No boys hockey team for Sonics
\"A lot of the younger boys just don't make up the diverse size of players you need to make up a team,\" [Byron Barton] said. \"I don't know why there's no interest from the older boys ... I can't speak on behalf of students.\" \"Every high school should have a hockey team along with a football team, basketball team and other kinds of teams,\" she said. \"Once it's gone, will it come back is the question. High school hockey has been in Sussex for many years, it's sad that there won't be any this year.\" \"Hopefully we'll be able to make a team next year. Hopefully this isn't something that will last but we'll just have to play it by the season. If the interest is there next year, then we'll have a season but if not then who knows what will happen,\" Barton said.

More books to try this winter
\"Banjo Granny\" by Sarah Martin Busse and Jacqueline Briggs Martin. Pennsylvania resident Barry Root illustrated this picture book, which takes preschool to 8-year-old readers on a great romp with a banjo playing country Granny who travels to get to her music-loving baby grandson in the city. \"Nate the Great Talks Turkey\" by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Mitchel Sharmat. This book will introduce kids to a character they will meet during the 2007 Get A Clue! Summer Reading Club. This is appropriate to read to ages 4 to 10 and is good for self-readers ages 8 to 12. \"Bread and Roses, Too\" by Katherine Paterson. Crafted by the author of \"Bridge to Terabithia\" and \"The Great Gilly Hopkins,\" this historical fiction transports readers, ages 10 to 14, to the 1912 Bread and Roses strike in the mills of Lawrenceville, Mass.
Varsity hoops teams look to continue strong play
\"I'd say this is the best team we've had in four or five years,\" said coach Byron Barton. And he is qualified to make the call: Barton has coached basketball at Sussex Regional High for the past 16 years. The girl's team has four senior players, with Brittany Mallory the leading scorer. \"She's averaging about 20 points a game right now,\" said [Mike Maxwell]. \"Our second highest scorer would be Madeline Belding, who is in Grade 11. \"Larissa Verhoeven is a really strong rebounding and defensive player,\" said Maxwell. \"Larissa and Brittany are co-captains, and both are in Grade 12.\"
Sonics coach honoured
Some highlights from his coaching career at Sussex include claiming his first NBIAA Provincial AA Championship title in 1997, making it to the NBIAA Final 12 six consecutive years (2000-2005), regaining the AA title in 2001 and claiming the AAA title in 2003. His Sonics team has also won many tournaments over the years, including two times at the Moncton Hoop Classic. Some of his fondest memories of coaching basketball are the road trips, over-nighters in classrooms, \"dive\" hotels and alumni games at Christmas time. He pays tribute to Gale Jeffrey and all of his assistant coaches at SRHS, as well as all the other coaches and mentors he's learned from along the way.
Provincial mid-amateur tourney starts Wednesday; Sussex Golf & Curling Club
The winners were the team of Mike and Anne Swift, Candace Jeffrey and Byron Barton. There were prizes for everyone. Walter Riedle celebrated his 39th birthday and holding at the dinner. Ken played dinner for the crowd. The next event is in August. The Nike Golf New Brunswick Mid-Amateur Championship runs June 25-27. There are 54 golfers (25 years and older) entered from every part of the province. Club pro Brent McKay needs some volunteers to help with starting, scoring, and forecaddies. If you have the time please call him at the pro shop, 433-4951. The course will reopen for play around noon each day. If you would like to watch some good golf, come to the course between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The kitchen will be open at 6:30 a.m. each morning.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS
[Diane Siebert] clearly feels differently. ''Truck Song'' is her hymn to trucks and the men who drive them, aimed at 2-to-5 year-olds. She is preaching to the converted - I have never known a small child who didn't love trucks. The very things that put adults off - clanking speed, gaudy colors, sheer size - draw them in. There is nothing notably fresh about the author's individual lines:
