KHA/Kerry Hill Architects : works and projects
The late architect Kerry Hill designed buildings that whisper rather than scream. This illustrated book brings together a corpus of works from 1992 to the present, with an emphasis on the actively ongoing practice's recently completed works, including the celebrated Aman hotels and resorts in Tokyo, Kyoto and outside Shanghai, as well as important large-scale buildings in his home town, Perth.
King of the hill
Today, for [Kerry Hill]'s practice - which also involves a team of seven in Perth, designing projects in Australia, Southeast Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, Dubai, Turkey and Bhutan - is working on the need to find what he describes as \"the felt structure of reality\". As a young architect, Hill worked for three years with the Perth- based architectural firm of Howlett and Bailey (after being one of the first eight graduates to complete an architectural degree at the University of Western Australia in 1968) before applying to various companies in the United States. Looking back, Hill, who lists Louis Kahn as his architectural role model, says he found Asia to be such fertile ground for the birth of his creations that he set up his own practice in Singapore in 1979.
From west to east, a straight line to architect gold
Speaking to The Australian at his newly completed Fremantle apartment yesterday, Mr [Kerry Hill] said it was a great honour. Mr Hill's international practice is based in Singapore but his firm has recently opened a Fremantle office to oversee his Australian work. Among his current projects are a performing arts centre in his home town and a Singapore campus for NSW University. Mr Hill names the classical, turn-of-the-century University of Western Australia campus as his favourite piece of architecture -- no surprise, given he is a UWA graduate and fiercely proud of his origins. He said UWA's landscaping was an element he tried to use throughout his work, particularly in his current university project.

The Kamloops under-16B Wildcats girls soccer team is having success at a tournament in Kelowna. On Saturday, the Wildcats blanked Kelowna U-15A, 1-0. Bills proposed to allow student-led prayer; Legislative leaders await ruling in Texas case
Several legislators are proposing that student-led prayers be allowed in public schools, but General Assembly leaders say the bills are unlikely to win approval this year. Democratic Del. George W. Owings III and Republican Del. Anthony J. O'Donnell, both of Calvert County, filed their bill in response to a high-profile incident at a county high school graduation ceremony last year, when a student's request to lead an invocation was denied after another student protested. Prince George's Democratic Del. Kerry A. Hill and Baltimore County Democratic Del. Emmett C. Burns Jr., both ministers, have filed a similar bill that would allow students to pray aloud in school and at graduation ceremonies.
MADISON'S TIES TO LATIN AMERICA EXPLORED
Our sister organizations, Colombia Support Network, the Wisconsin Coordinating Council on Nicaragua and the Madison-Arcatao Sister City Project have received ample coverage in the Your Forum sections in the Sunday State Journal. Their compassionate work certainly deserves [Kerry Hill]'s intelligent and thorough stories.
Gold award goes offshore
