'Reno' cops guilty of excessive farce
by
Seymour, Gene
in
Dangle, Jim
2007
His low-wattage deputies include Travis Junior (the movie's director, Robert Ben Garant), who compares Reno, Nev., to Mayberry - - only with more prostitution and crystal meth. Trudy Wiegel (Kerri Kenney-Silver) believes [Jim Dangle] has the hots for her, and Raineesha Williams (Niecy Nash) would rather apply nail lacquer than clean her weapon. Clementine Johnson (Wendy McLendon-Covey), buff S. Jones (Cedric Yarbrough), clueless James Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui) and sexually ambiguous Cherisa Kimball (Mary Birdsong) round out this odd squad.

Reno 911!: Miami

Dangle, Jim
2007
Lieutenant Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is in charge. A vision in short-shorts, with highlights and moustache, he might be mistaken for an extra from a 70s adult film.

IMPULSE! ALL STARS, Handcuffed by off-the-cuff wit?
in
Dangle, Jim
2007
The wacky Comedy Central series \"Reno 911!\" comes to the big screen in \"Reno 911!: Miami\", where the motley team of deputies tries to secure the Florida city. We asked the Review Crew if the world is ready for Lt. Jim Dangle and his gang. The thought of bringing \"Reno 911!\" from TV to film was as disastrous as the movie itself. After the Miami police are quarantined in a convention that the Reno team had been ousted from, Reno's Rejects are the only option to keep the city from chaos. This created a recipe of worst-case scenarios that lacked humor and interest. Though it tried (I guess), it didn't offer the comedy relief you find even on mediocre TV shows I'm most disappointed that The Rock marred his credibility by appearing in this movie. Shame on you, Rock. I've never watched \"Reno 911!\" on TV, but I have seen all 30 or so \"Police Academy\" movies. I expected \"Reno 911!: Miami\" to be as pathetic as \"Police Academy 6,\" but I couldn't have been more wrong. This clever movie is the good kind of dumb. Whether chasing chickens rolling whales or ramming squad cars into each other repeatedly, the bumbling cops are a riot. The gratuitously gross humor isn't necessary, but that comes along with converting a TV show into a movie. Oscar-worthy? No. Laugh-fest? Yes.

Put your hands up ... and drop your pants

2004
Homophobic, racist weirdos don't get a lot of air time, for good reason. But taking the mickey out of their views has got to be worth 20 minutes. It's the staff of the Washoe County Sheriff's department at work in the refreshingly politically incorrect Reno 911! (Monday nights on TV One). There isn't a plot as such - we just follow along as the cops attend domestic violence incidents, pull over speedsters, and all the other routine jobs cops in Reno do. While these are stupidly funny, it's the personal insights of the enforcers that are most entertaining. The officers are all weirdos, especially Deputy Trudy Wiegel. She's a manic-depressive, racist anti-Catholic, and fancies having [Jim Dangle]'s baby. She describes their special arrangement as being like a brother and sister - who have sex.

Reality cop show spoof
in
Dangle, Jim
2004
Thomas Lennon, executive producer and co-creator, steals the show as Lt Jim Dangle. He did work out before donning Dangle's micro- shorts: \"I guess I did go to the gym somewhat, but I was blessed with okay legs to begin with. The officers include Lt Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon), a gay cop who wears tiny shorts, who has been known to seduce suspects; deputy Trudy Wiegel, an antisocial, manic-depressive racist who thinks every man, including Dangle, wants her; and deputy Clementine Johnson (Wendi McLendon-Covey), a former topless showgirl/ magician's assistant who was once crowned Miss Teen Whiskey Pete's.

'Reno 911!: Miami' arrestingly absurd
2007
Once in Miami, however, the fate of the nation falls into the Reno cops' fumbling hands: Criminals capture all the convention- attending cops - apparently every other officer in the United States - due to some sort of poison that forces them to remain inside the resort. It's up to [Jim Dangle] and his charges to not only maintain order on the streets and waterways of Miami, but round up the culprits and rescue their brothers in blue. Danny DeVito and the Rock pop up in brief cameos, but by and large the film is free of celebrity power. The real stars are the little-known writers/actors. [Thomas Lennon] co-wrote the film with castmates Ben Garant, who also directs, and Kerri Kenney. As a result, the setups and gags feel more organic and well calibrated than Hollywood's usual prefabricated humor. Much of the humor in \"Reno 911!: Miami\" centers on nuance and tone rather than canned one- liners. Reno 911!: Miami (***) - Rated R for sexual content, nudity, crude humor, language and drug use. Thomas Lennon stars. Ben Garant directs. 84 minutes. Playing at Park Place, El Con, Century Park, Foothills, DeAnza, Desert Sky and Uptown.

Reno 911! season opener memorable
2004
Reno 911! is a raucous send-up of COPS, but even though it looks like COPS, sounds like COPS and plays like COPS, the program it most resembles is The Office. A truly scary cameo by Kenny Rogers, a sight gag involving a sick dog, some clever riffs on race, loyalty, neediness and morality -- \"That was a very hip-hop apology, it's like, 'You got to accept my apology cause I'm street,' you see how you did that?\" -- combined with a genuine feel for the outlandish personalities one finds in the everyday workplace, all add up to make Reno 911!'s season opener a memorable half-hour of television. Humour is subjective: The funniest bits in tonight's opener to these eyes come from Shazia Mirza, a Muslim stand-up comedienne from the U.K., who gets the crowd going with her take on racial profiling (\"My name is Shazia Mirza, or at least that's what it says on my pilot's licence\") and being a Muslim woman in a modern-day world.

Cultural learnings for make benefit morons
2007
It's no Borat, but Reno 911!: Miami shares with the comic milestone from Sacha Baron Cohen a comic formula based on inappropriate behaviour. For the Kazakhstani newsman, the maladroit moments had a cultural context -- after all, Borat didn't come from \"here.\" The men and women of the Reno sheriff's department don't have that excuse. They're all American citizens, which means the only rationale for their bad behaviour is stupidity -- and in Reno 911!: Miami, the ragtag group of law-enforcement officers are intellectually duller than a pair of plastic scissors. To [Robert Ben Garant]'s credit, Reno 911!: Miami may feel like a long version of the TV show, but there is enough material to carry a whole feature film -- thanks in large part to [Jim Dangle]'s short shorts and Trudy Wiegel (Kerri [Kerry Kenney-Silver]), a woman who wears underwear under her swimsuit and dreams of getting it on with Dangle.

THE NEW 'ODD COUPLE'
2015
The true Odd Couple relationship in [Thomas Lennon]'s life is with his writing partner of more than 20 years, Robert Ben Garant, co-creator of \"Reno 911!\" (he also played Travis Junior in the series). The two have been, so to speak, one of the power couples of Hollywood: among their other credits are the shows \"The State\" and \"Viva Variety,\" and their screenplays for the \"Night at the Museum\" films. \"There's one weird one people quote to me a lot,\" he recalls. \"I was wearing these brand-new white ostrich cowboy boots, and I started doing this weird little dance in the parking lot, and I said, 'I'm just goofin'. I'm just new-boot goofin' .' It was the most offhanded thing. And now people say 'new-boot goofin' ' to me like some sort of mantra. I got this email from Ben Stiller and the whole subject of the email was, 'New-boot goofin.' ' Haha.\" Partly, that line was funny because of the character: Lt. [Jim Dangle], the nearly-unstereotypical gay cop (the short-shorts, now a popular Halloween costume, are the giveaway). Which brings us back to \"The Odd Couple,\" whose premise of two guys sharing an apartment has always raised eyebrows. \"Homosexuals will enjoy it -- for obvious reasons,\" wrote The New York Times in its 1965 review of the play. In the new version, the subject is for the first time mentioned directly. \"He seems a little gay,\" [Wendell Pierce]'s Teddy says of Lennon's [Felix Unger]. \"No, he seems incredibly gay,\" [Matthew Perry]'s Oscar corrects him.
