Stimulants belonging to the amphetamine group nowadays pose an undeniable worldwide threat to the life and health of users. Intoxications of domestic animals also occur, which can either be accidental or related to intentional human action. This study presents the first ever reported case of a simultaneous amphetamine and methamphetamine intoxication of a cat, along with the results of toxicological studies. Blood, urine, vitreous humor and liver were collected during the cat’s autopsy and analyzed by UHPLC─QqQ─MS/MS. The sample preparation technique was based on one-step precipitation of proteins with cold acetonitrile. The determined amphetamine concentrations in the collected biological materials were 93.4 ng/mL in blood, 496.6 ng/mL in urine, 589.2 ng/mL in the vitreous humor and 291.2 ng/g in liver, respectively. Methamphetamine concentrations were 45.5 ng/mL in blood, 263.1 ng/mL in urine, 351.2 ng/mL in vitreous humor, and 97.7 ng/g in liver. Other substances were also found in the biological material, i.e., diazepam, oxazepam and nordiazepam. Cases of intentional or accidental poisoning of pets with psychoactive substances are a serious problem, carrying the risk to the health and life of the animal. Therefore, it is important to increase awareness of the high risk of poisoning of domestic animals, as well as to learn about the incompletely understood mechanisms of pharmacokinetics of various drugs in animals, including cats.

Garfield feeds the kitty
\"Garfield, the fat cat with the bottomless stomach, dishes up another tasty serving of cartoon comedy. So whether he's celebrating the official Kick-Odie-Across-the-Room Day, playing connect-the-freckles on Jon's chest, or perfecting his insincere smile, Garfield's always on the prowl for food and fun! The GARFIELD CLASSICS series collects the early years of the Garfield comic strip in a larger, full-color format. Garfield may have gone through a few changes, but one thing has stayed the same: his enormous appetite for food and fun. So laugh along with the classic cat, because classics are always in style\"-- Amazon.com.
Fun facts keep clients coming BACK
2014
The author may not be the greatest medical mind in the veterinary field, but he bets some of his clients think he is because he always pays attention to their perceptions. In an exam, he \"starts with the heart\" and then move to the head, engaging the owner's emotions before intellect. Fun facts are another powerful tool to help make clients think of you as a brainiac who can crack any case. This trivia has little to do with medicine and everything to do with strutting your intellectual stuff and building a rapport. While first-class CE is important for keeping pets healthy, a little \"tee hee\" helps keep relationships healthy.

Culture and Interculture in Saudi EFL Textbooks : A Corpus-Based Analysis
2018
This paper combines corpus processing tools to investigate the cultural elements of Saudi education of English as a foreign language (EFL) textbooks. The latest Saudi EFL textbooks (2016 onwards) are available in researchable PDF formats. This helps process them through corpus search software tools. The method adopted is based on analysing 20 cultural topics (nodes), namely climate, clothing, eating, education, family life, geography, history, holidays, humour, language, leisure, meeting people, currency, pets, population, religions, social occasions, sports, transportation and vacations. Function words, verbs, adjectives and punctuation were removed from the files of Saudi EFL textbooks. This guarantees searching for only cultural content words that are associated with the 20 selected cultural topics. The processing of the associations helps identify the type of culture quantitatively: local culture, target culture, and interculture. The results show that local Arabic cultural words are more frequent than target English cultural words, and the latter is more frequent than the intercultural words. This highlights a lack of intercultural examples in the whole corpus of Saudi EFL textbooks. This implies that a reconsideration of intercultural examples is needed for developing English language teaching materials. This is due largely to English being widely used as a lingua franca.

With Collies Graven on His Heart: The Canine Projections of Thomas Anstey Guthrie (1856–1934)
2018
Soon after adopting ‘F. Anstey’ as his nom de plume, Thomas Anstey Guthrie (1856–1934) scored a striking success with his début novel Vice Versâ (1882). On a necessarily smaller scale, he then repeated the feat months later with his short story ‘The Black Poodle’. By writing in the novel about a boys’ school (though with a touch of magical mystery) and by centring the story on a dog (though with a distinct sting in the tail), he demonstrated how well attuned he was to the taste of the times. The recourse had by the plots of both to doubles and stand-ins means that ‘The Black Poodle’ trots in the footprints of Vice Versâ. It is also a prospective epitome of Anstey’s mature work, pointing a direction for much in his subsequent career. In 1920 he came back round to it with a vengeance, embarking on a silent film scenario which reprises the original storyline. The 1920 script gives this an unexpected extension, however, as if to teach the old dog some new tricks. On many other occasions Anstey applied in a more general way what writing the story had taught him about the value of having his exploration of human nature and human emotions refracted through canine experience. The reasons for which Anstey so badly needed dogs both in his life and in his work can be inferred from his autobiography, and from the most personal of his unpublished writings. It was indeed as doubles and stand-ins that they came to serve him. As he grew more deeply attached to the dogs he owned, and increasingly inclined to identify both himself and his loved ones with them, so he transferred to them the griefs with which he could not otherwise deal. In the end he perhaps depended on that displacement for his ability to function, or his ability to continue coming across, as the comic writer whom the success of Vice Versâ had brought to birth.
