Holidaying in Wharekauhau's lap of luxury
by
DAVIES, Ellen
in
Garrett, Bruce
2002
Three New Zealand luxury lodges made the top 20 in the prestigious Andrew Harper's Hideaway September report on international resort hideaways. Ellen Davies visited Wharekauhau on the south Wairarapa coast to discover its charms. Each guest is greeted by name on arrival, and Mr [Bruce Garrett] chats with them as they wander through the lodge. Traditional Kiwi hospitality was part of the attraction, he said -- the guests enjoyed chatting with the staff, who at a ratio of 30:20 on most occasions outnumbered the guests. Mr Garrett said New Zealand's luxury lodges complemented each other, with a trail informally established as international visitors \"lodge hop\".

New variety research critical
2001
Testing and developing arable seed varieties imported from overseas into crops suitable for New Zealand conditions is just one of researchers' aims at the 90ha Kimihia site, the flagship of Wrightson Research. Whereas Kimihia breeds up different forage varieties in New Zealand and then tests them, it does not breed arable cereal varieties. The crossing has been done overseas and the stable seed is bought in for testing under New Zealand conditions. Another aspect of Kimihia's work is contract work for northern hemisphere nurseries. Multiplication at Kimihia of seed varieties developed in the northern hemisphere can help get that seed on to the market a season earlier.

By grazing quickly and lightly, the superior leaf yield of Highlander could be used to finish stock in late summer. It could then regrow and produce a large quantity of bulb and bare leaf.

Brassicas should be considered for providing a reliable, high- quality feed source to boost peak dairy production and achieve target liveweights sooner, Kimihia Research Centre nutrition evaluation manager Bruce Garrett said. Options included forage brassicas for summer and autumn feed with high regrowth ability, digestibility and feed use. Popular cultivars included pasja and wairoa.

Turnips have feed-crop potential
1996
Mr [Bruce Garrett] said turnips, like other brassicas, also offered the advantage of fitting into the rotation. After the crop had been grazed the paddock could be resown early, often with minimal tillage. However, maize required more tidying up and because of the time when it was harvested the farmer was left with fewer options for the paddock.
