On sail at the Frugal Frigate, October 19
The ever-talented and word-gifted Cynthia Rylant has solved the snow-describing issue that has been prevalent in my home for years with her newly released book titled simply \"[Snow].\" \"The best snow is the snow that comes softly in the night, like a shy friend afraid to knock, so she thinks she'll just wait in the yard until you see her. This is the snow that brings you peace.\" So, let's recap. You could try to explain to someone who hasn't seen snow in all its wonder your take on the subject, or you could get the new book \"Snow\" and read it to that special person you are trying to share knowledge with.
Life in Poetry
\"Wax Lips\" by [Cynthia Rylant] from \"Waiting to Waltz.\" Copyright 2001 by Cynthia Rylant. Reprinted with permission of the author, whose most recent book of poetry is \"Ludie's Life,\" Harcourt, 2006.
What was old is now new again
At the very top of her game, author Cynthia Rylant has joined forces with illustrator Nikki McClure to create a new children's book that fits perfectly in with the ageless classics like \"Little Toot\" and \"Ferdinand the Bull.\" It is titled \"All in a Day.\"
Rylant's 'Master Plan' brings new challenge to old faces
Cynthia Rylant's latest chapter book brings back the characters of Gooseberry Park (1995) to face the challenge of drought in the northwest. After months of no rain, Kona, the faithful lab and his hermit crab housemate, [Wise Gwendolyn], again team up with Murray (the bat with a sweet tooth and kleptomaniac tendencies), and the ever resourceful mother squirrel, Stumpy, to save their neighbors in \"Gooseberry Park: The Master Plan, illustrated by Arthur Howard. Cynthia Rylant has over 150 books for emergent readers (the \"Everyday series; \"Brownie and Pearl, featuring a girl and her cat; and \"Puppy Mudge), first readers (30 volumes about Henry and his mastiff dog Mudge; his cousin Annie and her cat Snowball; the \"Poppleton series; and Mr. Putter and his cat Tabby), peerless picture books (\"When I Was Young in the Mountains and \"The Relatives Came), and chapter novels (Newberry Medal-winner \"Missing May, the best book I know about growing up rural and poor for children or adults).
On the shelves
[Cynthia Rylant]'s book is an intelligent, deeply affecting book about hero- worship for teenagers that won a Newbery Honor, a sort of runner-up prize for best outstanding American book for children.
A gentle, seasonal story just right for new readers
In several trips to the [Putter] house, Zeke the bulldog makes like a St. Bernard and delivers hot soup, tea with honey sticks and - in a final act of generosity - one of his own adventure books. In the end, all three of them snuggle down in bed - Mr. Putter, Tabby and Zeke - to read the book and, eventually, fall asleep.
Rylant grants rare interview
[Cynthia Rylant], who grew up in Raleigh County, almost never allows interviews. But she made an exception for \"In Their Own Country,\" a 14-week program that features West Virginia authors and their words and which is running every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. through mid- December. Schoolchildren know Rylant as the author of warm, funny picture books and several novels, including \"Missing May.\" But she has written more than 100 books for both children and adults. Listeners to Tuesday's show will hear Rylant read four of her most popular books: \"When I was Young in the Mountains,\" \"The Relatives Came,\" \"Night in the Country\" and \"Scarecrow.\"
