In Anime’s Media Mix, Marc Steinberg convincingly shows that anime is far more than a style of Japanese animation. Engaging with film, animation, and media studies, as well as analyses of consumer culture and theories of capitalism, Steinberg offers the first sustained study of the Japanese mode of convergence that informs global media practices to this day.

Institutions around the world are fighting to improve science communication all the time. From calls for journal papers to be simplified to encouraging scientists to take more of an active role through community engagement, there is an impetus to demystify and improve public understanding and engagement with science. Technology has greatly helped expand the range of learning styles that a lecturer can call on to reach people in new ways. Social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr have expanded the reach of science communication within and across scientific disciplines and to the lay public. Here, with all the videos, interactive quizzes, and instant feedback it can be easy to overlook one of the simplest methods for communicating complex ideas: comics.

In healthcare education, it is important for nursing students to be able to reflect on their performance in high-fidelity clinical simulations in order to develop key skills. Learning Analytics (LA) offers opportunities for data-driven reflection by providing visual representations of educational experiences. While many LA tools rely on data visualisations to communicate insights, these are often difficult for students to interpret, limiting their effectiveness. Despite these challenges, there is limited research exploring alternative and potentially more accessible formats—such as data comics, a narrative visualisation technique that integrates data with the structure of traditional comic strips—to represent and communicate insights from learner data in a more engaging way. This study addresses that gap through a qualitative analysis of nursing students’ perceptions of data comics as reflective tools, focusing on: (i) support for student reflection, (ii) advantages and limitations, and (iii) concerns about their use in healthcare education. Third-year nursing students who participated in a simulation were interviewed and asked to reflect on personalised data comic prototypes generated from their multimodal data using a mix of human input and AI methods. The results indicated that while data comics present an engaging and accessible form of reflective visualisation, considerations need to be made regarding the designs to ensure that they are appropriate for the target audience and do not oversimplify the simulation experience. These findings indicate that data comics should not act as a replacement for conventional visualisations but rather serve as supplementary material to communicate contextual information or aid in interpretation of visualisations.

In recent years, medical educators have increasingly incorporated comics into their teaching to promote humanism and empathy and to encourage reflective practice. However, it remains unclear how and to what extent comics-based courses effectively address persistent challenges in medical education, such as the need for more engaging, multimodal learning strategies and the cultivation of emotional intelligence alongside clinical competencies. The aim of this study is to investigate the experiences of students who have enrolled in courses on comics and medicine during medical school. Students in North America who had taken such a course during the previous 5 years were invited to participate in an interview about their experiences. 17 students from 10 different medical schools in North America were interviewed. To explore the students’ views on the value of such courses to their medical education, we used a constructivist grounded analytic approach, employing thematic analysis to understand and interpret our interview. Students reported that comics-based courses support key aspects of their medical training that traditional pedagogical approaches may overlook, such as fostering self-reflection, enhancing empathy, and encouraging creative engagement with complex medical narratives. Moreover, comics contributed to their individual and collective professional identity formation by providing a space for introspection and shared discourse.

Japanese animation, video games, and manga have attracted fans around the world. The characters, the stories, and the sensibilities that come out of these cultural products are together called Japan Cool. This is not a sudden fad, but is rooted in manga—Japanese comics—which since the mid-1940s have developed in an exponential way. In spite of a gradual decline in readership, manga still commands over a third of the publishing output. The volume of manga works that is being produced and has been through history is enormous. There are manga publications that attract readers of all ages and genders. The diversity in content attracts readers well into adulthood. Surveys on reading practices have found that almost all Japanese people read manga or have done so at some point in their lives. The skills of reading manga are learned by readers themselves, but learned in the context of other readers and in tandem with school learning. Manga reading practices are sustained by the practices of other readers, and manga content therefore serves as a topic of conversation for both families and friends. Moreover, manga is one of the largest sources of content for media production in film, television, and video games. Manga literacy, the practices of the readers, the diversity of titles, and the sheer number of works provide the basis for the movement recognized as Japan Cool. Reading Japan Cool is directed at an audience of students of Japanese studies, discourse analysts, educators, parents, and manga readers.
