In aerospace, aviation, nuclear power, and other high-tech fields, some essential moving parts must operate under high vacuum, high load, intense radiation, and other conditions. Under such extreme conditions, only solid lubricating materials can meet the lubrication requirements. Traditional material modification methods have problems such as high energy consumption, severe pollution, and narrow scope of application. Plasma modification technology can overcome these shortcomings. This paper focuses on several commonly used plasma preparation techniques for solid lubricating coatings, including plasma chemical heat treatment, physical vapor deposition, plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition, plasma spraying, and plasma electrolytic oxidation. Subsequently, the material systems of metal-based solid lubrication coatings are reviewed: soft metals, oxides, sulfides, nitrides, and carbon-based materials. Finally, found that the development of new solid lubricants, the improvement of existing preparation technology, and the development of new processes are the key development directions in the future.

In Situ Synthesis of Copper Nanoparticles on Biocarbon Sheets for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering
2025
A copper nanoparticles@porous biocarbon substrate was designed for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) via a simple reduction method. In the detection of three trace antibiotics, the substrate exhibits a very high Raman enhancement efficiency. This is partly because the biocarbon is rich in meso-micropores, which can rapidly trap target molecules. On the other hand, the copper nanoparticles embedded on the surface of the carbon sheets generate a large number of plasmonic hotspots, leading to an increase in Raman signal intensity. These results suggest that this substrate has utility for SERS applications in food safety, medicine, and water pollution detection.

Effect of Post-Plasma Nitrocarburized Treatment on Mechanical Properties of Carburized and Quenched 18Cr2Ni4WA Steel
2024
Under extreme conditions such as high speed and heavy load, 18Cr2Ni4WA steel cannot meet the service requirements even after carburizing and quenching processes. In order to obtain better surface mechanical properties and tribological property, a hollow cathode ion source diffusion strengthening device was used to nitride the traditional carburizing and quenching samples. Unlike traditional ion carbonitriding technology, the low-temperature ion carbonitriding technology used in this article can increase the surface hardness of the material by 50% after 3 h of treatment, from the original 600 HV0.1 to 900 HV0.1, while the core hardness only decreases by less than 20%. The effect of post-ion carbonitriding treatment on mechanical properties and tribological properties of the carburized and quenched 18Cr2Ni4WA steel was investigated. Samples in different treatment are characterized using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optimal SRV-4 high temperature tribotester, as well as Vickers hardness tester. Under two conditions of 6N light load and 60 N heavy load, compared with untreated samples, the wear rate of ion carbonitriding samples decreased by more than 99%, while the friction coefficient remained basically unchanged. Furthermore, the careful selection of ion nitrocarburizing and carburizing tempering temperatures in this study has been shown to significantly enhance surface hardness and wear resistance, while preserving the overall hardness of the carburized sample. The present study demonstrates the potential of ion carbonitriding technology as a viable post-treatment method for carburized gears.

SMS2, a Novel Allele of OsINV3, Regulates Grain Size in Rice
2024
Grain size has an important effect on rice yield. Although several key genes that regulate seed size have been reported in rice, their molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, a rice small grain size 2 (sms2) mutant was identified, and MutMap resequencing analysis results showed that a 2 bp insertion in the second exon of the LOC_Os02g01590 gene resulted in a grain length and width lower than those of the wild-type Teqing (TQ). We found that SMS2 encoded vacuolar acid invertase, a novel allele of OsINV3, which regulates grain size. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses showed that SMS2 was involved in endoplasmic reticulum protein synthesis, cysteine and methionine metabolism, and propionic acid metabolism, thereby regulating grain size. An analysis of sugar content in young panicles showed that SMS2 reduced sucrose, fructose, and starch contents, thus regulating grain size. A haplotype analysis showed that Hap2 of SMS2 had a longer grain and was widely present in indica rice varieties. Our results provide a new theoretical basis for the molecular and physiological mechanisms by which SMS2 regulates grain size.

TC4 alloy is widely used in dental implantation due to its excellent biocompatibility and low density. However, it is necessary to further improve the corrosion resistance and surface hardness of the titanium alloy to prevent surface damage that could result in the release of metal ions into the oral cavity, potentially affecting oral health. In this study, Ti-N-O layers were fabricated on the surface of TC4 alloy using a two-step hollow cathode plasma source oxynitriding technique. This resulted in the formation of TiN, Ti2N, TiO2, and nitrogen-stabilized α(N)-Ti phases on the TC4 alloy, forming a Ti-N-O modified layer. The microhardness of the samples treated with plasma oxynitriding (PNO) was found to be 300–400% higher than that of untreated (UN) samples. The experimental conditions were set at 520 °C, and the corrosion current density of the PNO sample was measured to be 7.65 × 10−8 A/cm2, which is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the UN sample. This indicates that the PNO-treated TC4 alloy exhibited significantly improved corrosion resistance in the artificial saliva solutions.

Symptomatic lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is widely treated using percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). In the present PELD surgery, performing decompression under endoscope still takes a long time to explore the rupture site of annulus fibrosus, resulting in prolonged operation time and over‐invasion of the undegenerated annulus fibrosus. A wide range of intraoperative exploration also induces an iatrogenic injury of the normal annulus fibrosus, even aggravating intervertebral disc degeneration, which may lead to early postoperative recurrence in severe case. Hence, it is important to seek a precise decompression in PELD surgery. Under this kind of realization, more spinal surgeons possibly choose a disc staining before performing decompression. However, the classical disc staining technique still has its shortcomings. First of all, an appropriate dose of staining cannot be accurately mastered, even induces unqualified staining effect. Second, the duration of surgery and the times of fluoroscopy will be increased. Finally, what surgeons see under the endoscope is the staining result but not the staining process. Hence, this is accomplished more effectively by designing procedures that perform fully visible disc staining under spinal endoscope. There is no specific research to discuss the technique note of endoscopic staining in PELD surgery. We have come up with a new original technology of endoscopic staining with methylene blue injection in PELD for treatment of LDH. This current study is to display a series cases using a new and original endoscopic disc staining. This modified technique can fully observe the process of disc staining. It also minimizes the iatrogenic injury of the intraoperative undegenerated annulus fibrosus. In addition, the learning curve is smooth and it is easy to master this technique for experienced orthopedic and neurosurgical spine specialists.

Titanium alloy has the advantages of high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility and is widely used in marine equipment, biomedicine, aerospace, and other fields. However, the application of titanium alloy in special working conditions shows some shortcomings, such as low hardness and poor wear resistance, which seriously affect the long life and safe and reliable service of the structural parts. Tribocorrosion has been one of the research hotspots in the field of tribology in recent years, and it is one of the essential factors affecting the application of passivated metal in corrosive environments. In this work, the characteristics of the marine and human environments and their critical tribological problems are analyzed, and the research connotation of tribocorrosion of titanium alloy is expounded. The research status of surface protection technology for titanium alloy in marine and biological environments is reviewed, and the development direction and trends in surface engineering of titanium alloy are prospected.

multi-objective optimal configuration strategy
2021
With the integration of large-scale photovoltaic systems, many uncertainties have been brought to the grid. In order to reduce the impact of the photovoltaic system on the grid, a multi-objective optimal configuration strategy for the energy storage system to discharge electricity into the grid is proposed. On the basis of the time-of-use electricity price, the total load variance and the user’s profits are taken as two objective functions. Constraints such as the maximum discharge power limit of the energy storage system are taken into account and a multi-objective optimal scheduling model for the centralized discharge of the energy storage system is established. A multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization model. The calculation results of MATLAB verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the strategy and the influence of different energy storage system capacities on the optimization results are also analyzed.

Support Loss and Q Factor Enhancement for a Rocking Mass Microgyroscope
2011
A rocking mass gyroscope (RMG) is a kind of vibrating mass gyroscope with high sensitivity, whose driving mode and sensing mode are completely uniform. MEMS RMG devices are a research hotspot now because they have the potential to be used in space applications. Support loss is the dominant energy loss mechanism influencing their high sensitivity. An accurate analytical model of support loss for RMGs is presented to enhance their Q factors. The anchor type and support loss mechanism of an RMG are analyzed. Firstly, the support loads, powers flowing into support structure, and vibration energy of an RMG are all developed. Then the analytical model of support loss for the RMG is developed, and its sensitivities to the main structural parameters are also analyzed. High-Q design guidelines for rocking mass microgyroscopes are deduced. Finally, the analytical model is validated by the experimental data and the data from the existing literature. The thicknesses of the prototypes are reduced from 240 µm to 60 µm, while Q factors increase from less than 150 to more than 800. The derived model is general and applicable to various beam resonators, providing significant insight to the design of high-Q MEMS devices.

Corrosion Behavior of Nitrided Layer of Ti6Al4V Titanium Alloy by Hollow Cathodic Plasma Source Nitriding
2023
Ti6Al4V titanium alloys, with high specific strength and good biological compatibility with the human body, are ideal materials for medical surgical implants. However, Ti6Al4V titanium alloys are prone to corrosion in the human environment, which affects the service life of implants and harms human health. In this work, hollow cathode plasm source nitriding (HCPSN) was used to generate nitrided layers on the surfaces of Ti6Al4V titanium alloys to improve their corrosion resistance. Ti6Al4V titanium alloys were nitrided in NH3 at 510 °C for 0, 1, 2, and 4 h. The microstructure and phase composition of the Ti-N nitriding layer was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This modified layer was identified to be composed of TiN, Ti2N, and α-Ti (N) phase. To study the corrosion properties of different phases, the nitriding 4 h samples were mechanically ground and polished to obtain the various surfaces of Ti2N and α-Ti (N) phases. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements were conducted in Hank’s solution to characterize the corrosion resistance of Ti-N nitriding layers in the human environment. The relationship between corrosion resistance and the microstructure of the Ti-N nitriding layer was discussed. The new Ti-N nitriding layer that can improve corrosion resistance provides a broader prospect for applying Ti6Al4V titanium alloy in the medical field.
