DoomScroll: Modding Among Us to Combat Misinformation
Misinformation is one society’s most pressing issues, spreading division and chaos across the globe. Videogames have become one of the more promising mediums for misinformation interventions, teaching players common falsehood indicators and helping them develop their discernment abilities. This thesis details the design, playtesting, and evaluation of a digital game intervention intended to improve players’ misinformation discernment abilities. Through a design narrative, it first describes the design goals and development of an initial iteration of DoomScroll, a modified version of the popular social deception game Among Us. It then reports on the playtesting of DoomScroll and how player feedback was used to refine and improve the mod’s gameplay. It concludes by detailing a randomized control trial conducted to more rigorously test DoomScroll’s efficacy as a misinformation intervention tool when compared to a control condition. Player feedback regarding its socialization and replayability suggests that DoomScroll did meet its design goals by improving player motivation and increasing the likelihood of repeated use. However, further analyses showed that the mod did not produce any statistically significant improvement in players’ discernment abilities. The qualitative findings were more positive, suggesting an uneven distribution of process-driven learning did occur. This study contributes insights to improve misinformation game design and into the potential of modding as a medium for educational game development.
Cold Oil is Slow Oil
Companies are using new internal coating for pipelines; a Finnish company built Polaris, the most powerful icebreaker for the country featuring environmentally friendly dual-fuel engines; and in a race to complete a bridge in a mere two years over a North Slope channel, ConocoPhillips Alaska used new procedures that extended the work season, trimmed man-hours, and helped protect the environment. The project includes a six-mile gravel road, four bridges, thirty-two miles of pipeline, and communications and electrical infrastructure connecting CD5 to the main Alpine facilities, in addition to the onsite facilities and drill site. The timeline was tight-a mere two years-to complete the project. Because the building season is so short on the North Slope-roughly ninety days from about February to April 30-they were actually looking at two, three-month periods over that two-year span. Heat pumps, new processes and devices, internal pipe coating, and data analysis are just a few measures Alyeska is taking to resolve the slow-flow problem.

Ongoing Activity in the Arctic
Despite this massive supply of oil and natural gas, major oil companies are chilling on the Arctic, chased away by a combination of rigid US regulations, sanctions against Russia, and the shaky price of crude. Spanish company Repsol, for example, abandoned its leases for Alaska's Chukchi Sea in 2016, though in 2017 the oil giant and its partner Armstrong Energy announced the discovery of 1.2 billion barrels of oil on state land on the North Slope. Even though current oil prices are a challenge to Arctic oil and gas drilling, especially in the more difficult areas to develop, Vauraste points out that oil and gas companies eyeing the Arctic have a long-term outlook. Changing Environments Climate change is having a huge impact on the Arctic, Vauraste says-beyond melting ice and new trade routes-there remains concern over US protectionist moves and the decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement.

Moving to Rural Alaska: It Takes a Village
The coastal community of Nome, which is nearly 540-air miles from Anchorage, sits on the northern coast of the Norton Sound in the Bering Sea. Because there are no highways to Nome, flying and water transport, snowmobile, and dogsled are the only modes of transportation by which cargo can be moved to and from the town. According to Jager, about 90 percent of incoming products, such as food and household goods, arrive by marine transportation. \"Some [appliances] are ordered online or bought at other locations and shipped to the villages.\" Because flying in Alaska comes with challenges-tricky terrain, risky weather, and limited seating and cargo space on small aircraft-Ravn trains its pilots, flight crews, and employees to keep them prepared for any situation, Freitag says. The rate is based on the amount of space used, which gives consumers more control over the costs. Because shipments from Tacoma depart twice a week, it takes an average of seven to fifteen business days for goods to arrive at their destination.

TAPS After Forty Years
To be sure, there's the massive economic impact of an 800-mile, 48-inch diameter pipeline that transports crude from North America's largest oilfield, Prudhoe Bay. At its peak, the pipeline pumped more than 2 million barrels of oil a day over Alaska's tough terrain: frozen ground, mountain ranges, rivers, and earthquake faults. \"Four decades of oil and gas development in Alaska have changed Alaskan lives and provided opportunities for people across the state. From 1969 through 1977 alone, 70,000 individuals worked on the huge construction project, from engineers and carpenters to construction workers. Dan is supply chain management director and Ron is the system's pipeline and civil maintenance coordinator and works mostly in the field. The 213,543-acre oilfield triggered actions by multinational oil companies, Alaska, and Congress that resulted in the construction of the 800-mile pipeline to funnel crude oil from the North Slope to Valdez, the state's northernmost ice-free port. \"The initial vote was a 49-49 tie with Vice President Spiro Agnew casting the tie-breaking vote to approve the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act,\" Riddle says. \"Should heat transmitted from the hot oil pipeline or any ground surface disturbance created by construction activities cause thawing of the underlying permafrost soils, have been installed to protect against the cold, which allows water in the crude to separate. A recent order by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke that calls for more input in North Slope oil and gas development from local and state entities should help.

Hope by the lake
Moves that bode well for the master-planned community surrounding the 320-acre lake include: * A new school, not yet named, is being built by the Clark County School District; * Galleria Parkway opened in 2014 and provides direct access to a plethora of retail; * A new hospital, Henderson Hospital, is close to opening; * A new private athletic club called Seasons LLV is under construction; * And the area got a new grocery store called Seasons Market. The Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors reported that the median price of single-family homes sold in Southern Nevada through its Multiple Listing Service increased to $229,250 during May, up 8.5 percent from a year ago at the same time.
