CAPTAIN TESTIFIES IN SMITH TRIAL
Englewood City Manager Eric Smith told investigators he knew the bills for legal work on his divorce were \"on the low end of what would normally be charged,\" but attributed it to \"professional courtesy,\" a sheriffs investigator testified Thursday. The firm also represented Smiths employer, the city of Englewood, in several legal matters. In addition, Richard Holzer, a partner in the firm, served as Englewoods part-time law director. Capt. Robert J. Spitler of the Montgomery County sheriffs office testified Thursday that Smith told him in July he \"assumed that there was some professional courtesy involved,\" and that the law firm was \"favoring him because of the relationship.\"

Passengers Laud Pilot of Crippled Jet
1988
''He did an excellent job of flying,'' said Dale Bringelson, owner of Island Aeromotive, who watched the landing from his company hangar at Kahului Airport. ''Because the upper structure was gone, there was a possibility of the plane buckling. If he hadn't been real careful, it could have busted in two. The man was highly skilled and it speaks well of the profession.'' When F. Emmett Miller, a fellow Aloha pilot who has flown 737s for 20 years, was asked what it would be like to fly a 737 with a big hole in it, he said: ''It doesn't have to be a 737,'' Mr. Miller said. ''It could be any airplane anywhere. I just saw the picture on CNN, a real clear picture, and I can't believe the airplane was still flying or that people sitting in that area survived. I think it's a statement probably any pilot would make looking at it. I just think that Bob Schornstheimer did a wonderful job.'' ''He says it was just something else,'' the elder Mr. Schornstheimer said in an interview from his home in Marietta, Ohio. ''All of a sudden there was this noise, and the plane's flying funny and there's a big drag on it, so he immediately decided to change the flight plan to land at the Maui airport, which was closest, and he was able to get it in and land it. He's pretty calm under pressure. He said he was calm and did what needed to be done, just like any other pilot would have.''

FIRE BURNS SHOPPING AREA IN DOWNTOWN PHILADELPHIA
1984
Capt. Robert Drennen of the Fire Department said workers on the third floor of the Harrison Court building had been using a torch. He said: ''It is believed that sparks from the torch fell down an interior shaft and ignited debris in the basement, starting the fire.'' Gallery officials said the blaze caused no structural damage to the building, but the 211 shops in the two-part Gallery complex and the department stores on either side, Gimbel's and Strawbridge & Clothier, were evacuated. The mall opened in two phases, Gallery I's 125 stores in 1977 and Gallery II's 86 stores last October. Gallery II links a new J.C. Penney department store at Market and 11th Streets with the Gimbel's store at Market and 10th. Gallery I links Gimbel's with Strawbridge & Clothier at Market and Ninth. All the Gallery stores are a block deep, from Market to Filbert. City Hall is at Market and Broad Streets, four blocks west of the Harrison Court Building.
