Under the reign of Louis XV, the cardinal of Fleury intends to pursue masonic lodges installed in the capital for rebellious activity. Between 1740 and 1747, this task returns to mister de Marville, general lieutenant of police on Paris. Thanks to the implementation of a real network of information, it becomes difficult for the freemasons to meet in any discretion. During a time, the Parisian police services manage even to slow down the expansion of the « new ideas », by preventing the advent of new lodges or by resorting to numerous arrests. However, the expected results are far from being satisfactory. In 1743, the cardinal of Fleury's death is also a real turning point. Without supports for the highest level of the State, mister de Marville finds himself forsaken in this fight against the freemasonry. In the absence of directives, he cannot prevent the lodges from growing quite freely. In 1747, his « forced » resignation puts a definitive term in the vague desires of the royal authority to control the activity of the freemasons installed in the kingdom of France.
