[BILL FINGER] was born in [Born Mackay] but the cane-farming family moved to Ekibin Road, near Ekibin Creek, after the farm was wiped out by a cyclone. Mr Finger had been apprenticed at the age of 14 to Toohey's signwriters but later would progress to the positions of head signwriter and foreman at Victor Day and Sons. \"Dad related to them,\" the Rev Finger said. \"He was not set apart from them, he respected them. Mum and Dad were like second parents to some of them.\"

Exit ramp for city roads guru: From budgets in plain language to best ways around, he knows all
2006
Ask [Bill Finger] about the importance of street connections, and he reminisces about growing up in east Charlotte's Chantilly neighborhood. The PowerPoint presentation he trots out for civic groups includes an interactive map of Chantilly, showing all the places you can travel from his childhood home without encountering a traffic light. Finger, an institution at the Charlotte Department of Transportation, retires at the end of the month after almost three decades with the city. Despite his title, Finger doesn't supervise anyone, says his boss, Jim Humphrey. The legendary story about Finger is worth retelling. Finger has a key to the cabinets that control traffic lights, and if he sees something askew, he'll pull to the side of the road and manually operate the light. He can't resist.

Batman at 60 generates sweep back
by

Finger, Bill
1999
This year, Batman celebrates his 60th anniversary. And [Les] Daniels is back with \"Batman: The Complete History.\" Daniels does a fine job of reviewing 60 years, but where he truly excels is in probing all the influences that went into creating the Dark Knight. Seeking to duplicate the instant success enjoyed by Superman, artist Bob Kane set out to create his own hero. Superman himself; a flying machine designed by Leonardo da Vinci; one of Kane's favorite films, 1930's \"The Bat Whispers\"; 1920's \"The Mask of Zorro,\" in which a wealthy man transforms himself at night into a masked crusader for justice: All these influences came together in Kane's mind in creating Batman. Crucial to the creation of Batman was Kane's early partner in comics, Bill Finger, who wrote Batman's debut in \"Detective Comics\" No. 27 and scores of adventures in the early years. It was Finger who suggested the bat ears that transformed Kane's notion of a simple mask into a black cowl, who suggested Kane drop the ungainly wings he had drawn in favor of a cape, who suggested Kane change Batman's costume from red to gray. And it was Finger who added the eerie touch of Batman's eyes being replaced by white slits - an idea inspired by the Phantom, who also wore a black mask that revealed no eyeballs.
