Gender Inequality in the Artificial Intelligence Era
This paper investigates gender inequality' in the Artificial intelligence (Al) era. Gender equality' is one of the main goals of SDGs, which for years all the world countries have been striving to achieve, either by structurally and socially changing the domestic society or by helping other countries that suffer from this disease of inequality. While countries are working on the problem of inequality, artificial intelligence has been introduced to the world. Scholars have started to investigate the possible effect of Al on improving or even dis-improving equality. Due to the novelty of the AI research area, there aren't quantitative variables that capture that phenomenon. Therefore, most ot the studies rely on the theoretical part of the story without any emphasis on the empirical side. Subsequently, in investigating the effect of AI on gender inequality, several studies explain the theoretical part only. The study will contribute to the existing body of literature by exploring the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on gender inequality using theoretical and empirical approaches. To address the research question, the study retrieves the Gender Inequality' Index (GII) from the United Nations Developmental Program (UNDP), and the number of jobs requiring Al knowledge that is demanded yearly by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). By applying the panel data approach, the study finds that AI does decrease gender inequality, as well as the two variables have a long-run co-integration association.
Gender Bias in Translation
When comparing an original text to its translation, semantic differ- ences may become apparent. This is due to the fact that translations are a human product and can vary depending on the translator. The manipulation school refers to ways of adjusting or modifying a source text, consciously or unconsciously, by the translator so as to make it acceptable and correspond- ing to his own ideology. This paper investigates essential question regarding translation and translator's ideology from a translation studies perspective. It discusses how much the translation can be manipulated by translator's ideology. The main interest is in how ideology, specifically \"gender\", is conveyed and presented textually in translation. The study adopts Hermeneutic theory to understand, analyze, and compare the source text with the target text. Out of the various translations of the Shakespearian play \"The Taming of the Shrew\", the study compares a translation produced by Dr. Saheer El-Kalamawi to the transla- tion that is produced by Dr. Mohamed Enani in order to illustrate how gen- der can affect the product of the translation process. Being a female or a male can affect the process of translation. Alt- hough translation has been described as a cross-cultural transfer, it is im- portant to note that this transfer implies an ideological transfer as well, if ideology is understood in its broad sense, i.e., as the standard set of values, ideas and beliefs that govern a community, and consequently, a translator must possess in-depth knowledge of the ideas, beliefs, and values that con- nect to the languages being translated. This study intends to illustrate to what extent ideological considerations play a role when the translation is produced by a female translator and how far it differs from a translation produced by a male translator.
Questioning Postgenderism in AI Scripted Plays of the THEaiTRE Project
This paper combines the accentuated reconfiguration of gender and the emergence of artificial intelligence agency through the investigation of two AI scripted plays that belong to the THEaiTRE project. The two plays, predominantly composed by Theatrobot 1.0 & 2.0, an AI tool, foreground human robot interaction (HRI). The study proposes that the AI era considers Postgenderism as the bylaw of the AI era. In the name of gender equality, Postgenderism advocates the elimination of gender as a sociocultural descriptor through the intensified immersion in practices and routes of technoscience. Although trajectories like feminization and neutralization of AI gender are activated to withstand current gender bias, they themselves are seen as part of the Postgenderist discourse. Both plays under scrutiny emphasize the dissolution of gender showing slight instances of gender bias, yet immense dissemination of Postgenderism. The march towards a Postgenderist society takes the ideation of the cyborg citizen (Gray 2001) steps forward through the realization of Posthumanist superhumans.
A Feminist Stylistic Analysis of Katherine Mansfield's \Miss Brill\
There has always been a belief that women in general are treated oppressively, viewed as inferior to men and subject to personal and institutional discrimination. Since literature reflects the way people think and shows the relationship between linguistic choices and socially construed meanings, this paper tackles Katherine Mansfield's \"Miss Brill\" through a feminist stylistic approach to find out how female characters are represented. It also aims to explore whether the writer of the text under investigation reinforces or challenges the stereotypical image of women by viewing them as inferior or equal to men. Conducting a feminist stylistic analysis, by utilizing Sara Mills' (1995) model of analysis involves the employment of a three-tiered level of analysis i.e. the level of the word, the level of the clause and the level of discourse. From the analysis of the short story under investigation, it has been concluded that the way women are represented is socially influenced by the prevailing held beliefs that women are passive, submissive, dependent on men, inferior to and unequal to men.
C' mon! it's Just a Joke!
Humour is usually investigated in similarity to racism or sexism, but not quite as much about superiority. The present work intends to investigate prejudice as enacted in humor. More specifically, it aims to unravel the way one facet of prejudice, namely superiority, plays itself out in the jokes aimed at a given social group in Algeria, in this case, the people of Mascara (a northwestern Algerian city). To this end, twenty jokes were collected from an Algerian blog to carry out the analysis. A meta-discourse analysis and concepts from the superiority theory were adopted. It is argued that the underlying motive behind making those jokes is to establish superiority at the expense of the target community by poking fun at their assumed unintelligence, poor decision-making, and backwardness. The findings confirm that superiority is behind those jokes under the guise of a \"just joking\" mindset. The jokes, hence, aimed at the people of Mascara, can be categorized as prejudiced and disparaged toward them, aiming to establish superiority over them.
Womanism and Gender Issue in Alice Walker's \The Color Purple\
African-American women struggled to improve their image in patriarchal societies, where the most severe forms of psychological and sexual violence were practiced on them, despite their effective contribution to the society. This authoritarian culture failed to acknowledge women's basic role in all aspects of life and also led them being deprived of earning or inheriting income and property. Throughout history, men have enjoyed the majority of power and viewed women as a private property. Few studies have addressed the novel \"The Colour Purple\" through the lens of womanism and gender issues. Instead, most research works have concentrated on resistance to sexual assault, and cultural identity. This study seeks to critically analyze the gender dynamics in \"The Colour Purple\" from a womanist perspective, and explore how these issues can challenge and potentially undermine established gender norms in society. The research concluded that Walker used the term womanism to inspire black women and provide them with positive role models. From the writer's point of view, the meaning of Womanism is self-reliance, promoting equality, and resisting oppression on the basis of ethnicity, culture, or class. Also through this novel, the author wanted to prove that women are capable of creating cultural platforms based on shared experiences to improve the image of woman and lift them out of the oppression of male society.
