Overview
Italian was introduced as a language of instruction in religious schools during the final stages of the Ottoman empire and gradually became more prevalent in the Albanian education system. After Albania gained independence in 1912, the ruling class was divided between those who supported the spread of the Italian language and those like Albanian leader Ahmed Zog, who sought to limit it due to fears that the «fascistisation» of the ruling class could lead to Italian occupation. Following the union of the crowns of Italy and Albania, the fascist government imposed the forced Italianization of Albanian society, which led to the demonization of the Italian language by the newly formed socialist government.
