Remarks By President Bush and Senator Danforth at Special Envoy Announcement
THE PRESIDENT: I'm pleased to announce today my appointment of [JOHN DANFORTH] of Missouri as America's envoy for peace in the Sudan. It's my honor to welcome the former United States Senator, his wife Sally, and distinguished guests here to the Rose Garden for this important announcement. The civil war in Sudan has lasted at least 18 years, and it has caused immense human misery -- the death of two million people, bombing and displacement of civilians, trading in human beings as slaves. In appointing me special envoy, President [Bush] has asked me to determine if there is anything useful the U.S. can do to help end the misery in Sudan, in addition to what we are already doing on the humanitarian side. Even to ask that question is a powerful statement by the President of the values of our country. Second, the will of combatants to have peace will be gauged not by their words, but by their actions. Third, the job of a special envoy is to further peace. I am prepared to deal constructively with both sides of the conflict, the government of Sudan and the SPLA. Fourth, the effectiveness of America's efforts for peace in Sudan will depend on our communication and cooperation with other interested countries, including the European Union and countries neighboring Sudan, especially Egypt and Kenya.
Danforth warns that crisis in Islamic world will spread beyond Iraq
[John Danforth], a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, also said religious leaders must play a bigger role in ending a war that is rooted deeply in religion. He added that he would not endorse a pullout of U.S. troops because of the power vacuum it would create. \"I think that we've got a sectarian war going on in Iraq and that it's very, very dangerous. For 1,400 years, the Sunnis and the Shiites have been fighting each other, and they hate each other. And this is something that now is totally breaking out in Iraq and it relates to the Islamic world beyond the borders of Iraq,\" said Danforth. As an Episcopal priest as well as a politician with global experience, Danforth speaks with authority about both religion and public policy. His assessment of Iraq was similar to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's assertion last week that Iraq is in danger of sliding into full-scale civil war.

POLITICS: FOREIGN OBSERVERS FLY INTO SUDAN TO MONITOR CEASE-FIRE
NAIROBI, Apr. 5 (IPS) -- A team of international observers has flown into Sudan's Nuba Mountains to monitor a cease-fire agreement between Sudan's government and southern rebels. The Nuba region of central Sudan has been devastated by government bombing since civil war broke out in Sudan in 1983. Southern rebels are fighting for greater independence from the Islamic military regime in the capital, Khartoum. Sources on the ground say the Nuba Mountains cease-fire has captured the popular imagination of Sudan's war-weary population. Other regions are hopeful that cease-fires can now be brokered in their areas.
