ATP Binding Cassette Transporter, Sub-Family B - drug effects

Many peptides and transmitters found within the brain also have peripheral sites of action. We now demonstrate that the brain releases functionally active neurotransmitters/neuromodulators directly from the brain into the blood through a saturable P-glycoprotein (Pgp) transport system. Downregulating Pgp1 expression with antisense reduced the brain-to-blood transport of morphine, β-endorphin and other opioids. Lowering Pgp expression significantly enhanced systemic morphine analgesia and prevented tolerance, but diminished the analgesic activity of centrally administered morphine, implying that supraspinal analgesia resulted from a combination of central and peripheral mechanisms activated by morphine transported from the brain to the blood. Similarly, mice with a disruption of the Mdr1a gene were more sensitive to systemic morphine and less sensitive to morphine given centrally. This ability of the Pgp transport system to pump functionally active compounds from the brain to periphery defines a potentially important mechanism for the central nervous system to modulate peripheral systems.

Terrorism Can Stop the Supply Chain Dead
2010
On 9/11, New York City was hermetically sealed. Trucks bound for delivery were stuck inside and outside of the city until the travel ban was lifted by mid-afternoon. Across the country in Mountain View, CA, Mark Nelson, senior director, communications at Savi, remembered that it was spooky how quiet it was as he passed Moffitt Field in the Silicon Valley every day for the week post-9/11 that air traffic was halted, bringing international trade with the US to a near standstill. Savi and other manufacturers in this sector can't stop a terrorist intent on causing mass destruction that raises havoc with international commerce, not to mention killing people. But Nelson said real-time tracking and management solutions not only promote supply chain efficiency, but help to reduce the carbon footprint.

2010
On February 17, states nationwide and their departments of transportation, cities and regions are eagerly, perhaps anxiously, awaiting the announcement of the winners of $1.5 billion in so-called TIGER grants; short for the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Discretionary Grant Program. Over 50 projects have been identified as innovative under the TIGER grant criteria. On the other hand, since 2009, the federal Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy been dispersing $16.8 billion for programs and initiatives that will \"green\" the nation's vehicles -- both private and public sector -- to reduce our dependence on petroleum and help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Tech is the Tool to Going Green
2010
There's a technology revolution taking place with far-reaching implications for energy savings and the environment, and it's being led by some of the US' biggest global transportation companies, big-name retailers, US Army researchers, and transportation industry trade associations. From networked vehicles to smart warehouses, to vehicle-to-roadside wireless communication and satellite tracking of containers, technology is turning out to be the hero for global commerce, corporate bottom lines, and the environment. Following are examples of technologies that were developed to promote global supply chain efficiency, but also happen to assist the climate: 1. compliance and security software, 2. logistics technology, and 3. automated shipping processes.

Winning numbers: ISO 9000 and TC-176 meet Y2K
1999
ISO 9000 is one of the most popular standards the International Organization for Standardization has ever published. TC-176 is the ISO's Technical Committee that is actively working on revising the ISO 9000 international quality-assurance standard for publication in the year 2000. Not everyone is pleased with the direction TC-176 is taking. A few ways to think of the ISO 9000 setup as a basis to improve internal communication and meet the year 2000 revisions include: 1. ISO 9000 as an interpersonal communication tool, 2. ISO 9000 as a team-building tool for information flow, 3. ISO 9000 as an information-sharing tool, 4. ISO 9000 as a basis for monitoring information flow, 5. ISO 9000 as a training tool for information-management skills, and 6. ISO 9000 as a basis for continued information management.
