'Inherent weaknesses' It also expressed concern about \"inherent weaknesses\" in the system which gave rise to staffing demands. [Alan Dukes] said he regretted the department did \"not seem to have even attempted any proper analysis\" of his case and said the comments betrayed \"a serious lack of understanding of the issues involved\". It was subsequently decided by the Cabinet that the three ministers should meet \"to consider the basis for a settlement\" in relation to staffing and overtime. Before the year's end, 184 new posts in the service were sanctioned by the government.

2016
The memo, dated April 16th, 1985, was based on the findings of an interdepartmental committee. It said since social welfare recipients required cash to provide for day-to-day essentials, and \"since the banks are not interested in mere encashment\" of social welfare cheques, there was no viable alternative to providing cash social welfare payments through the post office.

Government nationalised Anglo but didn't trust new institution - Dukes
by
Sheehy, Clodagh
in
Dukes, Alan
2015
He told the Banking Inquiry it seems that once the Department \"conceived the perfectly valid strategy\" of nationalising the bank, it then \"decided not to have any trust in the institution it had set up\". Mr [Alan Dukes] added that the relationship between the nationalised bank and the most senior officials in the Department of Finance was \"unnecessarily complicated by the mistaken belief\" that it should be run as a \"subsidiary\" of the Department.

by
McGee, Harry

Dukes, Alan
2015
In the wake of pressure from the Opposition, Government chief whip Paul Kehoe agreed to set aside at least 10 hours for debate on the inquiry into the controversial sale of Siteserv to a company controlled by businessman Denis O'Brien. Mr [Alan Dukes] said Richard Woodhouse, who managed Mr O'Brien's dealings with IBRC, attended the board meeting on March 15th, 2012 at which the sale of Siteserv was agreed but was excluded from the sale process at all stages, as the principal bidder was a company associated with Mr O'Brien. Several opposition politicians said there were inconsistencies between the minutes and what Mr Dukes previously stated.

Dukes: Murphy 'plain wrong'
2015
Mr [Alan Dukes]' intervention comes as a political storm intensified over a High Court order restricting media reporting of Mr O'Brien's dealings with the IBRC. The controversy has escalated as politicians from across the Dail expressed concerns that the media's right to report on Oireachtas proceedings was being threatened. The issue - which is being called a \"constitutional crisis\"- will be raised in the High Court on Tuesday when RTE and the Irish Times seek to clarify the order.

PAC told Siteserv deal did not cause IBRC liquidation
2015
In a detailed 21-page note on its relationship with the IBRC, the department set out its actions after concerns were raised over the Siteserv deal, which saw the taxpayer suffer a EUR 100m loss. The department said: \"The decision to pursue the promissory note transaction, liquidate IBRC and appoint special liquidators was not the result of any concerns regarding individual IBRC transactions or the relationship with management.\" The document states that Finance Minister Michael Noonan and his officials' concerns around the deal centred around why higher bids were not accepted; why shareholders got EUR 5m; and why Siteserv was allowed run the sales process. Siteserv was sold to Denis O'Brien's Millington by the IBRC at a loss to the taxpayer of over EUR 100m.

Government growth forecasts 'overly optimistic', warns Dukes
2014
Yesterday's seminar was organised to assess the European Commission's economic recommendations for Ireland, issued last week as part of the European Semester, the EU's new regime of policy co-ordination and surveillance. Despite highlighting concerns about healthcare costs, excessive legal fees and non-performing SME loans, the commission delivered a relatively upbeat assessment of the health of the Irish economy. However, Mr [Alan Dukes] said the Semester process was underpinned by Eurostat's annual growth survey which took little or no account of the monetary policy being pursued by the European Central Bank, which he maintained was inimical to economic growth. \"The erroneous mindset that held that the crisis in the euro zone is at root a fiscal crisis continues to reign and that, in my view, is to everyone's detriment.

A sense of nostalgia for things that are still going on

Dukes, Alan

Nigella Lawson Hicienda erciam destrum rem in est, il modia quatur aut fugit aturnnkkl They're loving this, the whole lot of them. And looking at lreland In Crisis, you could see the attraction of it for a certain type of person -- it's just so easy. There was Alan Dukes, one of the \"big beasts\", as they say (they love the \"big beasts\"), a man who is revered by his contemporaries for the enormity of his intellect, and Dukes was talking about [Enda]'s poor election campaign, \"Once you're explaining, you're losing\", he quipped. By sheer coincidence I happened to be reading about the magnificent The Larry Sanders Show, whose creator Garry Shandling died recently, and I was reminded of a line spoken by [Larry]'s producer Artie, played by Rip Torn -- he is talking about a certain brand of excellent Scotch, and he puts it like this: \"It's Scotch whisky...Glenlivet, single malt. When you die, you'll go to heaven, say hello to God; and when God says hello to you, this is what you'll smell on his breath\".
