Status in Classical Athens
Ancient Greek literature, Athenian civic ideology, and modern classical scholarship have all worked together to reinforce the idea that there were three neatly defined status groups in classical Athens--citizens, slaves, and resident foreigners. But this book--the first comprehensive account of status in ancient democratic Athens--clearly lays out the evidence for a much broader and more complex spectrum of statuses, one that has important implications for understanding Greek social and cultural history. By revealing a social and legal reality otherwise masked by Athenian ideology, Deborah Kamen illuminates the complexity of Athenian social structure, uncovers tensions between democratic ideology and practice, and contributes to larger questions about the relationship between citizenship and democracy. Each chapter is devoted to one of ten distinct status groups in classical Athens (451/0-323 BCE): chattel slaves, privileged chattel slaves, conditionally freed slaves, resident foreigners (metics), privileged metics, bastards, disenfranchised citizens, naturalized citizens, female citizens, and male citizens. Examining a wide range of literary, epigraphic, and legal evidence, as well as factors not generally considered together, such as property ownership, corporal inviolability, and religious rights, the book demonstrates the important legal and social distinctions that were drawn between various groups of individuals in Athens. At the same time, it reveals that the boundaries between these groups were less fixed and more permeable than Athenians themselves acknowledged. The book concludes by trying to explain why ancient Greek literature maintains the fiction of three status groups despite a far more complex reality.
Life skills transfer in athletes: internal and external antecedents
Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the associations between passion for sport, the motivational climate in sport, family support, and life skills transfer. The sample consisted of 261 athletes aged 12-24 years (17.7±3.46; 62.8% boys/men). Structural equation modeling suggested a positive association between harmonious passion, task-oriented motivational climate, and family support indicators with the life skills transfer dimensions. In contrast, a negative association between obsessive passion and ego-oriented motivational climate with the life skills transfer dimensions was observed. These results constitute relevant information for sports programs based on positive youth development, since the explanatory model suggests personal, contextual, and relational determinants could influence life skill transfer positively or negatively. Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as associações entre a paixão pelo esporte, o clima motivacional no esporte, o apoio familiar e a transferência de habilidades de vida. A amostra consistiu em 261 atletas com idades entre 12 e 24 anos (17,7 ± 3,46; 62,8% meninos/homens). A modelagem de equações estruturais sugeriu uma associação positiva entre a paixão harmoniosa, o clima motivacional orientado para tarefas e os indicadores de apoio familiar com as dimensões de transferência de habilidades de vida. Em contraste, foi observada uma associação negativa entre a paixão obsessiva e o clima motivacional orientado para o ego com as dimensões de transferência de habilidades de vida. Esses resultados constituem informações relevantes para programas esportivos baseados no desenvolvimento positivo da juventude, já que o modelo explicativo sugere que determinantes pessoais, contextuais e relacionais podem influenciar a transferência de habilidades de vida positiva ou negativamente. Resumen El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar las asociaciones entre pasión por el deporte, el clima motivacional en el deporte, el apoyo familiar y la transferencia de habilidades de vida. La muestra consistió en 261 atletas de entre 12 y 24 años (17.7 ± 3.46; 62.8% hombres). La modelización de ecuaciones estructurales sugirió una asociación positiva entre la pasión armoniosa, el clima motivacional orientado a tareas y los indicadores de apoyo familiar con las dimensiones de transferencia de habilidades de vida. En contraste, se observó una asociación negativa entre la pasión obsesiva y el clima motivacional orientado al ego con las dimensiones de transferencia de habilidades de vida. Estos resultados constituyen información relevante para programas deportivos basados en el desarrollo positivo de la juventud, ya que el modelo explicativo propone que los determinantes personales, contextuales y relacionales podrían influir en la transferencia de habilidades de vida de manera positiva o negativa.
Conocerse es errar. La aproximación escéptica a los afectos en Juan Luis Vives
En este artículo propondremos una lectura escéptica del tratamiento que Juan Luis Vives otorga a los afectos en la tercera parte de su libro De Anima et Vita. Para ello, en primer lugar, situaremos la obra mencionada en el contexto del tiempo y la vida de su autor. Posteriormente, realizaremos un pequeño recuento de las influencias principales de Vives a la hora de describir los afectos. En tercer lugar, rescataremos sus influencias escépticas, concretamente destacaremos el peso del escepticismo académico en su concepción práctica de las pasiones. Finalmente, concluiremos que el tratamiento de los afectos en la obra del humanista está ligado tanto a su recuperación de la verosimilitud académica, como al impulso dado a la retórica en el Renacimiento, al uso persuasivo de palabras e impresiones, como vía de resolución de los asfixiantes problemas morales y políticos del momento.
Una condición extraordinariamente corporal
Es ya un tópico, aquél que establece una relación entre la obra de Montaigne y la de Descartes, bien como adversarios, bien como precedente el uno del otro o como alternativas por relación al concepto de sujeto, que no llegaron a formular plenamente con sus características actuales. Sin embargo, al hilo del estudio del papel del cuerpo en ambos pensadores trataremos de mostrar, primero, su cercanía contextual y, luego, sus filiaciones conceptuales. Ambos autores están mucho más cerca de lo que suele creerse y las deudas intelectuales de Descartes con Montaigne se resumen, además, en una noción de individuo realmente existente y una concepción de la “vida” como alternativa a la filosofía tradicional, que pueden ser de gran interés para el pensamiento actual.
La pasión esclava
La pasión esclava aborda la discursividad masoquista en La Regenta (1884-1885) de Leopoldo Alas, Clarín, como una estrategia subversiva de dominio y sumisión mediante la cual se rebaten los fundamentos del pensamiento liberal sobre la educación, la agencia y la libertad del sujeto moderno. Frente a las investigaciones que priman el enfoque psicoanalítico de tradición freudiana y vinculan el masoquismo a conductas perversas y pasivas, este estudio brinda una aproximación pluralista -donde destaca la perspectiva cultural, histórica-clínica y literaria- gracias a la cual es posible reubicar el masoquismo en el amplio terreno de las pasiones y subrayar la agencia y creatividad sobre las que se conforma el sentido discursivo del masoquismo transgresor en la narrativa finisecular. Nuria Godón muestra cómo la novela cumbre de Alas problematiza las propuestas de compañerismo en la sociedad moderna presentando una reformulación del contrato masoquista que parodia el contrato matrimonial, satiriza el contrato social rousseriano y cuestiona el engranaje del sistema educativo krausista. Asimismo, explora el impacto del catolicismo en la dinámica masoquista en otros textos de autores contemporáneos entre los cuales figuran Emilia Pardo Bazán y Armando Palacio Valdés, sin olvidar a Leopold von Sacher-Masoch-autor sobre el que se acuña el término de masoquismo-para explicar posteriormente cómo la influencia religiosa da forma al despliegue de la dialéctica del masoquismo femenino y filial en el contexto español trazado en La Regenta. En este sentido, La pasión esclava invita a una reconsideración del masoquismo como herramienta que hace saltar los mecanismos de sujeción genérica, susceptibles de ser observados no solo en el ámbito literario español que el libro presenta sino también dentro de otras producciones culturales. La pasión esclava addresses the masochist discursivity of La Regenta (1884-1885) by Leopoldo Alas, Clarín, as a subversive strategy of dominance and submission through which the foundations of liberal thinking on education, agency, and freedom of the modern subject are refuted. Differing from studies that prioritize the Freudian psychoanalytic focus and link masochism with perverse and passive behaviors, this book offers a pluralist approach, where cultural, clinical-historical, and literary perspectives are essential to relocate masochism to the area of passions, while emphasizing the agency and creativity upon which the discursive meaning of transgressive masochism in fin-de-siècle narrative is articulated. Nuria Godón shows how La Regenta challenges the models of partnership in modern society by displaying a reformulation of the masochist contract that parodies the marital contract, satirizes Rousseau's social contract, and places the wheels of Krause's educational machine under scrutiny. Likewise, she explores Catholicism's impact on the masochist dynamic in other contemporary texts by authors such as Emilia Pardo Bazán and Armando Palacio Valdés, without excluding Leopold von Sacher-Masoch-the Austrian writer from whom the term masochism was coined-to further disclose how religion's influence shapes the dialectic of female and filial masochism in the Spanish context represented in Alas's masterpiece. In this sense, La pasión esclava invites one to reconsider masochism as a tool that tears apart the mechanisms of gender subjection, which are observable not only in the Spanish literary texts analyzed in this book, but also in other cultural productions.
PASSION, EDUCATION, AND CREATIVITY AND THEIR EFFECTS ON ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION
ABSTRACT This research aimed to verify the effects of entrepreneurial passion, education, and creativity on entrepreneurial intention (EI). The study used PLS-SEM to analyze data collected via questionnaires from university students in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza. The results showed that entrepreneurial education directly affects EI, whereas the hypothesis that entrepreneurial creativity is a predictor of EI was not supported unless it was mediated by self-efficacy. Finally, the results showed that entrepreneurial passion influences EI directly and when mediated by self-efficacy. RESUMEN Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo verificar los efectos de la pasión, la educación y la creatividad emprendedoras sobre la intención emprendedora (IE). El estudio utilizó PLS-SEM para analizar datos recopilados mediante cuestionarios de estudiantes universitarios en la ciudad brasileña de Fortaleza. Los resultados mostraron que la educación empresarial afecta directamente a la IE, mientras que la hipótesis de que la creatividad empresarial es un predictor de la IE no fue respaldada a menos que estuviera mediada por la autoeficacia. Finalmente, los resultados mostraron que la pasión emprendedora influye en la IE directamente y cuando está mediada por la autoeficacia. RESUMO Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar os efeitos da paixão empreendedora, da educação e da criatividade na intenção empreendedora (IE). O estudo utilizou o PLS-SEM para analisar dados coletados por meio de questionários de estudantes universitários da cidade brasileira de Fortaleza. Os resultados mostraram que a educação empreendedora afeta diretamente a IE, enquanto a hipótese de que a criatividade empreendedora é um preditor da IE não foi apoiada a menos que fosse mediada pela auto-eficácia. Por fim, os resultados mostraram que a paixão empreendedora influencia a IE diretamente e quando mediada pela auto-eficácia.

The Mediation of Harmonious Passion for Work in the Servant Leadership and Work Intentions Relationship: A Longitudinal Study
Abstract This study evaluated the relationship between servant leadership and work intentions, mediated by passion for work, in a longitudinal study. Data were collected in three waves, with three-month intervals in between, totaling a six-month data collection period. The total sample consisted of 479 workers of both genders (70.4% women) from all Brazilian regions. The results of the cross-lagged panel analysis showed that the servant leadership positively predicted work intentions. In addition, passion for work partially mediated the relationship between servant leadership and work intentions. However, contrary to expectations, this mediation was negative. The results are discussed according to the Passion for Work Assessment Model, which provided theoretical support for the investigation.
Interview with Filipino Nurse Leaders: Caring for Colorado, the USA, and the Rest of the World
Around 2007, I started gathering small number of Colorado-based Filipino Nurses, who I personally know. [...]I was able to form the chapter of PNAA in Colorado. The meetings provided opportunities where both parties could exchange dialogues about safety, especially around the use of appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment), as we needed to conserve PPEs due to their limited supply. The high-priority opportunities they identified were education about the basics of ventilator management, medication administration through enteral feeding tube, and proning and repositioning the ICU patients. With the help of some of our ICU nurses, we were able to create relevant educational objectives, develop a curriculum, and provide classroom and simulated hands-on education.
