ALAN Biggar, the Bell Lawrie director who is half way round his charity driving tour of all 39 of the firm's UK offices, has made quite an impact with his garishly decorated vintage Morgan - but perhaps quite not as intended. It was time for the Suffolk run via Norwich. \"We arrived late,\" says an exasperated Biggar, who has raised more than GBP 100,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. \"Driving around the streets we suddenly felt an almighty shove from the back. We looked round to find a sheepish looking local explaining he had been so distracted by the 50-year-old car he managed to run into it! Fortunately, one of the local Bell Lawrie directors lent us his garage and mechanic. Unfortunately, trying to make up time, I pushed the car a little too hard on the next leg and it blew up.\"

\"Many of them just get a kick out of being out here,\" said Dan Warner, the rink owner and organizer of the competition, which was open to all skill levels. \"They put on their costume and lay it out on the line.\" \"Some of them try it for a little while,\" [Darlene Winton] said. \"And some of them we hook for life.\"

Local call for aviation job
Andy Rowe, who is chief executive of Marlborough's Cuddon Engineering told fellow NMIT board members this week that if the contract for the project went out of the region he could guarantee there would be \"community backlash\". Board member Leo McKendry said Mr Rowe's idea of keeping the project for regional companies was \"wonderful in sentiment but not very practical when it came to the reality. If a company comes and beats on price then they are going to get the job\". Mr [Tony Gray] said NMIT was a public institution \"and anything we do is up for public scrutiny, it always has been\". He said NMIT was currently working through the expressions of interest.

Port Alberni Folkfest Society meets on Mar. 8 at Abbeyfield 12:30 p.m. The letter to the editor was written and here is the result, four new people have responded: Gillian Shearwater, Carolynne Parsons, Jessica Hewko, and Tamara Fritzche. We also were fortunate in getting another person to take over [Sally Anderson]'s work as Secretary- Treasurer. Welcome Deb Oakes. [Andy Rowe] conducted our discussion about homelessness, and he wanted to continue with another action meeting. He held a closed meeting and he will be making a report to you all about the future of this group, I am so happy that Food and Filosophy is not just limited to talk. Andy has taken action. What a good example for us all in this group. Thanks!
Solution for the homelessness problem to be discussed over dinner
A reminder of our first meeting for the new year at the Pine Cafe on Jan. 8 beginning at 6 p.m. The moderator for this discussion is a newcomer to Port Alberni, Andy Rowe. He told me that he has very strong feeling about this topic -- the politicization of homelessness. He has joined both the Folksong Circle and The Barclay Sounds Choir. He admires this City with a Heart, then he sees that there was a sell out crowd for Stephen Lewis, and he wonders why we do not take time to think of the problems that is very close to us . . . homelessness!

FISHERS, the fish restaurant chain popular with Edinburgh's financial community, is to spread its wings with the acquisition of one of Britain's first gastro pubs - The Shore in Leith. Barfly hears that the head chefs will be Jenny Daly, who has worked at both Fishers Bistro and Fishers In The City, and Martin Laurentowicz - who has worked his way through the ranks at Fishers and has recently completed a season as chef on the Royal Scotsman. Among the early ideas are a late-night dish which Tia Millar, co-owner alongside husband Jake (both pictured above) and Graeme Lumsden, says should prove popular with restaurant workers wanting to wind down after the evening shift. AN EMAIL from SNCF, the company behind France's high-speed TGV trains, caused cries of despair in Scotland last week. The company is preparing to unveil a \"multi-media portal\" on its TGV trains on March 26 which will allow travellers to access the internet while moving at speeds of up to 200mph.
