Quercetin nanoparticles display antitumor activity via proliferation inhibition and apoptosis induction in liver cancer cells
Quercetin is a potent cancer therapeutic agent and dietary antioxidant present in fruit and vegetables. Quercetin prevents tumor proliferation by inducing cell cycle arrest and is a well known cancer therapeutic agent and autophagy mediator. Recent studies showed that drug delivery by nanoparticles have enhanced efficacy with reduced side effects. In this regard, gold-quercetin into poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles was examined. In this study, we explored the role and possible underlying mechanisms of quercetin nanoparticle in regulation of antitumor activity in liver cancer cells. Treatment with quercetin nanoparticle effectively inhibited the liver cancer cell proliferation, cell migration and colony formation, thus suppressing liver cancer progression. Quercetin nanoparticle also upregulated apoptosis markedly. Further study suggested that quercetin nanoparticle accelerated the cleavage of caspase-9, caspase-3, and induced the up-releasing of cytochrome c (Cyto-c), contributing to apoptosis in liver cancer cells. Quercetin nanoparticles also promoted telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) inhibition through reducing AP-2β expression and decreasing its binding to hTERT promoter. In addition, quercetin nanoparticle had an inhibitory role in cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) via suppressing the NF-κB nuclear translocation and its binding to COX-2 promoter. Quercetin nanoparticle also inactivated Akt and ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Taken together, our results suggested that quercetin nanoparticle had an antitumor effect by inactivating caspase/Cyto-c pathway, suppressing AP-2β/hTERT, inhibiting NF-κB/COX-2 and impeding Akt/ERK1/2 signaling pathways. Our results provided new mechanistic basis for further investigation of quercetin nanoparticles to find potential therapeutic strategies and possible targets for liver cancer inhibition.
Genetics of Resistance to Leaf Rust in Wheat: An Overview in a Genome-Wide Level
Due to the global warming and dynamic changes in pathogenic virulence, leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina has greatly expanded its epidermic region and become a severe threat to global wheat production. Genetic bases of wheat resistance to leaf rust mainly rely on the leaf rust resistance (Lr) gene or quantitative trait locus (QLr). Although these genetic loci have been insensitively studied during the last two decades, an updated overview of Lr/QLr in a genome-wide level is urgently needed. This review summarized recent progresses of genetic studies of wheat resistance to leaf rust. Wheat germplasms with great potentials for genetic improvement in resistance to leaf rust were highlighted. Key information about the genetic loci carrying Lr/QLr was summarized. A genome-wide chromosome distribution map for all of the Lr/QLr was generated based on the released wheat reference genome. In conclusion, this review has provided valuable sources for both wheat breeders and researchers to understand the genetics of resistance to leaf rust in wheat.
The effect of telemedicine on stoma‐related complications in adults with enterostomy: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
To assess the effect of telemedicine on stoma‐related complications in adults with enterostomy, we conducted a meta‐analysis to evaluate the effects of the telemedicine group compared to the usual group. Literature searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang and VIP databases from their inception up to October 2023. Two authors independently screened and extracted data from the included and excluded literature according to predetermined criteria. Data collected were subjected to meta‐analysis using Review Manager 5.3 software. The final analysis included a total of 22 articles, encompassing 2237 patients (telemedicine group: 1125 patients, usual group: 1112 patients). The meta‐analysis results demonstrated that, compared to the usual group, the telemedicine group significantly reduced the overall occurrence of stoma‐related complications, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.22 (95% CI = 0.15–0.32, p < 0.00001). Furthermore, it resulted in a decrease in stoma complications (OR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.15–0.47, p < 0.00001) and peristomal complications (OR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.19–0.34, p < 0.00001). Therefore, the existing evidence suggests that the application of telemedicine can reduce the incidence of stoma and peristomal complications, making it a valuable clinical recommendation.
Parerythrobacter aestuarii sp. nov., Isolated from Seawater in the Tidal Region of Taizhou
A yellow, Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, and rod-shaped strain, designated as C18T, was isolated from seawater in the tidal region of Taizhou. Growth of strain C18T occurs at 20–45 °C, at pH 5.5–8.0 and with 1.0–8.0% (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain C18T shared sequence identities with the genera Erythrobacter (< 98.4%), Qipengyuania (< 98.0%), Altererythrobacter (< 96.4%), Parerythrobacter (< 96.2%), Aurantiacibacter (< 96.2%), Tsuneonella (< 96.0%), Pelagerythrobacter (< 96.0%), Alteriqipengyuania (< 95.9%), and Parapontixanthobacter (< 95.7%) type strains. While the phylogenomic tree based on single-copy orthologous clusters revealed that strain C18T was stably clustered into the genus Parerythrobacter. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values of strain C18T and Parerythrobacter type strains were 73.5–75.2% and 18.5–19.4%, respectively, which were lower than the species delineation thresholds. The sole respiratory quinones were identified as ubiquinone-10. The major fatty acids (> 10%) were C17:1ω6c and summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c). Polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, sphingoglycolipid, an unidentified phospholipid, and an unidentified aminophospholipid. Based on the genetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic results, strain C18T is concluded to represent a novel species in the genus Parerythrobacter, for which the name Parerythrobacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C18T (= KCTC 82594T = MCCC 1K05109T).
Application of direct observation of operational skills in nursing skill evaluation of pressure injury: A randomized clinical trial
This was a non‐blinded, single‐centre, randomized, controlled clinical trial that compared the effectiveness of direct observation of procedural skills (DOPSs)with traditional assessment methods in pressure injury (PI) care skills. The study population included 82 nursing professionals randomly assigned to the study group (n = 41) and the control group (n = 41). Both groups of nurses underwent a 6‐month training in PI care skills and were subsequently evaluated. The main outcome variables were the PI skill operation scores and theoretical scores. Secondary outcome variables included satisfaction and critical thinking abilities. Independent sample t‐tests and chi‐square tests were used to assess differences between the two groups of nurses. The results showed no statistically significant difference in PI skill operation scores between the two groups of nurses (p > 0.05). When comparing the PI theoretical scores, the study group scored higher than the control group, and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). In terms of satisfaction assessment, the study group and the control group showed differences in improving self‐directed learning, enhancing communication skills with patients, improving learning outcomes and increasing flexibility in clinical application (p < 0.05). When comparing critical thinking abilities between the two groups of nurses, there was no statistically significant difference at the beginning of the training, but after 3 months following the training, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.01).The results indicated that the DOPS was effective in improving PI theoretical scores, increasing nurse satisfaction with the training and enhancing critical thinking abilities among nurses.
Evaluation of the correlation between sleep quality and work engagement among nurses in Shanghai during the post‐epidemic era
Aim To examine the status quo and influencing factors of sleep quality and work engagement of nurses participating in COVID‐19 during the post‐epidemic era and to study the relationship between them. Design We conducted a cross‐sectional survey and correlational and predictive logic to determine the association between sleep quality and work engagement among nurses in Shanghai during the post‐epidemic era. Methods This design involved 1060 frontline nurses in Shanghai. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale‐9 scales were used for data collection. Results This study found that the sleep quality of frontline nurses was impaired and the nurses with poor sleep accounted for 48.20% during the post‐epidemic era. The work engagement of frontline nurses was at the medium level. Factors affecting nurses' sleep quality were the number of nurse night shifts, family support and nurse health. The factors affecting the nurse work engagement were monthly income, profession title, family support and self‐health status. There was a positive correlation between nurses' sleep quality and work engagement.
Resistance of Creeping Bentgrass to Biotic and Abiotic Stresses: A Model System for Grass Stress Biology
Agrostis stolonifera L., commonly known as creeping bentgrass, is an important cool-season turfgrass used in landscaping and sports fields. However, creeping bentgrass is prone to various diseases, including dollar spot, brown patch, and bacterial yellowing, during its maintenance, leading to significant degradation in turf quality, esthetics, and greening functions, resulting in substantial losses in turfgrass production and management. On the other hand, extreme environmental conditions such as high temperatures, drought, and salinity have also caused a decline in the quality of creeping bentgrass. Moreover, creeping bentgrass has a moderately sized genome and is easy to genetically transform, making it an ideal model system for studying grass stress biology. This article provides an overview of the major diseases and stressors in the management of creeping bentgrass and proposes future research directions for the disease resistance and stress tolerance of creeping bentgrass.
Twisting, untwisting, and retwisting of elastic Co-based nanohelices
The reversible transformation of a nanohelix is one of the most exquisite and important phenomena in nature. However, nanomaterials usually fail to twist into helical crystals. Considering the irreversibility of the previously studied twisting forces, the reverse process (untwisting) is more difficult to achieve, let alone the retwisting of the untwisted crystalline nanohelices. Herein, we report a new reciprocal effect between molecular geometry and crystal structure which triggers a twisting-untwisting-retwisting cycle for tri-cobalt salicylate hydroxide hexahydrate. The twisting force stems from competition between the condensation reaction and stacking process, different from the previously reported twisting mechanisms. The resulting distinct nanohelices give rise to unusual structure elasticity, as reflected in the reversible change of crystal lattice parameters and the mutual transformation between the nanowires and nanohelices. This study proposes a fresh concept for designing reversible processes and brings a new perspective in crystallography. Age-related cerebral changes during different n-back tasks: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study
The n-back task is a widely used paradigm to assess working memory and is commonly applied in research on age-related cognitive decline. However, studies utilizing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore this area are limited. This study aims to investigate age-related differences in brain activation during the n-back task using fNIRS. fNIRS data were collected from 18 elderly and 19 young participants while performing different n-back tasks. Brain activation patterns and peripheral performance were compared between the two groups. Significant differences in brain activation patterns were observed between elderly and young participants. Under the 3-back condition, the older group exhibited reduced activation in brain regions adjacent to prefrontal cognitive areas compared to the younger group. Additionally, the older group's performance plateaued at the 2-back level, along with a decline in prefrontal activation. These findings may suggest potential markers for cognitive decline, providing a new target for future screening.
Self-management in patients with diabetic foot ulcer: a concept analysis
NOABSTRACTThis paper presents an analysis of the concept of patient outcomes.The present study conducted searches on various databases, including Wanfang, Sinomed, CNKI, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Ovid. The paper followed the Walker and Avant concept-analysis approach.Initially, 899 pieces of literature were identified through the search process, and after screening, 41 of them were ultimately included in the analysis. The identified attributes of the concept included (1) capability, (2) decision making, and (3) action. These antecedents were shaped by factors such as illness perception, self-efficacy, and family and social. The consequences included (1) physiological effects, (2) psychological effects, and (3) social influence.The concept analysis of self-management in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) not only aids in clinical practice and supports interventions, but also contributes to the development of self-management theory. The common goal of clinical medical staff is to assist DFU patients in improving cognitive ability, making correct self-management decisions, and enhancing self-management behavior.
