CONSUMER: Medical Examination
2001
If a doctor referral still seems promising, [Michelle Frazier] goes one step further with her research -- she telephones a hospital where the doctor has privileges and talks to nurses who work in the same medical specialty. Although Frazier has worked as a nurse in local hospitals, she says she believes the average Southern Nevadan can make the same phone call without having special connections. Next, she establishes upfront with the doctor that she won't wait longer than 30 minutes from entering the office to being seen by the doctor. If she walks out after 30 minutes, but will be billed as missing the appointment, Frazier picks a different doctor. And if she walks out, she expects preferred appointment status when rescheduling. Lastly, on the day of an appointment, Frazier stays in touch with the doctor's office by phone. Assume for argument's sake her appointment is at 3 p.m. She phones around 2:30 p.m. to see whether the doctor is running on time. If she is told the doctor is two hours behind, she arranges to arrive at 4:30 p.m. -- 30 minutes ahead of the time the doctor likely will see her.

BREAST-FEEDING: Out in the Open
2001
A 1995 Nevada law guarantees the right to breast-feed \"in any public or private location where the mother is otherwise authorized to be.\" To avoid indecency charges, the law specifies women may nurse even if \"the nipple of the mother's breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breast-feeding.\" The American Academy of Pediatrics reports breast-feeding has been linked with improved baby health, specifically reduced diarrhea, ear infections, lower-respiratory infections, less bacterial meningitis, urinary tract infections. Other studies suggest, but do not prove, a link between breast-feeding and reduced incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, allergies, diabetes and several digestive-tract diseases. Even Americans who support infant breast-feeding do not always support toddler breast-feeding, concluded Family to Family's nurse [Michelle Frazier]. She recently offered a class in toddler breast-feeding to allay fears that the practice is abnormal or unhealthy. The worldwide age for weaning is 3 years old, Frazier noted.

2014
[...]the whole time we're hoping, 'Please don't let that bird fly away.'\" The trek may seem extreme but was well worth it for the birders, who viewed the excursion as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spy a snowy owl in person. Since October, 14 owls - white, with black markings and bright yellow eyes - have been spotted in the state, from Wrightsville Beach to Cape Hatteras and as far west as Asheville.
