Arnold Lobel in indirect translation: The case of Frog and Toad in Croatian
2024
It seems that, for various reasons, indirect translation still occupies a marginal role in Translation Studies (see Pięta 2014) and it has not asserted itself as a research field in its own right. This paper discusses the role of indirect translation and mediating languages in translating children’s literature. The reasons for indirect translations in the Croatian context are explained. The process of indirect translation is investigated within the theoretical background of retranslation. Indirect translation is exemplified by Arnold Lobel’s story The Surprise (from Frog and Toad All Year), a story which has been translated into Croatian through the medium of German. The reasons for indirect translation are investigated as well as the effects of indirect translation on the final translated text. The article examines signals of foreignisation and domestication in the target text and the extent to which they can be attributed to German as the mediating language and German culture as the mediating culture.

Arnold Lobel, Author-Illustrator
1987
Among his most popular works was a series of four books about a frog and a toad, best friends who shared many adventures. ''Frog and Toad Together,'' the second in the series, was a 1973 Newberry Honor book, one of the most prestigious distinctions in children's literature. ''Writing is very painful to me,'' he said in an interview in 1979. ''I have to force myself not to think in visual terms, because I know if I start to think of pictures, I'll cop out on the text.'' Two works ''Dinosaurs,'' which he illustrated, and ''Turn Around Wind,'' which he wrote and illustrated, are scheduled to be published soon.

Review: My Hero: Arnold Lobel
2011
Perhaps best of all are his four books about Frog and Toad. Frog and Toad are friends, Frog being the straight guy and Toad the one who embodies most of the failings. [Arnold Lobel] said once that \"Frog and Toad are really two aspects of myself\". I think we can all recognise ourselves in Toad's stubbornness and Frog's common sense. In one of my favourite stories, \"The List\", Toad makes a list of things to do: get up, go for walk with Frog, and so on. He enjoys ticking the items off his list, but when it blows away he refuses to do anything. (He can't run after the list because that wasn't one of the things to do.)
