Modernity and Disenchantment: Charles Taylor on the Identity of the Modern Self
In his magnum opus, Sources of the Self: The Making of Modern Identity (1989), Charles Taylor gives an exhaustive and teleologically interpretive history of the modern self. He, in fact, is in search of the core of the modern identity. By ‘identity’ Taylor means the ensemble of the understanding of what is to be a ‘human agent’, a ‘person’, a ‘self’. Taylor in generating the ontology of the self is greatly inspired by the understanding of Dasein in Heidegger. This paper also focuses on how Taylor uses Heidegger’s hermeneutics of the self in several ways to give to modernity a base that is not Cartesian. Taylor’s central argument is ‘how the assertion of the modern individual has spawned an erroneous understanding (identity) of the self’, where one experiences a loss of horizon. He has turned our attention, more than anyone else, towards the communitarian constitution of the self, and pointed out the limitations of insights within liberal individualism. For Taylor, as for early Heidegger, the self is not neutral or atomic. The self exists only in terms of questions and constitutive concerns, and it is not amenable to arbitrary determination, but can be made sense of only in terms of its life as a whole at any moment.

DIÁLOGOS DISCIPLINARES: TENSIONES ONTOLÓGICAS Y EPISTEMOLÓGICAS
Palabras clave: arqueología y antropología - polifonías y desigualdades - modernidad capitalocéntrica - praxis profesional Abstract This Dossier brings together papers that face the challenge of building alternatives to approaches that follow guidelines drawn from capitalocentric modernity based on dichotomies or oppositions rather than on relationships in contexts of socio-cultural diversity (and, therefore, economically and politically implicated). From the social sciences, the articles included in this volume expose experiences in different regions of the country that bet on new ways of understanding and explaining the relationality between objects and subjects, seeking to enable more sensitive and committed scientific and professional practices. The need to deepen discussions about a professional work that is nourished by the plurality of voices around the modes of perception and relationship with our territories, our memories, our knowledge and senses, which recognizes the colonial heritage and neocolonialist interests but also opens a hopeful universe for resistance and re-existence, is evident. Within this framework, different disciplinary perspectives converge in a production that seeks to problematize the construction of interpretations about our social reality, its anchorage in the past, and a present crossed by conflict, dispossession and inequalities Key words: archaeology and anthropology - polyphonies and inequalities - capitalocentric modernity - professional praxis Introducción En las últimas décadas, la ciencia se ha visto interpelada (externa pero también internamente) en su hasta entonces prerrogativa incuestionada acerca de la potestad en la construcción de conocimiento, así como en la exclusiva legitimidad de sus aseveraciones.
CHAPTER 9: Artist's Essay: Towers, Shipwrecks, and Neo-Baroque Allegories
According to Benjamin, with the \"baroque it is common practice ... to pile up fragments ceaselessly, without any strict idea of a goal\" (in Broadfoot 9). Here I want to review some of the findings that informed Barroco Nova, especially because they bear heavily on my preoccupations as an ostensible neo-baroque artist.2 The exhibition Ultrabaroque, organized and circulated by the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, was important for audiences throughout the non-Latin world because of the significant complexity its wide range of contemporary art emphasised. [...]the return of the baroque brings liberation of the repressed and is thus seen as an emancipation from modernity.\" In 2011 he co-curated with Susan Edelstein the exhibition, \"Barroco Nova: Neo-Baroque Moves in Contemporary Art\" (Museum London, Ontario). Since 2007 he has been part of the 'Hispanic/Transatlantic Baroque' project funded by the Canadian grant body SSHRC and has been working with the neo-baroque research team.
This study is an attempt to uncover the philosophical fundamentals and methodological principles underlying the topics and ideas discussed in Malek Bennabi's first book The Qur’an Phenomenon. This book is characterized by two major features. First, it is in the Islamic context a pioneering intellectual and systematic response to the philosophical and methodological challenges, which have, in the wake of modernity and post-modernity, faced religion and religious thought in general and Islam in particular, conceptually, axiological, and institutionally. Second, it contains the grand intellectual themes and central problematic which oriented Bennabi's thinking on the various issues and subjects he dealt with in his subsequent works. In analyzing and discussing the theses and positions expressed by Bennabi, much attention has been given to historically contextualizing and relating them to the intellectual and philosophical developments that took place in the West with respect to the consequences of modernity and manifestations of post- modernity.
A Short Foreword
The preface provides a brief introduction to the five contributions collected in the issue and related to Laurent Pernot’s book La rhétorique de l’éloge dans le monde gréco-romain thirty years after its publication. The preface also highlights the main breakthroughs that Pernot’s book has made, constituting a methodological model for any research on ancient rhetoric. The book’s comprehensiveness and modernity in its approach to authors, works, genres, contexts and ideas is also emphasized.
