Tweed-area residents continue fight against major hog farm
[Mark Slack] has proposed a factory hog farm on about 60 hectares (150- acre) of land about 14 kilometres east of [TWEED-HUNGERFORD], in the heart of family farms operating since the 1800s. Slack appealed council's decision and won a ruling in Belleville's Superior Court ordering Tweed to reinstate the building permit and allow the operation to proceed. Village Reeve Doug Mumford told residents gathered at Tuesday's meeting that a second appeal by council would likely be a waste of time.
Linda Akey's goal - \make decisions and move forward\
Representing Tweed on municipal council has been a \"life-long goal\" for Linda Akey whose father sat on the old [Hungerford-Tweed] council. Like her father, Akey has resided in Hungerford all her life and currently lives with her husband Gary in an impressive farmhouse built by the grandfather of Canadian artist Robert Bateman. She is \"passionate\" about municipal politics and ran for reeve in 2010. Ms. Akey reports 11 years experience on municipal committees including the Planning Committee and the Committee of Adjustment. The Committee of Adjustment reports to Hastings County and mainly deals with zoning and set-back issues. When asked if she had concerns that individuals seeking municipal office are \"painting a bulls eye\" on themselves for all manner of complaints, Akey replies, \"I'm ready for it. I do understand the municipal process, but time is money. Don't study the concern for so long that nothing gets done. Make decisions and move forward.\"
School board faces $3-million deficit
\"All aspects of the board's operation will be impacted by finding the $3 million. We'll be looking at all areas, not just classrooms, but outside the classroom, this building [the board's administration office], supports in schools. Because there's fewer kids that means there will be fewer teachers.\" \"We have to think of the students and what's best for our district,\" [Dwayne Inch] said. \"We also have to be realistic about our cuts. They're going to be difficult decisions to make.\" Colour Photo: Stephen Petrick, Stirling EMC / Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Superintendent of Business Services [Dave Rutherford] addresses trustees at a board meeting on April 23.
