Fire kindles passion to rebuild dream home; 'We just told each other we weren't going to be victims,\ artist says after home destroyed
2007
\"I'm determined not to let it ruin the rest of my life. I'm not going to give it my misery,\" Hubbell said that day. \"We just told each other we weren't going to be victims.\" For almost all of the reconstruction wood, Hubbell used reclaimed cedar, freshly milled from local fire-damaged trees. In the bathroom, Hubbell and his helpers made a mosaic of [Anne Hubbell]'s mother's china, which had broken in the fire. Spotting the old wrought-iron door hinges in the ruins of the gutted buildings, [Mark Tighe] sandblasted them, powder-coated them and put them back to use. \"Even in snow, she'll go out and hang up clothes,\" Drew Hubbell says. \"She hates to use energy. I don't even know if she's used that dryer yet.\"

Hubbell House plans going on view
The plans are being created by the combined efforts of Bernalillo County, a neighborhood group called the Committee to Preserve the Hubbell Property, University of New Mexico graduate students in planning and architecture, Cornerstones Community Partnerships in Santa Fe (adobe restoration specialists) and as many volunteers as the collective effort can enlist. [James L. Hubbell] was a Connecticut Yankee who came to New Mexico as a soldier in 1846; [Juliana Gutierrez] was the granddaughter of one of the first governors of New Mexico under Mexican rule, according to information from the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site in Ganado, Ariz. \"They opened the door to starting a more mixed culture here,\" says Joe Hlifka, chairman of the Committee to Preserve the Hubbell Property. \"Pajarito is the most mixed population of Anglo and Spanish of all of the South Valley.\"

Hubbell House Restoration Under Way
\"We've just gotten started doing some of the major adobe repair work,\" [Jonah Stanford] said. \"Some of the walls had gotten to the point where they had no more structural integrity, so they had to be taken down and done completely from scratch.\" Stanford said the crew of about 12 workers is following strict state standards for historic preservation, including using the exact materials and techniques for the adobe that were used when the house was erected shortly after the Civil War. Lorenzo Hubbell, treasurer of the Hubbell House Alliance, said he is happy to see how quickly restoration has progressed since the selection of Crocker for the job.
