Reviewing stakeholders during the Itaewon Halloween crowd crush, Korea 2022: Qualitative content analysis version 2; peer review: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations
2023
Background
The issue of crowd crushes has been not only very complicated but also uncertain. This article aimed to evaluate how situations such as the Itaewon Halloween crowd crush in South Korea in 2022 can be better managed to reduce human loss.
Methods
Qualitative analysis was the key methodology used to compare emergency planning for ordinary events with contingency planning for special events, focusing on four stakeholders, namely governments, businesses, voluntary organizations, and other local communities.
Results
The key finding was that all stakeholders would need to supplement emergency planning for ordinary events with contingency planning for special events for the nation. They must embody cooperation, cutting-edge technologies, routinized updates, situation awareness, political rationality, training and exercise, and others, based on inclusion.
Conclusions
This is a pioneer study that examined the Itaewon crowd crush more comprehensively than others in particular by including many disaster management principles.

Towards a Holistic Framework for the Olympic-Led Sustainable Urban Planning Process
2024
Sport mega-events, like the Olympics, are renowned for their urban and socioeconomic impacts. Based on a literature review, this paper proposes a holistic framework for an Olympic-led sustainable planning process, encompassing five key sustainable urban principles: accessibility, integration, flexibility/adaptability, security, and sustainability compliance. The framework provides a structured approach to assess these principles at three different temporal and spatial levels: location selection, pre-event planning, and post-event planning. The proposed holistic framework is applied to the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, revealing a significant disconnection between the initially promised sustainable development goals and practical achievements. While enhancements in accessibility were observed, the other key sustainable urban principles exhibited limited or negligible improvements. The proposed holistic framework holds the potential to foster lasting positive impacts and sustainable urban improvements in host cities, particularly in developing countries.

Festival Attendees: A Motivation and Performance Analysis of a Young Adult Literature Festival
2022
This research, with data collected pre-COVID-19, provides insight into an interesting and rarely studied event, the young adult (YA) literature festival. Survey research conducted at a YA festival, with attendees generally from middle school through university age, provided useful insight into the motivations for visiting the festival, determination of the person making the decision to attend (surprisingly, the YA and rarely his/her parent) and the satisfaction and dissatisfaction factors that affected the attendee’s attitude toward the festival. In addition, Significance Performance Analysis (SPA) is introduced as an alternative to the widely used Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) model.
