Channel 2's high-profile layoffs are another sign of the times in mass media
\"We're not unique in this,\" [Joe Ahern] said Tuesday, after what he described as \"a long hard day\" executing the layoffs on Monday. \"The economic conditions are awful. ...We're in an economic environment where it just demands close scrutiny.\" \"We live in really tight times,\" said Bruce DuMont, founder and president of the Museum of Broadcast Communications. \"Primarily, it's the economy, but there's also high expectations for stations to deliver.\" \"I can't speak for other stations,\" Ahern said, and other station heads declined to comment. But it seems clear that the days Ahern could drive up salaries across town by boasting of \"an open checkbook\" are over - at least for now.

Taoiseach's tribunal action
in
Ahern, Joe
2008
Madam, - The Taoiseach's legal action against the Mahon tribunal highlights a grave weakness in our parliament. Dail procedures allow opposition parties very limited scope to tease out statements made by ministers. The capacity of the opposition to question the Taoiseach has been further reduced by rules which allow him to confine himself to one or two appearances in the Dail chamber each week during those very short periods when the Dail is actually in session.

Fowler, Carol

Unexpected was the announcement that WGN-Ch. 9 news director Carol Fowler is replacing him. Fowler's bosses at Channel 9, as well as Dennis FitzSimons, Tribune Co. president and chief operating officer, tried to convince her to stay Thursday, and she said she was not looking to leave Channel 9. She is credited with creating the station's first dedicated investigative unit and maintaining the station's position in a tough time slot. She is the second top city newsroom executive wooed for the job by [Joe Ahern], who had already poached other employees from his former station, WLS-Ch. 7. Earlier this month, Ahern made a run at WMAQ- Ch. 5 news boss Frank Whittaker, but at the 11th hour he decided to stay put.
