WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
\"I'm such a work in progress at the moment, it's crazy, and life wants me on edge, I swear to you. But as long as I don't forget the past, I'm cool. One must always be mindful, just like you might forget that old girlfriend who tried to slit your throat, but she's really still hot. If you remember the stitches more than you remember the [sex], you're going to be just fine.\" - Robert Downey Jr. in Rolling Stone \"It's really good to know you don't have to give up on your dreams to graduate high school, and you don't have to quit your education to live your dreams. It's really cool that you can do both.\" \"We were with [Estelle Getty] when it mattered. . . . Funerals are about [journalism] . . . who was there and who wasn't? That's not about Estelle. We adored her. To tell you the truth, her passing is tough on us, but it's a blessing for her. She's been so ill for so long, she's in a better place now, wherever she is.\"
Golden Girl
A key part of the \"Golden Girls\" backstory is that, before coming to live with Dorothy, Blanche and Rose, Sophia suffered a stroke, damaging the part of her brain that acts as a censor. This tragic disability is, ironically, what makes Sophia so very appealing. Unlike the rest of us, Sophia wasn't always needing to edit her own thoughts. She could point out the obvious, be it Rose's absent-mindedness or Blanche's promiscuity, without eliciting hard feelings. After all, she couldn't help it.

Death of TV Golden Girl Getty
She died at her Hollywood home. Her son Carl Gettleman said: \"She was loved on six continents and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven.\"
GOLDEN GIRL ESTELLE GETTY, 84
The Golden Girls, featuring four female retirees sharing a house in Miami, grew out of NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff's belief that television was ignoring its older viewers. Three stars had already appeared in previous series: Bea Arthur in Maude, Betty White in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rue McClanahan in Mama's Family.

The last character to be cast was Sophia Petrillo, the feisty 80-something mother of Arthur's character. \"The only comfort at this moment is that although [Estelle Getty] has moved on, Sophia will always be with us,\" White said in an e-mail to The Associated Press after Getty's death was announced.
