L’evoluzione del settore vitivinicolo a Sambuca di Sicilia dalla fine degli anni sessanta a oggi
Within the framework of an endogenous vision of territorial development, this article aims to reconstruct the modern history of wine production in Sambuca di Sicilia, a small rural municipality of the Free Consortium of Agrigento. Through this historical reconstruction, it also seeks to shed light on the evolving role of the local wine ecosystem as a function of authentic, long-term, and self-sustaining local development.
La lunga deistituzionalizzazione. La riforma psichiatrica italiana e la sua applicazione
This article presents an analytical study of the treatment of psychiatric diseases and disorders in the wake of Law 180 of 1978. While historical analysis has largely focused on the history of asylums, marking 1978 as a pivotal turning point, the subsequent period has largely been overlooked. Few studies have examined the impact of the reform or the consequences of the anti-institutional movement. In Italy, new welfare models were experimented with, significantly innovating and enriching clinical knowledge and practice. This article focuses on the implementation of the «Reform of Psychiatric Care», examining its medium- and long-term effects.
La presenza della lingua italiana nel sistema politico, educativo e culturale albanese (1855-1943)
Italian was introduced as a language of instruction in religious schools during the final stages of the Ottoman empire and gradually became more prevalent in the Albanian education system. After Albania gained independence in 1912, the ruling class was divided between those who supported the spread of the Italian language and those like Albanian leader Ahmed Zog, who sought to limit it due to fears that the «fascistisation» of the ruling class could lead to Italian occupation. Following the union of the crowns of Italy and Albania, the fascist government imposed the forced Italianization of Albanian society, which led to the demonization of the Italian language by the newly formed socialist government.
Dal tempo «sospeso» al tempo «produttivo» dell’accoglienza
The article explores the inequities in accessing higher education faced by asylum seekers and beneficiaries of international protection. The first section focuses on the right to education and the role of lifelong learning within Italy’s reception system. The second section examines how the learning process can foster the development of migrants’ human potential, framing the reception period as an opportunity to mend biographical fractures through a lens of social justice. The epistemological foundation of the right to education is illustrated through the project Being an Inclusive University for Refugee Students at the University of Florence, which pilots both pre-academic and ongoing tutoring programs for forced migrants.
Mafie e gioco d’azzardo. Il ruolo delle regioni e il caso del Piemonte
The article discusses the complex relations between mafias and gambling markets in Italy, focusing on the debate as well as the economic and social aspects that constitute the environment in which all actors move. In this context, the recent regional laws assume relevance, because they contribute to altering said environment. More specifically, the case of Piedmont is emblematic when it comes to observing the debate and the different actors and interests in the field. The reconstruction (through judicial sources) of the judiciary inquiry known as «Carminius » very much shows the role of regional regulations and presents a case of hybridisation between legal and illegal in the gambling market.
L’attenzione mediorientale dell’Italia nelle carte di Emilio Colombo (1980-86)
Emilio Colombo was at the center of Italy’s renewed attention to the Middle East in the 1980s. Starting with the Venice European Council of 12 and 13 June 1980, which represented an unprecedented turn in European foreign policy towards the Middle East and in which Palazzo Chigi played an important and leading role, Rome became increasingly interested in the Mediterranean chessboard. The present study aims to further explore Italy’s focus on the Middle East in the early 1980s, primarily through the archival records of Emilio Colombo, which have recently been made accessible by the Historical Archive of the Luigi Sturzo Institute.
Una «terza via» della camorra. Genesi dei clan tra dimensione urbana e tradizione rurale
The paper examines the emergence of the Camorra in Pagani (Salerno) during the 1970s, proposing a third trajectory of clan formation that transcends the urban-rural dichotomy. In this agricultural context, clans did not emerge from traditional rural criminal groups but through new formations shaped by urbanization and modernization. This hybrid genesis, blending urban and rural influences, reveals the socio-economic and political dynamics underpinning organized crime. The findings enhance understanding of the Camorra as a plural and context-dependent phenomenon.
The Italian Waste Scandal
This paper examines the phenomenon of international trafficking in Italian waste, which occurred in the late 1980s, and analyses the ways in which this context has changed over time. Furthermore, it analyses the impact of these changes on Italian diplomatic relations and national environmental legislation. By consulting both published and unpublished sources, this paper aims to elucidate the tensions that occurred in the late 1980s between the Italian government and the governments of Nigeria and Lebanon. These tensions originated from the discovery of Italian waste in Koko and Beirut, subsequently giving rise to a regulatory response at the end of the decade.
Mutualità e consenso politico
Between 1892 and 1894, co-operatives and mutual societies played a key role in the social mobilisation of the Sicilian Fasci. Despite this, historiography has not adequately investigated the unique bond between mutuality and the end-of-the-century revolt. The latter enabled the spread of new co-operative practices to meet bottom-up demands within a new political language based on social rights. Even though the Fasci were disbanded by the violent repression of 1894, opposing political and social actors saw co-operatives as tools for gaining popular support. This competition encouraged entrepreneurial experimentation, filling Sicily’s gap in the development of the co-operative business.
Presenze straniere nell’opera dell’Unla
The history of the National Union for the Fight against Illiteracy (Unla) is still largely unexplored. The essay reconstructs the collaboration between this organization and the American Friends Service Committee (Afsc), an American Quaker, pacifist association that has always been involved in social work in many crisis areas of the world. The Afsc will work alongside Unla for fifteen years, guaranteeing it economic support for the implementation of its numerous projects. The study anticipates the results of a wider research dedicated to the dense web of international relations that characterizes the work of Unla and its main actors.
