Labour opens inquiry into antisemitism allegations at Oxford student club
2016
A Labour party spokeswoman said the party supported an inquiry announced by Labour Students, the national students' group affiliated to the party. \"Following recent allegations of antisemitic behaviour and intimidation at Oxford University Labour Club, Labour Students have launched an immediate investigation and the Labour party welcomes and supports this action. If complaints are made about any individual member of the Labour party, the party will take robust action to deal with any antisemitic behaviour.\" Louise Ellman, vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel, said: \"I am deeply disturbed by the news that Oxford University Labour Club has decided to support Israeli Apartheid Week and by the revelations from [Alex Chalmers] about the troubling tone of the discourse in which this debate appears to have been conducted.\" She said comparisons between Israel and apartheid-era South Africa were \"a grotesque smear and the Labour party should dissociate itself from them\". The OULC executive committee said it was launching an investigation and encouraged members to come forward with information. \"We are horrified at and condemn antisemitic behaviour in all its forms,\" it said. \"The comments detailed in JSoc's statement indicate a shocking pattern of hateful and racist behaviour by some club members, and it's of the highest priority that this be dealt with swiftly and lastingly.\"

An anti-Semitism of the left
2016
Noa Lessof-Gendler, a student at Britain's Cambridge University, complained last month in Varsity, a campus newspaper, that anti-Semitism was felt \"in the word 'Zio\"' flung around in left-wing groups.\" She wrote: \"I'm Jewish, but that doesn't mean I have Palestinian blood on my hands,\" or should feel nervous \"about conversations in Hall when an Israeli speaker visits.\" [Jeremy Corbyn] is no anti-Semite. But he has called Hamas and Hezbollah agents of \"long-term peace and social justice and political justice in the whole region,\" and once invited to Parliament a Palestinian Islamist, Raed Salah, who has suggested Jews were absent from the Twin Towers on 9/11. Corbyn called him an \"honored citizen.\" The \"Corbynistas\" on British campuses extol their fight against the \"racist colonization of Palestine,\" as one Oxford student, James Elliott, has put it. Elliott was narrowly defeated last month in a bid to become youth representative on Labour's national executive committee. [Alan Johnson], writing in Fathom Journal, outlined three components to left-wing anti-Semitic anti-Zionism. First, \"the abolition of the Jewish homeland; not Palestine alongside Israel, but Palestine instead of Israel.\" Second, \"a demonizing intellectual discourse\" that holds that \"Zionism is racism\" and pursues the \"systematic Nazification of Israel.\" Third, a global social movement to \"exclude one state -- and only one state -- from the economic, cultural and educational life of humanity.\"
