Seaside Polaroids
\"The quintessential British landscape--the seaside--is the subject of these nostalgic Polaroids by the acclaimed English photographer Jon Nicholson. Anyone who grew up holidaying on England's beaches is familiar with the distinctive features of these historic resorts--not the exclusive haunts of the rich and famous, but the gritty, often rocky shores of the Atlantic and the Irish and North Seas, filled with amusement arcades, bathing huts, beach umbrellas, and people of all ages and classes. Jon Nicolson's Polaroid SX-70 camera is the perfect vehicle to capture the color and character of summers at the sea. At once immediate and ephemeral, these delicately hued, slightly muted images taken with original, out-of- date film stock depict the faded glory of Yarmouth's giant piers, Brighton's pebbly shores, the Blackpool Pleasure Beach amusement park, and many other resorts across Britain. Each of the 70 photographs is beautifully reproduced on its own page with descriptive captions. A foreword by Joseph Galliano provides a wry, contemporary perspective on these beloved, centuries-old locations.\"--Publisher's website.
Juniors earn first win of season
\"It's definitely a confidence builder, and I think it's a good building block going forward here,\" [Jon Nicholson] said. \"We've got some winnable games coming up and we've really god a chance to build on that and hopefully go on a streak here. But one at a time.\" Leading the offence was Connor Leies, who scored two goals and added five assists. Brett Hawrys had two goals and three helpers, Alec Molander, Brody Glemnitz and Cole Kryworuchka had two goals apiece and Tarrin Davies had a goal and four assists. Other scorers were Darrin Wilson and Monty Chisholm.
Juniors get going at home
The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen hold their home opener Saturday (May 2) against the Delta Islanders. Nanaimo sports fans can look forward to Jordan Kuzieks return to the lacrosse box; the former V.I. Raiders lineman could be in the T-men lineup for the home opener. The T-men are holding their home opener at the Nanaimo Ice Centre and will then move to their usual home floor, Frank Crane Arena. Fans will see really exciting lacrosse, said [Kyle Couling].
Junior Timbermen have eye to the future

6-week-old girl dies sleeping with parents
New parents are advised not to allow infants to sleep with them, said Dr. Jon Nicholson, a pediatrician at Mercy Children's Hospital. \"The problem with bed-sharing is that parents sleep so deeply ... the baby isn't strong enough to move its head or make a motion that would wake up an adult,\" Dr. Nicholson said. \"It doesn't take any force at all.\" \"The nurses on the labor and delivery floor go though a whole laundry list [and] ... we actually have [parents] sign a piece of paper to reduce the risk of SIDS, and one is 'don't bed-share.' \" \"We do have factions out there who argue in favor of bed-sharing ... people [who say] 'because the animals have done this for years, people should do it,' \" Ms. [Judith Bannon] said.
The distress of the business of caring
You have a person coping with the knowledge that death may be uncomfortably close. Some people faced with this knowledge \"rage against the dying of the light\" in the words of the Dylan Thomas poem. The brunt of that rage may very well be borne by the carer. Others may be distressed in other ways - think of that radio interview with Nuala O'Faolain. What of both parties' need to find meaning in their lives? What if both are interrupted from doing the things which gave their lives meaning? Many carers find meaning in carrying out the caring role. Others don't. And how do you find meaning in being cared for? Some do, but for others it must be impossible. * Padraig O'Morain is a counsellor. Military band kicks off summer season
[Jon Nicholson], who has been with the band since 1994, said the town hall contains a treasure trove of band memorabilia dating back to the 19th century. The band's players have also endured the passage of time. Nicholson said some musicians have been with the band since the 1930s. \"We play a completely different concert every week,\" Nicholson said. \"The (musicians) have an extensive library.\"
The MuzikMafia is pulling mobs of fans
The MuzikMafia record label is formed around a crew of folks who, though they may fit into the country world, they don't do it so well. Take Cowboy Troy, who's a 6-foot-5 black rapping cowboy, or Two Foot Fred, a 3-foot-2 dancing dwarf, Rachel Kice who paints during the songs, or even superstars Big and Rich, and of course, Gretchen Wilson who broke many glam-girl rules of country when she declared herself a redneck woman. A large portion of the Mafia, including [Jon Nicholson], Cowboy Troy, Two Foot Fred, James Otto, stage painter Kice, and Shannon Lawson, will be performing at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Mescalero at 8 tonight. The Mafia, though, were started when the four founders, The Godfathers as they call themselves, were simply having beers at a Nashville watering hole where Gretchen Wilson was the bartender, Nicholson said.
