advisory and the all-too-often discussed UK-FR culture differences. A short stop, it being a destination where the model for business was past its best: placing large properties under offer with the aim of raising equity subsequently proved impossible in a more bullish market.

ESG inaction is not without cost
2023
Slade discusses the property market and environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) inaction. A key area of interest that started the year high on industry leaders' agendas is ESG. Sadly, the current economic situation is undermining recent progress in this area and this could fall down the priority list, particularly for smaller players. Putting current economic challenges aside, though, it's important to remember that inaction comes with its own costs and the countdown to the Energy Performance Certificate compliance deadline should also not be overlooked. Obsolescence could be a defining issue in future, as buildings that fail to meet new sustainability standards become difficult or even impossible to lease.
