Raising language awareness to foster self-efficacy in pre-professional writers of English as a Foreign Language: a case study of Czech students of Electrical Engineering and Informatics
This case study examined Czech electrical engineering and informatics students’ English academic writing, addressing challenges in producing understandable and coherent texts for international audiences. Using a mixed-methods approach, which included textual analysis of essays, student writing profiles, and pre/post-course questionnaires, we analysed students’ self-efficacy expressed in writing confidence, comfort, and competence. A language awareness intervention, focusing on comparative English-Czech writing conventions and domain-specific text analysis in a collaborative learning environment, aimed to enhance the students’ self-efficacy. Findings demonstrated an increase in students’ self-reported confidence and comfort. While grammatical accuracy is often present, structural and content-level challenges persist and are identified by the students. The intervention demonstrates the value of focused engagement with language use in a collaborative learning environment, informing pedagogical practices to improve academic writing instruction for STEM students and foster their professional development.
Personality and Word Use: Study on Czech Language and the Big Five
The study is a follow-up to three published anglophone researches examining the relation between the use of linguistic categories and personality characteristics as outlined in the Big Five model, with the purpose of replicating these and elaborating for the Czech language. The comparative research study in Czech focuses on analysis of both grammatical and semantic variables in six types of text (written and oral), produced by N = 200 participants. Within the study, there were six confirmed relations, however, these appear only in certain types of text. The results show not only an essential role of the text register, but they also allow us to evaluate the universality of findings of studies in English in comparison with other, especially Slavic, languages.
Building Czech textbook corpora (UcebKo) for word-formation research of Czech as a second language
This work-in-progress paper presents a specialized language corpus UcebKo built from textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The corpus integrates three subcorpora (UcebKo-A2, UcebKo-B1, and UcebKo-B2) which allow research of Czech as a second/foreign language at chosen language levels (A2, B1, and B2). In this case, the research is focused on word-formation, where the first results, i.e., mapping of derived words denoting persons, illustrate the approach and methodology used.
