Refocused Psychotherapy as The First Line Intervention in Behavioral Health
Written by father-daughter psychologists Nick and Janet Cummings, this text provides proven patient-responsive interventions by practitioners who together have nearly a century of hands-on practice and innovation between them. Refocused Psychotherapy responds directly to the recent decline of psychosocial services and helps to put psychotherapy back as the first line intervention in mental health. The authors teach psychotherapists how to work side by side with primary care physicians to provide efficacy, effectiveness, and efficiency-the standards psychotherapeutic intervention is held up to. Detailed case studies are followed up by discussions of diagnosis, personality type, homework, and therapeutic techniques that show readers how to form their own case conceptualizations. The authors also teach readers how to treat their patients individually and to diagnose effectively through their onion/garlic conceptualization. Finally, they provide lists of common abbreviations that are helpful to know when reading prescriptions, and lists of drugs, drug interactions, dosage, and side effects that expand readers' vocabulary and allow them to be more knowledgeable as they work with primary care physicians. These innovative and revealing techniques will help readers develop the skills necessary for cost-effective therapeutic results.
Integrated Care
Integrated care (IC) is quickly gaining national prominence as a promising new model for health care. This book and accompanying DVD will serve as a comprehensive and practical guide for educators and future and current IC practitioners interested in becoming part of this growing trend and learning the “nuts and bolts” of providing behavioral health services in a medical setting. The authors have reviewed current research, surveyed expert clinicians working in IC settings, and spent many hours working with and learning from IC physicians, behavioral health professionals, policy makers, and consumers. Chapters explore the reasons why and ways in which IC is becoming a leading model for treating those with mild to moderate mental health and/or emotional problems, addressing the health behavior changes needed to improve chronic physical health conditions, and consider such important topics as Creating and growing an IC practice Ethical issues in IC The role of behavioral health screening tools in medical settings Peek’s Three World View of health care Internship experiences of graduate students in an IC practice The online DVD features role-play vignettes and common practices in IC with commentary from the authors, providing valuable examples of how a behavioral health provider and physician collaborate to provide quality patient care.
Endangered private practice
Endangered Private Practice explains how health care reform, driven by the Affordable Health Care Act of 2010, affects and will be affecting those providers within the delivery system section of health care. Private practice businesses cannot continue to offer quality services while losing money, and access has not improved. Due to many of the changes within the reform package the mental health profession has lost over 30% of their reimbursements and has had to increase their overhead expenses by another 30% in order to stay in practice. This book was written so that readers can become more sensitized to the real winners and losers of the reform movement and to get a clearer picture of what health care services might look like in the future.
Proactive Personality and Creative Behavior
This study examines the link between proactive personality and creative behavior by focusing on employee thriving at work as a mediator. Data from 438 employees and their supervisors were collected and examined by conducting structural equation modeling. This analysis revealed that employee thriving at work fully mediates the relationship between proactive personality and creative behavior. Additionally, the results showed that the perceived presence of high-involvement human resources (HR) practices in the organization enhances the tendency of proactive individuals to thrive at work. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for theory and practice as well as on directions for future research.
Mindfulness Meditation for Chronic Pain: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Background Chronic pain patients increasingly seek treatment through mindfulness meditation. Purpose This study aims to synthesize evidence on efficacy and safety of mindfulness meditation interventions for the treatment of chronic pain in adults. Method We conducted a systematic review on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with meta-analyses using the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman method for random-effects models. Quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Outcomes included pain, depression, quality of life, and analgesic use. Results Thirty-eight RCTs met inclusion criteria; seven reported on safety. We found low-quality evidence that mindfulness meditation is associated with a small decrease in pain compared with all types of controls in 30 RCTs. Statistically significant effects were also found for depression symptoms and quality of life. Conclusions While mindfulness meditation improves pain and depression symptoms and quality of life, additional well-designed, rigorous, and large-scale RCTs are needed to decisively provide estimates of the efficacy of mindfulness meditation for chronic pain.
An Implicit Theories of Personality Intervention Reduces Adolescent Aggression in Response to Victimization and Exclusion
Adolescents are often resistant to interventions that reduce aggression in children. At the same time, they are developing stronger beliefs in the fixed nature of personal characteristics, particularly aggression. The present intervention addressed these beliefs. A randomized field experiment with a diverse sample of Grades 9 and 10 students (ages 14–16, n = 230) tested the impact of a 6-session intervention that taught an incremental theory (a belief in the potential for personal change). Compared to no-treatment and coping skills control groups, the incremental theory group behaved significantly less aggressively and more prosocially 1 month postintervention and exhibited fewer conduct problems 3 months postintervention. The incremental theory and the coping skills interventions also eliminated the association between peer victimization and depressive symptoms.
Examining the Efficacy of a Family Peer Advocate Model for Black and Hispanic Caregivers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects individuals across all racial and ethnic groups, yet rates of diagnosis are disproportionately higher for Black and Hispanic children. Caregivers of children with ASD experience significant stressors, which have been associated with parental strain, inadequate utilization of mental health services and lower quality of life. The family peer advocate (FPA) model has been utilized across service delivery systems to provide family-to-family support, facilitate engagement, and increase access to care. This study used a randomized controlled design to examine the efficacy of FPAs in a racially and ethnically diverse sample. Results demonstrate significantly increased knowledge of ASD and reduced levels of stress for caregivers who received the FPA intervention as compared to treatment as usual.
Transitioning Together: A Multi-family Group Psychoeducation Program for Adolescents with ASD and Their Parents
Currently there are few evidence-based programs available for families of individuals with ASD during the transition to adulthood. The present study provided a preliminary evaluation of a multi-family group psychoeducation intervention using a randomized waitlist control design (n = 41). Families in the intervention condition participated in Transitioning Together, an 8-week program designed to reduce family distress and improve social functioning for adolescents. Findings indicated significant improvements in parental depressive symptoms and problem solving from pre- to post-intervention for parents in the intervention condition but not for parents in the control condition. Social interactions also improved for youth in the intervention condition relative to controls. Parents reported satisfaction with the program and particularly valued the opportunity to interact with other families.
