‘Like Father, Like Son’: Willy Brandt and Felipe González: Democracy, Social Democracy and Internationalism in Motion in the Late Cold War
The article sheds light on the significant and understudied bond between West German Chancellor and Nobel Peace Laureate Willy Brandt and Spanish President Felipe González. It is based on interviews with senior policy makers; archival material from the Ebert Foundation in Bonn; fresh material from Austria, Spain, Sweden, Portugal and the United States, and exclusive additional private papers. Drawing on these sources, the article identifies the three key political-intellectual pillars – democracy, social democracy and internationalism – that sustained their special ‘father–son’ relationship and discusses their shared desire to project their brand of socialism across Europe and the world. In doing so, it also sheds light on how personal guidance, assistance and exchange, linked with institutional support, contributed to the expansion of democracy and social democracy in the late Cold War.
One planet – two worlds: how long will the North-South divide endure?
Purpose This study aims to propose an approach towards reducing differences between national economies and living standards existing between the world’s wealthiest and least affluent nations. Design/methodology/approach A systemic review identifies the impeding purpose as proposed above: an entirely new initiative. Findings The efforts recommended are vital for preserving the human species and ensuring the integrity of our planet. For both the future of the human species and the planet itself, it is essential to reduce the divide between wealthy and poor. Now is the time to give force to the types of implementation necessary to meet these combined goals. Research limitations/implications This essay avoids dissecting problems of current geopolitical and ideological character. Despite their sometimes contentious nature, they are often reduced by intelligent diplomacy. Originality/value The study proposes a holistic approach to bridging the North-South divide.
Justice and Apology in the Aftermath of War and Mass Crime
West Germany’s record of dealing with National Socialism is often held up as a model to be emulated by states emerging out of war and mass crimes. This article traces the application of the German model to contemporary Serbia, as represented by the two tropes of “Nuremberg” (justice) and “Willy Brandt’s Kniefall” (apology). It argues that both events were divorced from their own historical circumstances and presented as contemporaneous elements of a model that set unrealistic normative benchmarks when applied to the Serbian national context. Placing Germany’s process of postwar memory construction in a historical and comparative light, rather than viewing it as an ideal-typical model to be emulated, provides a more productive way of analyzing the complexities of national memory processes in post-conflict states.
El Partido Socialista de Uruguay y la socialdemocracia internacional (1945–1999)
The SI is the organization that groups socialist, social democratic and labor parties from all over the world and the PSU is one of the oldest and most important socialist parties in Latin America. In order to facilitate the analysis and presentation of events that occurred over such a long period of time, the work is divided into three parts. [...]a synthesis will be made to point out some trends and offer general conclusions.
Western Politicians in the Polish Post-War Public Discourse
The aim of the article is to analyse public discourse in post-war Poland, where the images of Western politicians and their approach to Eastern countries were studied. The research assumed the hypothesis that the positive image of social democratic leaders in the Polish discourse resulted from the legitimacy needs of the authorities. The politicians Willy Brandt and Bruno Kreisky themselves played a decisive role in shaping a positive image, appreciated all over the world for the effective implementation of Ostpolitik. The qualitative method was adopted, particularly critical discourse analysis (CDA). The hypothesis concerns the relationship between the propagated images of a Western politician and the legitimacy of the communist authority. Among the images of leaders most often depicted over several decades and relating to his biographical threads, what is dominant in the Polish media coverage is that of a politician with socialist and communist Among the most frequently presented pictures of Western politicians in the Polish public sphere, five of the most important ones are that of a socialist, an anti-communist, a partner, a statesman and an architect of Ostpolitik. Western state seeking trade contacts in the East, defining the principles of political cooperation, describing the economic conditions of countries with different systems and designating and consolidating the elements that positively characterise bilateral relations, especially those related to a common tradition and culture. Reconciliation of Nations for the Survival of Humankind
The paper explores the history and the reality of reconciliation of nations, which is inevitable and vital for the survival of human kind. It first emphasizes the very need for the peace and reconciliation through three examples of national reconciliation both internal and external: reconciliation between France and Germany after the continuous war since 1813, reconciliation between Germany and Poland after the World War II, and the reconciliation between Germany and Germany, the very recent peace movement. Then the paper warns the crude reality against the pursuit of peace and reconciliation including the growing nationalistic power-politics, nuclear threat, and ecological as well as environmental complication. There is still the ardent hope, however, in transforming the national foreign policy into a world home policy.
