Egalitarian Leaders and Rational Followers
2024
This article explores the dynamics between leaders and followers in Indonesia's mass Islamic movement Muhammadiyah by analysing how its leaders view the characteristics of followers, the position and role of leaders, and the nature of group cohesion. The findings suggest that Muhammadiyah leaders generally do not prioritize the development of a strong collective identity and group solidarity. Their approach is informed by a view of followers as rational actors and leaders primarily as conveyors of Islamic teachings, with a deliberate avoidance of forming deep emotional ties within the organization. These insights are crucial for grasping Muhammadiyah's internal dynamics and evaluating the effectiveness of its collective endeavours.

manhaj tarjih
2021
This study uses a literature study of examining the Tarjih Council of Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organisation in Indonesia. Criticism is directed towards manhaj’s principle which states that any classical Islamic school of law should not be embraced and, thus, breaks up from the chain of Islamic intellectuality. The critics, however, fail to cover the very idea of Muhammadiyah as an embodiment of the Islamic renewal vision. The article aims to reveal the evolution of the manhaj. The evolution will be elaborated into stages to show the development of concepts and principles in each stage. The article is based on a literature study using constructive conceptual analysis. The analysis is divided into three steps, namely analytical assessment, performative aspects, and conceptual genealogy, stressing the reflective relationship between knowledge and social reality. The study shows that the Tarjih Council’s preference not to embrace any classical Islamic schools of law has developed since the establishment of the Tarjih Council. The developments of manhaj’s formulation occur in three stages from 1924 until 2000. The manhaj comes up with the synthesis of textuality, rationality, and spirituality as the basic vision of Muhammadiyah’s renewal idea which reflects the achievement of a modernist Islamic movement. The study, in comparison to previous research, provides a more comprehensive picture of the manhaj of Muhammadiyah as a representation of the Islamic renewal movement and shows how the manhaj comes to a synthesis that marks Muhammadiyah as a unique modernist-renewal movement.ContributionThe study enriches the perspectives on the manhaj as the backbone of Muhammadiyah ideology and shows that Islamic modernism in Indonesia has stepped further to uncover a synthesis suitable to Indonesian society.

Civil Islam
2011
Civil Islamtells the story of Islam and democratization in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation. Challenging stereotypes of Islam as antagonistic to democracy, this study of courage and reformation in the face of state terror suggests possibilities for democracy in the Muslim world and beyond.
Democratic in the early 1950s and with rich precedents for tolerance and civility, Indonesia succumbed to violence. In 1965, Muslim parties were drawn into the slaughter of half a million communists. In the aftermath of this bloodshed, a \"New Order\" regime came to power, suppressing democratic forces and instituting dictatorial controls that held for decades. Yet from this maelstrom of violence, repressed by the state and denounced by conservative Muslims, an Islamic democracy movement emerged, strengthened, and played a central role in the 1998 overthrow of the Soeharto regime. In 1999, Muslim leader Abdurrahman Wahid was elected President of a reformist, civilian government.
In explaining how this achievement was possible, Robert Hefner emphasizes the importance of civil institutions and public civility, but argues that neither democracy nor civil society is possible without a civilized state. Against portrayals of Islam as inherently antipluralist and undemocratic, he shows that Indonesia's Islamic reform movement repudiated the goal of an Islamic state, mobilized religiously ecumenical support, promoted women's rights, and championed democratic ideals. This broadly interdisciplinary and timely work heightens our awareness of democracy's necessary pluralism, and places Indonesia at the center of our efforts to understand what makes democracy work.

This study will narrate the response of Muhammadiyah's actions in stemming Radicalism in the leadership of Haedar Nashir, namely the period 2015 - 2021, the reaction of Muhammadiyah's Radicalism at this time, offering a Moderation program for the fight against Radicalism. After the Reformation, it experienced radicalization in ideological power. The form of Radicalism was not only in the scope of religious ideology but also entered the scope of the ideologies of liberalism, capitalism, totalitarianism to fascism. Therefore, it can be concluded that Radicalism is not only from the point of view of religious activity but also that ideology can be implemented in a system of Radicalism in the form of Economics and Politics. This research has a problem formulation, namely, how is Muhammadiyah's response in stemming Radicalism? Especially three points of view from Religious Radicalism, Economics, and Politics. This study also uses two theories, namely the theory of Moderation and the idea of Radicalism. The research method used is descriptive qualitative to examine Muhammadiyah and Moderation on the response of Muhammadiyah's leadership in 2015-2021 in stemming Radicalism related to the research questions in the background. This qualitative research uses a previous study's literature study data collection technique. The researcher also tries to take a literature review from the Connected paper application with two keywords, Muhammadiyah Moderation and Muhammadiyah Radicalism. The qualitative data analysis is interpreted by analyzing data reduction, data exposure, and drawing conclusions or verifying conclusions

\Reason\ of political and religious moderation in the book of Ghiyāth al-Umam by al-Juwaynī and its contemporary Southeast Asian context
2023
This article presents a critical reading of the work of Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni (d. 1085) entitled Ghiyath al-Umam (Ghiyāthī). This reading is necessary to fill in the gaps in the study of the roots and precedents of moderation in the work of Islamic political thought in the medieval period. Al-Juwayni's political and religious thoughts, when faced with non-ideal political and religious situations, showed a well-founded character of moderation. The solutions to the problems of his time that he offered were the products of \"moderation reason\" rooted in his religious beliefs and political pragmatism. The precedent of \"moderation reason\" shown by al-Juwayni finds its contemporary relevance in the model of the attitude of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah towards Pancasila in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. They formulated the concept of political and religious thought in accordance with the context of al-Juwayni's intellectual, political, and religious attitudes. In the end, this paper indicates that the concept of moderation is not a modern discourse programmed by the government without having roots and precedents in Islamic political thought.

This study aims to explain the relationship between Muhammadiyah and the Indonesian Government in the efforts to realize peace for the Rohingya conflict. Further, the study explain the tidal tide between Muhammadiyah and the Indonesian Government in realizing peace for the Rohingya in Rakhine, mainly concern to peace diplomacy strategies. The Indonesian government emphasized silent diplomacy as a strategy for ethnic Rohingya conflict resolution. This is very reasonable because ASEAN still adheres to the principle of non-intervention. Muhammadiyah, in a statement, strongly rejected silent diplomacy, arguing that the absence of political pressure from Indonesia to Myanmar to stop the genocide. Using Faith-based Diplomacy approach, the main argument of this study is that although the interests of Muhammadiyah (religious organization) and Indonesia (government) are the same namely the realization of peace, but with the differences in the views of diplomacy (instrument) strategy exerts the difference in the meaning of the results of peace diplomacy itself.

2025
