Founded in 1968, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) is the Latino equivalent to the NAACP: a source of legal defense for the Latina/o community in cases centered on education, state immigration laws, redistricting, employment discrimination, and immigrant rights. Unlike the NAACP, however, MALDEF was founded by Mexican American activists in conjunction with the larger philanthropic structure of the Ford Foundation—a relationship that has opened it up to controversy and criticism.In the first book to examine this little-known but highly influential organization, Benjamin Márquez explores MALDEF’s history and shows how it has thrived and served as a voice for the Latina/o community throughout its six decades of operation. But he also looks closely at large-scale investments of the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, and others, considering how their ties to MALDEF have influenced Mexican American and Latinx politics. Its story crafted from copious research into MALDEF and its benefactors, this book brings to light the influence of outside funding on the articulation of minority identities and the problems that come with creating change through institutional means.
The credential society : an historical sociology of education and stratification
The Credential Society by Randall Collins is a classic on higher education and its role in American society first published in 1979. Forty years later, it remains an essential text for understanding the reproduction of inequality. Its controversial claim that the expansion of American education has not increased social mobility, but created a cycle of credential inflation, has proven remarkably prescient. Collins shows how credential inflation stymies mass education's promises of upward mobility. An unacknowledged spiral of the rising production of credentials and job requirements was brought about by the expansion of high school and then undergraduate education, with consequences including grade inflation, rising educational costs, and misleading job promises dangled by for-profit schools. Collins examines medicine, law, and engineering to show the ways in which credentialing closed these high-status professions to new arrivals. In an era marked by the devaluation of high school diplomas, outcry about the value of expensive undergraduate degrees, and the proliferation of new professional degrees like the MBA, The Credential Society has more than stood the test of time. In the post-World War II period, students rebelled against the university establishment. In student-led movements, women, minorities, immigrants, and indigenous people demanded that universities adapt to better serve the increasingly heterogeneous public and student bodies. The success of these movements had a profound impact on the intellectual landscape of the twentieth century: out of these efforts were born ethnic studies, women's studies, and American studies.
In We Demand, Roderick A. Ferguson demonstrates that less than fifty years since this pivotal shift in the academy, the university is moving away from \"the people\" in all their diversity. Today the university is refortifying its commitment to the defense of the status quo off campus and the regulation of students, faculty, and staff on campus. The progressive forms of knowledge that the student-led movements demanded and helped to produce are being attacked on every front. Not only is this a reactionary move against the social advances since the '60s and '70s-it is part of the larger threat of anti-intellectualism in the United States.
Social equality in education : France and England 1789-1939
This book explores the development of education in France and England from the French Revolution to the outbreak of World War II. The author uses social equality as a framework to compare and contrast the educational systems of both countries and to emphasise the distinctive ideological legacies at the heart of both systems. The author analyses how the French Revolution prompted the emergence of an egalitarian ideology in education that in turn was crucial for propagating the values of equality, patriotism and unity. In tandem, the volume discusses the equally dramatic consequences of the Industrial Revolution for English society: while England led the world by 1800 in trade, commerce and industry, a strict form of liberalism and minimal state intervention impeded the reduction of educational inequality. This pioneering book will be of interest to students and scholars of educational equality as well as the history of education in France and England.

This article is an attempt to describe the history of events in the educational technology and research field from the start of the twenty-first century to the global COVD-19 Pandemic. This historical overview reflects on these events and their significance to the field’s identity and future.

Losing Hearts and Minds

Matthew K. Shannon provides readers with a reminder of a brief
and congenial phase of the relationship between the United States
and Iran. In Losing Hearts and Minds , Shannon tells the
story of an influx of Iranian students to American college campuses
between 1950 and 1979 that globalized U.S. institutions of higher
education and produced alliances between Iranian youths and
progressive Americans.
Losing Hearts and Minds is a narrative rife with
historical ironies. Because of its superpower competition with the
USSR, the U.S. government worked with nongovernmental organizations
to create the means for Iranians to train and study in the United
States. The stated goal of this initiative was to establish a
cultural foundation for the official relationship and to provide
Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi with educated elites to administer an
ambitious program of socioeconomic development. Despite these
goals, Shannon locates the incubation of at least one possible
version of the Iranian Revolution on American college campuses,
which provided a space for a large and vocal community of dissident
Iranian students to organize against the Pahlavi regime and earn
the support of empathetic Americans. Together they rejected the
Shah's authoritarian model of development and called for civil and
political rights in Iran, giving unwitting support to the rise of
the Islamic Republic of Iran.
