Ric Killian and Edwin Peacock Support $2 Trillion Tax Hike
2012
According to [Ric Killian]'s website, he believes that we should \"adopt fundamental Simpson-Bowles fiscal recommendations.\" According to [Edwin Peacock]'s website, the Simpson-Bowles fiscal recommendations are \"the roadmap to correct this problem.\" \"Overall, the fiscal commission would raise taxes by $3.3 trillion over the decade.\" Heritage also wrote that Bowles-Simpson would be \"the highest sustained tax burden in American history.\" [\"Fiscal Commission Report: Too Much Taxes, Not Enough Spending Cuts,\" by Brian Riedl, Dec. 3, 2010] \"By supporting the Simpson-Bowles recommendations, Ric Killian and Edwin Peacock demonstrate that they are out of touch with the taxpayers of North Carolina,\" said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. \"Voters should know that by voting for either Killian or Peacock, they are voting for a candidate who promises to raise their taxes when they get to Washington.\"

CHARLOTTE: IN QUEST OF AN IMAGE
1983
''Across the spectrum, Charlotte is moving into the category of one of the best cities in this part of the country,'' says Kelley Alexander Sr., a lifelong resident and an official of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. ''Race relations now are at a very good point.'' Dr. Jay M. Robinson, the superintendent of schools, said, ''Initially there was a tremendous resistance, but after the decision was made, the majority of leaders here said that's the law of the land and that's what we've got to do. Now I'm convinced, of all the larger communities in the country, we have the most integrated system.'' He and other authorities note that there has been very little flight from the public schools. All in all, about 90 percent of the students in Charlotte- Mecklenburg attend the public schools. Both Mr. [Harvey B. Gantt] and Mr. [Edwin B. Peacock Jr.] agree that the major issue is how to control growth so that a certain quality of life is maintained. ''That is not an issue that divides,'' said Ann D. Thomas, Mr. Peacock's campaign manager. ''That is an issue that unites.''

On dog days, humans sweat to keep horses cool ; At Pimlico, vets, others worry about heatstroke during current heat wave; Horse Racing
2005
At Pimlico, everyone from [Forrest Peacock] to outriders to trainers keeps close eyes on horses in weather like this. The track provided water hoses at frequent intervals along the front stretch, where outriders, pony riders and grooms can cool their animals. Yesterday, as temperatures climbed toward 100 degrees, trainer Edwin W. Merryman was hoping, without much real belief, that the weather would cool a little by 5:30 p.m., when his horse Sherbrook Rye was to run in the $50,000 Humphrey S. Finney Stakes for Maryland- breds, a 1 1/8 -mile race on turf. On Friday night, Merryman made sure his horses were well- hydrated and dosed with a syringe of electrolytes. Yesterday, the horses continued to be watched and cooled before their races. Outriders and pony riders were being just as vigilant.

Peacock proud to have Downing in footsteps
2005
\"[Stewart Downing] actually reminds me of [Edwin Holliday], \" said [Striker Alan Peacock], who works commercially at Boro matches and witnessed first- hand the rapid development of the 20-year-old. Peacock feels that Downing, likely to be given an opportunity to shine at some stage during tonight's friendly with Holland, will not be the last to make the step up from Steve McClaren's men. \"Middlesbrough might have got their hands on the Carling Cup last season but it was the Youth Cup that really got me, \" said Peacock, who like Downing, represented England from youth level upwards.

What standing up to Jindal gets you
2012
[John Alario] was at the Governor's Mansion on the day of the inauguration when he received a text message from [Barrow Peacock] asking if he could catch a ride to New Orleans for the LSU-Alabama game. \"I showed it to the governor,\" said Alario. \"I thought it was a joke.\" When Jindal blessed [Chuck Kleckley] just after the primary elections, [Joel Robideaux] railed that it reeked of old-style Louisiana politics at its worst. \"This shadowy, back room way of doing things has been part of the governor's power since the days of Huey Long, continuing through Governor [Edwin Edwards] to the present day,\" read Robideaux's press statement. So which is it, from Peacock to Robideaux, does defying the governor and his leaders win you retribution or respect? Their cases were different. Robideaux held out, but, unlike Peacock, eventually went along. Also, veteran Robideaux, elected Speaker Pro Tem last term, is well regarded as capable, astute and, as a senior member of Ways & Means, well qualified to take the gavel. Robideaux has some muscle, while Peacock, at this point in his Senate career, has only feathers.

FOR A YOUNG NOVELIST SUCCESS BUT NO RICHES
1986
''It was a good lesson even for me, a veteran publisher,'' Miss Evans said. ''So when [Allen Peacock] brought in the Pearson book, I said, 'Stay with him, he's an investment.' '' [Linden] signed Mr. Pearson to two more books, and he has already earned for the house what Miss Evans described as ''some nice money.'' $35,000 in Royalties Possible Even after unsold copies of ''Short History'' are returned by bookstores, Mr. Pearson could earn as much as $35,000 in royalties from just the sale of the hardcover edition alone. While there has been no sale to the movies, Ballantine Books paid $22,000 for paperback rights to ''Short History,'' of which Mr. Pearson will receive $11,000. (The hard-cover publisher traditionally splits the paperback money, and deducts from the author's share any outstanding balance from his advance.) And Linden paid him a $20,000 advance for his two other novels. ''Publishers have it figured out mathematically - they pay you just enough not to be able to live on,'' Mr. Pearson said with a grin. ''Actually,'' he added, ''I've already made more money as a writer than I ever dreamed I would.''
