Trends in Geographic Access to Board Certified Behavior Analysts Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2018–2021

Research has documented inequities in geographic access to Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, research on their accessibility is outdated. Between July 1, 2018 and July 1, 2021 the number of BCBAs in the U.S. increased by 65%, from 27,320 to 45,103. In this study we examined trends in geographic access to BCBAs among children with ASD between 2018 and 2021. The sample included all U.S. counties in 50 states and D.C. (N = 3138). Using GIS software we examined change in county-level access to BCBAs between 2018 and 2021 and mapped ASD/BCBA ratios across all counties in both years. Study results indicate that despite modest improvements (e.g., 266 counties added BCBAs), inequitable access persists.

A Scoping Literature Review of Demand Fading

Demand fading involves the removal and gradual reintroduction of demands and has been shown to effectively reduce escape-maintained challenging behavior. However, it is currently unclear if there are common demand fading practices when demand fading is used as an initial intervention rather than as a method for schedule thinning after another intervention for escape-maintained behavior has been implemented. To address this gap in the literature, we searched APA PsycInfo for studies that included demand fading to treat escape-maintained challenging behavior that interfered with acquisition of academic or preacademic skills (
n
= 15). Across these studies, demand fading procedures were inconsistent but generally embedded in a treatment package with other interventions and resulted in socially significant reductions of challenging behavior. Common procedures were identified and implications for research are discussed.

Practical Functional Assessment and Behavioral Treatment of Challenging Behavior for Clinically Based Outpatient Services: A Consecutive Case Series Evaluation

Behavioral assessment allows a clinician to identify environmental events that are contributing to challenging behavior to inform effective treatment. Recent developments in behavioral assessment and treatment have been devoted to creating practical procedures that can be conducted by clinicians in socially relevant settings. However, the extent to which these procedural modifications affect treatment outcomes has yet to be fully explored. We conducted a consecutive case series with 13 individuals admitted to an outpatient program to address their challenging behavior. The patients experienced a behavioral package conducted in three phases (practical functional assessment [PFA], behavioral treatment, extension). Results demonstrated near elimination of challenging behavior for all patients after extending the treatment to include denials to reinforcement and instructions to complete other tasks.

Flourishing children : defining and testing indicators of positive development
\"This volume presents the results of the Flourishing Children Project. The study addressed gaps in the research on indicators of positive development of adolescents. Such indicators are essential for the balanced and scientifically sound study of adolescents. Yet measures of many aspects of flourishing are not available, and when they do exist, they are rarely measured in a developmentally appropriate manner for adolescents. In addition, they are often too long for program evaluations and surveys, have not been tested on diverse populations, nor carefully validated as predictors of positive outcomes. The Flourishing Children Project undertook the development of scales for adolescents ages 12-17 for 19 aspects of flourishing covering six domains: flourishing in school and work, personal flourishing, flourishing in relationships, relationship skills, helping others to flourish, and environmental stewardship. This volume describes the four-stage process of developing the scales, including: Reviewing the literature for extant measures for items to test and synthesizing the existing research into consensus definitions for each construct; conducting cognitive testing of items with adolescents and their parents; pilot testing the items; and conducting psychometric analyses\" -- Provided by publisher.

(1), 205–216, 2020a) conducted a review of the functional analysis literature between the years 1965 and 2016. The authors found an increasing trend in analyses replicating the components of Iwata et al. (
Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 27
, 197–209, 1982/1994a) and determined that those components have come to represent a standard format. Since the inception of the standard, other functional analysis formats (e.g., brief, latency-based, trial-based) have been developed to improve analysis efficiency and control, with most retaining fundamental components of the standard and some omitting all (e.g., interview-informed, synthesized contingency analysis; IISCA). We conducted a review of functional analyses in this two-part evaluation to determine the levels of efficiency and control afforded by functional analysis variations and formats.
